    Morning or Afternoon or Evening (as the case may be) to the fine folk of Major Geeks.

    If I could pick some brains please I am needing a bit of help. I have an HP 3300 that is about hmm- four years old. Recently was reformatted. Everything was wonderful, grafix, speed - it rocked.

    About a week and a half ago my CPU started running at 100 % even when not actively doing anything. I usually run SecondLife and Firefox concurrently and had not had any issues until one day this happened. And I don't know what to do to get it back. There are 39 processes running that include in order of greatest mem usage:
    FireFox=60,520;
    explorer.exe= 40,444;
    java.exe=336,100,
    SfCtlCom.exe = 27,744;
    svchost.exe=27,080;
    UfSeAgnt.exe=27,080;
    SearchIndexer.exe=12,588;
    WindowsSearch.exe=11,384;
    TMBSRV.exe=11,216;
    TmProxy=11,056

    I ran Malaware Malabytes and it found no virus; Trend Micor finds no virus; Went into MsConfig Startup and checked off a few things from start up; tried turning off TrendMicro temporarily...nothing changes, comp still at 100%.

    Help! Thank you :)

    Hi

    Would be good to know which process is taking up CPU time, the memory usage is fine but not helpful in this instance, so use either Task Manager or Process Explorer to see what processes are taking up CPU %, please post also what Windows version and Service Pack you have.

    Also test in Safe Mode if you get the same issue.

    I am going to assume that the Java process info. is just a typo?

    msconfig is ok but give AUTORUNS a try as it shows you the currently configured auto-start applications as well as the full list of Registry and file system locations available for auto-start configuration

    Good stuff, I know that SP3 has in some PC setups caused issues and SP2 is stable as hell so fine, but do let us know when you can what processes are causing the main % increase, if you see idle at 90%+ then forget that one as its normal.

    Also check Event Viewer for any issues or warnings that continually crop up, especially in Application or System logs.

    I don't understand some of it but just looking through I see two things running that have to be fighting with each other: TrendMicro and Norton.

    Not real sure what the heck Norton thinks its doing in there- I mean i run Trend Micro... but i will try zapping that come morning. It's way too late for me right now. Thanks for noting that - I had not seen it.

    Hi

    Yes I agree with Plodr and the likelyhood is that if you still have Norton components on your PC and they are active, that is causing the scanners to be fighting eachother for CPU time thus bogging it down, check in Add-remove that no Norton applications are listed if they are remove them and also run the Norton Removal Tool

    Well- that went badly... got on support with TM and told them about the update being hung up I know this because I tried to uninstall TM to reinstall and it told me to close the update window- which wasn't open- trying to make a long story short- the told me to DL Microsoft Windows Component uninstaller and get rid of left over TM stuff- did that, but it did not really clean out TM and no comp freezes u the minute it comes up- i am afraid it may have gotten beyond m extremely limited capabilities- it really annoys me t think i am going to spend a $100 bux to have someone who knows what to do do it- not because it isn't worth it- but because i cannot afford this at this point! argh!! - Tomorrow I will keep hammering at it and call TM again - see if they have a better idea.

    If you think you have removed TrendMicro and some of it is still there and causing problems, there are two programs here that will do further cleanup: Revo Uninstaller and CCleaner.
    Do not pay someone to fix this. It may take time but you can do it and will learn more about your computer; the more you know, the less you need to spend and use techs which might very well be unreliable.
    Revo http://majorgeeks.com/Revo_Uninstaller_d5706.html
    CCleaner http://majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

    I haven't used Revo Uninstaller but others have so if you start it and don't know what to do, ask. Someone will help.
    I use CCleaner all the time so when you are ready for that, I will help with a step by step.

    Plodr- I DL'd Ccleaner and ran it- it found several TM leftovers and zapped them- however- TM is still a Ghost in the Machine :( - I then opened TM's ReadMe- - hoping for miracles I guess, and gee - who would have thought- this is a "Known Issue"! Yay- no obvious fix- but how comforting to know they "know" :(

    So from reading so far, you run Trend Micro AV, did the Norton removal work?

    Norton must still be in there somewhere since when i turn off TM I get some sort of Norton says your Virus Protection is off! But it is not the choice for protection. I sort of got sidetracked about Norton though, since it seems TM is the real culprit and is still running i the back ground. What I need is a TM Terminator!

    To remove trend there is this guide on their website:Here
    Or there is this thread from 2007 on here Trend Micro Removal

    I would add, Please download your new choice of Anti-virus software first, and download the removal the removal tools or print the web pages
    then physically disconnect from the Internet,
    Run the removal tools
    Run CCleaner to remove anything left and delete the associated folders in the c:\program files\ directory i.e c:\program files\Trend Micro
    restart the PC
    Install the new Anti-virus
    Reconnect to the internet and update and happy sailing

    People also says Revo Uninstaller gets rid of traces of old uninstalled software hiding in all those nooks and crannies. So consider trying that too on both Trend and Norton.

    Just so u guys don't think I forgot or solved this- I will be trying the latest suggestions over the weekend. Thank you all.

    So hello and some info on the resolution of this in case anyone was wondering. I got in touch with TM and they suggested some tings to do that did not work. I got rather fed uo and just walked away for a while. Last night I decided it was either it or me- so. Called TM again- this person had it together and was able to give me the name of one tool - tissuprt - that I ran and disabled TM long enough to properly uninstall it. I then found remnants of Norton lurking about the system, installed that too, reinstalled TM with all the latest updates and CPU is finally working as it should. We are again lickity split surfing from page to page and games are running like a dream.

    Thought would update- thanks everyone for the input. Be well.
