Alright so a few people have mention to me Avria, NOD32 Trend Micro, AVG, Kaspersky, are any of these programs good? Can I get them at staples etc.

thanks, But the thing is I want to be able to delete the virus and not just see whats on the computer. because I know with most free virus scanners you can only view whats on it and can't delete it without buying the license for the program.

I use Avira, it lets you scan and remove the things it finds. Seems to be light on resources.

Asking the best anti-virus software is like asking Ford or Chevy, Ferrari or Lambo. Everyone has their own likes or dislikes for whatever reason. I say try a few of the big names (one at a time, uninstalling as you go, as you should only have one installed at a time) and see what you like best.

    Hi

The software Fred linked too in some of the free ones will not out find and quarantine the malware but also delete it, both Avast (I use this) and AVG will do what you want, but as to the best AV and without coming off wrongly, the best AV is you, why, well it's the user who needs to keep all the software and OS upto date as well as safe surf, majority of malware infecting machines is from unsafe sites and from warez from torrents etc

If you follow the How to protect yourself from Malware guide in our malware forum then you have the basis of good security, I follow the dpcterine of the guide and have never been infected with malware, hood basic security, update apps and OS and safe surf is the key.

But if you want a retail solution then Nod32 or Kaspersky are the two options I would recomend

I've used the free Avast now for years at home, and can recommend it without hesitation. An excellent AV solution.

AVG has many adherents also - but I don't have much practical experience with it.

Halo is right - the best AV will not protect the reckless internet surfer . . . a little time spent in exploring the do's and don'ts of internet usage goes a long, long way in protecting the wanderer in their virtual travels . . .

it will delete and\or quarantine what it finds, most all of the free ones here do

Avast! WILL delete viruses --- not just quarantine.

My computer has been virus/nasty free for as long as I can remember and I use only freeware to do so.

    Some of my technique:
Windows firewall is more than enough with a router between your computer and the modem. I use Spyware Terminator with the Real-Time Shield enabled, SpyBot mainly for the immunization feature (It's great for your host file protection and can replace Spyware Blaster), MalwareBytes for weekly scanning, and I use Avast! for anti-virus needs. I also disable activeX in IE, install IE7Pro, and use mainly Firefox with AdBlock Plus and Download Statusbar (with it, I can easily have everything I download scanned by Avast!).

I prefer to manually update everything, including Windows updates, except Avast! but you can let everything auto update if you prefer.

So I should go ahead and download the Avast Home Edition?

Yes! Just download Avast!, go to their website to register (if you feel queasy about giving out your email address, just use a disposable one), and enjoy!

It will delete them fine, but like all AVs they only know whats in their virus definitions, the definitions are like human virii in which say you get inoculated for smallpox you have the marker so your immune system will hunt and kill it, same with AVs which is why I stress that safe surfing and updating your applications and OS is paramount.

    My current security is....

    Avast free for AV
Spywareblaster for those known nasty activeX and websites (this app does not run so safe to use with other security apps as it just adds known malicious sites to the IE or Fx exceptiosn list so those sites dont get a chance to install anything, prevention more than cure)

Windows Vista Firewall behind a NAT, SPI router.

Avast I like as it updates frequently and works and protects my PCs fine, but you need also to have maybe Firewall, AntiMalware software too, so please do let us know what you already have installed and what your Windows version is.

    Hi

Well if you have found 26 things that have been flagged as malware then I would be advising you to follow this guide READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide and then start a new thread in our malware forum and let the mawlare experts work this out with you, they are extremely good at this and knowing whats what.

    :)

I would suggest that you use the three guides/tutorials --- in the order they have been posted in this thread.

In Halo's link --- you'll find info as to the purpose and proper usage of MSconfig.
