As well as saying what you have, it would be helpful to say when you lost sound - did you do something that caused it? Did you just install something? New hardware?

Have a look at your Device Manager under System (depending on OS). Any yellow '?' or red X down LHS?

Also check you sound settings - right click on speaker in system tray (bottom rh corner of screen - if it's there) and open volume control. Make sure the Volume Control is both up and not muted.

Are speakers/headphones plugged in properly and in the correct port? Try the one at the back if the front one isn't working. Do they work on another computer?

Try uninstalling related drivers and reboot (to reinstall).

    That's a start.

If that doesn't work, you could try the suggestions in your other thread.

I downloaded that file and installed it.. It was Realtek
Ok, and I don't think it changed anything.
I installed it and restarted my computer to complete the installation, and I don't see any difference.
    Still no sound :(

I lost my sound after I replaced my old/fried power supply with my new(used) power supply.

    What is LHS?
Under "Other devices" in my device manager, it shows "Multimedia Audio Controller" and it has a yellow '!' beside it

Don't even have the speaker icon in my system tray anymore :S
Don't know what happened to it :S

Everything's plugged in correctly.. Unless I forgot to plug together one of the power supply chords to the sound card (if I even have to do that :S)

I just installed that Realtek audio thing, and I still don't have sound..
I don't even know what sound driver I need..

Fried power supply? Might have fried something else as well?
LHS = Left Hand Side (sorry)

    Shouldn't need to do that.

OK, that narrows it down a bit. A few things to try (let's assume you've got the right driver for your card - BTW, do you have a CD for the card?)

    1. Go to BIOS and under Integrated Peripherals (or similar), find the onboard audio controller and disable it (it might be conflicting with your audio card).
    2. Uninstall the driver with the yellow ! next to it and reboot.
    3. check that the sound card is properly seated (you might also try it in another slot - although Everest seems to have found it all right). Careful about static when poking around in there.
    4. remove the sound card. See if the onboard audio will work (also, check the device manager after booting - see if anything has changed).
    5. Have a look at Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices. There's a lot to look at there (especially default devices) - maybe you can figure something out, or post back info.

WB if none of this works, or even if it does!

I do not have any CD :S
I bought this computer from a friend
It's a custom built computer, by the way

    WHERE'S BIOS? :S

    BIOS:
Firstly, you need to be careful in the BIOS. You can wreck things if you do the wrong thing.
You get to it by rebooting your computer, and as it's booting up, tap on the Delete key. The BIOS will open.
The directions at the bottom of the page tell you how to navigate around, etc.
To change a value (when you get to it) use the + and - keys.
When you're exiting, it will ask you if you want to keep the changes. Type "Y" if it's not already flashing and "Enter" (I think - it will tell you).
    It will then boot.

    1. WHERE'S BIOS? :S

    3. Which one is the sound card...? :S:S
    4. Remove the sound card and turn on my computer w/o my sound card? That's what you're asking?
    5. Under the "Volume" tab, it says "No audio device" and I can't click anything in that tab. Under "Audio" and "Voice" tabs also, I can't click anything. Under "Sounds" tab, I can't click the play button.

    1. I went to BIOS and there was no "Integrated Peripherals" and no "Onboard Audio Controller." But, I did find "Onboard AC'97 Audio" under "Advance" and I disabled it. Still no sound.

    2. Yeah, I did uninstall it, and I rebooted. Still no sound.

    3. Haven't done this yet (What does the sound card look like.. lol)

    4. Haven't done this yet (What does the sound card look like.. lol)

    5. As I said in my previous post.

Are you saying you couldn't get to the BIOS? When you reboot, continually tap on the Delete key - about twice a second will do (tap, tap, tap). It will open after a bit.
When you get there, down arrow to Integrated Peripherals (I just had a look at mine)
    Enter
Down arrow to (on mine - XP Pro) SB200 Onchip PCI Device
    Enter
Down arrow to option on Onboard AC97 Audio (on mine)
Options on mine are Auto and Disable
Click on + key to change to Disable
    Escape key out of there.
When it asks if you want to save changes, say Y and Enter.

It will be the one that has audio plugs at the back of the case - brown, blue and pink, I think - where your speakers are plugged in.

Yes, that's what I'm asking. BTW, if we get to that, it would pay to uninstall the driver that you installed for the soundcard earlier on (in Device Manager). The Realtek one. It can be reinstalled later if necessary.

OK. Not surprising. Try the other stuff.

I DID get to the BIOS, I just couldn't find the "Integrated Peripherals". I did find the "Onboard AC'97 Audio" though, and I DID disable it. I still have no sound :p

How would I uninstall the Realtek driver? I can't see it in my Device Manager :S

  16. GCWesq

    GCWesq MajorGeek

Interesting that it's not there. You can't uninstall it if it isn't there. Forget that bit.

If you get to removing the soundcard and trying the onboard audio, you will need to re-activate the controller in the BIOS that you just disabled.

Are you still getting the yellow ! ?

    Here's something else to check:

Go to > Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual (under Startup Type), right click on Audio Service > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot

My audio service is already on Automatic.

    No more yellow '!'
Do I still have to re-active my thing in the BIOS?

It's a little difficult to tell where you're up to (one thing is, someone seems to have combined your two threads, which is a good idea), and what you've done so far.
It looks like everything is ready to test the onboard audio, though, except that I think you might still have the sound card in. Take that out (see below to tell which one it is, and be careful of static), then reactivate your "Onboard AC'97 Audio" under "Advance".
If sound still doesn't work, check your Device Manager and look for nasties again. Also see what audio controllers are there.

    G'day, illstyle.
Just thought I'd check in and see how you're doing with that sound problem.
