I am trying to go through the Read Me first steps and Spybot S&D won't run. When i click to open the program it pops up then is immediately followed by multiple error messages and then closes. I also tried to uninstall through both the start menu and add/remove programs and similar error messages popped up.

    Any suggestions?

Anything i can attach that would help?

    Windows XP wont load

Usually i can fix these problems myself but seem to be pretty deep into this one. I was in the process of running the "Read and Run me" tutorial (which is great by the way) and got to the part where I was to Run Spybot S&D. Spybot would error out and wouldn't run, it would just open various error messages and then close. So i tried to uninstall Spybot through the add/remove programs as well as from the start menu. When i tried to uninstall from the add/remove programs it got about 3/4 of the way done and froze. I did a cold shutdown and when i restarted the computer nothing loaded.

When i turn the computer on it seems as though everything loads correctly and my desktop image shows but there are no programs, no start menu, no taskbar etc. The mouse is there, and i can move it around but there is nothing to click. Wh en i use CTRL,ALT,DEL it says that task manager has been disabled by the administrator. So i just have to cold shutdown again.

When I try to use last known good config same thing happens

When i load in safe mode i get 2 messages:

The instruction "0x00e49led" referenced memory at "0x00000000" The memory could not be read

Click Ok to Terminate, Cancel to Debug

Whether i clock 'OK' or 'Cancel' i get the same message:

This system is shutting down please save all work...The shutdown was initiaed by NT AUTHORITY/System

Windows must now restart because the DCOM server process launcher service terminated unexpectedly.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately I can't get anything on or off the computer.

Just skip that step and continue on with the Read and Run First instructions.

Msg # 2 here was merged from a second thread. Thus TimW's reply looks out of sync since it was in response to the 1st message.

You may want to try scanning this problem PC's hard disk in another computer by attaching it as a slave drive. Your problems may not be malware. What problems were you having that made you start running the READ & RUN ME?

However shutting it down while the registry was being access to uninstall, may have cause registry corruption. And you may need to use a procedure like below to recover:

Thanks for the response. It was most definitely malware at the start. I was getting "your computer is infected" etc. etc. pop ups. "Buy xyz virus software to fix" Computer would freeze every now again. Both in Firefox and IE. I was acutally planning on hooking the hard drive into another computer tonight and pulling off my pictures etc. then wiping it clean. But if i didn't have to do that it would be great. If I follow the steps in the corrupt registry guide do i risk losing stuff on my hard drive? What id i can't find my XP disk?

EIDT: also as you probably had read Spybot wouldn't run. It also disabled both Windows updates and Windows firewall

Fixing your registry will not make you lose anything. You can try borrowing an xp cd from a friend as long as it is the exact same version ( Home, Pro, etc).

Thanks for all the help guys. Didn't even need the XP Cd. Just ran the recovery console which must be partitioned somewhere in the hard drive. All is working perfectly. Took me a little while to find all my files because they got moved. Lets just say the wife wasn't very happy with me for a while, but eventually found them. Thanks for all the help.
