Windows Media Player / MPEG Video Compression Corrupt

I seem to be having some kind of compression issue with MPEG videos.

Anytime I click on a video file that is .mpg, Windows Media Player will load the video. Upon first clicking the link, it loads but is corrupt with compression artifacts in the picture (and no sound). Then, If I wait a few seconds (seemingly long enough for the video to load) and click the link again, the video reloads and plays perfectly fine, sound and all.

Here is a screen cap of what I experience upon first loading a video:

And this is the "Properties" information of a typical video file that does
    this:

    704x384
    1.67:1
    AC3Filter
    MPEG Video Decoder

From a functionality stand point this isn't much of an issue as I have rarely ran into a video that wouldn't play after the second click, once the video has a chance to load for a moment. Also, this does not happen with RealPlayer or QuickTime videos. Already tried reinstalling Windows Media Player but to no avail.

But still, I really would like to know what causes this so I can attempt to eliminate it.

    Thanks!

I have found that installing a third party Codec Pack will usually sort out some of the strangest issues with WMP. K-Lite Codec Pack Full

Even though .MPEGs are perhaps the most common type of video file, you may need to install a codec as the current codec may be becoming 'disconnected' or broken/corrupt. Many different codec packs are available in the Major Geeks Multimedia Section. My personal favorite is the KLite Mega Pack. Install the codec pack and try it again.... hopefully that will take care of it!

But this puzzles me. Do we really think it's a codec issue?

Remember, this only happens when I first click the file. If I let it sit like that for say, about 3 or 4 seconds and then click the link again, it loads and plays fine (without the compression issue). I'm just trying to verify that this is normal for videos that have not fully loaded yet, or an actual corruption somewhere.

I've seen a codec pack fix some odd problems with WMP so I'm fairly certain that it's a codec issue. What sort of issue, not sure. You can try the K-Lite Codec Tweak Tool which will scan for broken codecs and repair or remove them.

The only difference in the streaming issue is that I did update my video driver during the last format of my system. Maybe thats what causes the new compression issue?

It would take about a minute to install the codec pack and see if it clears up. Another minute to uninstall it if that doesn't work.

It's been a month. If you won't even try the likely solutions nobody is going to want to put time into more complicated fixes.

I tried it. Did not work. Now, during the uninstall some of my other codecs got a little scrambled and had to take the time to reinstall them. That's why I didn't bother with your suggestion originally because logically it didn't make sense knowing what I know about the behavior of my system. Kind of a pain in the but to get all this straighted back out now, but at least I can say I tried your idea.

    So, any other thoughts?

Have you tried updating your drivers in Control Panel?

Have you had problems with or replaced your video card recently?

Is it just this one site that this happens?

i was thinking the same thing, about the codecs, but you might want to roll back your video card drivers (not roll back really, but uninstall) and re-install an older version

With my last video card I would click a video and while it would stream the first few seconds of the clip, the player would just be black. Then, after a few seconds I'd click it again and the video would load fine.

Then I changed my video card and updated the driver.

Now I click the video and I get the above pix-elated image for a moment, click on it again a few seconds later and it loads the video fine. So the point I was making earlier is it seems to be directly related to switching video card drivers.

Remember, none of this is actually hindering me from playing the videos. I just found it to be a strange change that I'm trying to figure out.

I've used VLC player in the past. However, in this case I prefer Windows Media Player. Thanks for the suggestion though ;)
