My hard drive would not boot up, it kept making a humming noise. I removed it and sent it to a data recovery company recommended by one of my computer savvy friends who works for a lardge corporation. Anyway, the data recovery firm has been unable to recover any of the information or data and informed me that there was platter damage to the drive and their equipment was not capable of recovering the information.
Is there a way to salvage the information from this hard dive? If anyone has some information that could prove helpful I would greatly appreciate it.

From what I understand, when you Hd is totally screwed and no one can help, the data recovery people are a last resort option. I may be speaking out of turn but I don't think there is any commercial software program that can help you with this one. You might try getting a second opinion from another data recovery service or call the manufacture of you HD and see if they can assist you, they may a company that rip the drive apart and work on it that way ,who knows? I'm just throwing out suggestions.

    good luck to you

If a data recovery company cannot recover the information, then I don't think it is recoverable. Most of the time if the platter is damaged then the information on the damaged area is lost.

With platter damage it's totally lost. New heads are a waste of time since the surface of the disk is gone.

+1 Also the freezer method has worked for some- you don't really have anything to loose at this point.

    Hi All,

As I see it the freezer method works by makeing all the mechanical parts contract and when allowed to come back to room temp to expand. Any sticky bearings or heads may loosen up enough to get it going for long enough to get your stuff off. Don't shut it down until you succede or have to give up. Freezeing will not repair anything. permanently. Mostly for drives that wont spin up.

    Good Luck, Jim
