    Yup, guess it's never enough!!

The big 3 are branch plants anyway, so why would they ask for/want bailouts here? rolleyes Let the "parents" take care of it. :-D

I wouldn't be surprised if they're asking for bailouts wherever they are located in the world. ;)

How come the motor industry feels it has the right to go cap in hand to the powers that be and request $39 billion? We had much the same scenario when Nissan UK approached our lame government and asked for much of the same, only days after the same lame government had bailed the banks out to the tune of c. £17 billion. I didn't read anywhere that the builders or the window manufacturers had asked for aid, they are just left to dig their way out of a deepening ditch. It's so hard to believe that the recession is cutting so deep. A cut of 50,000 jobs at these two companies alone, and pension plans in turmoil. I am working only 3 days next week, who knows, I could be out of a job before the end of the year. I know what it's like to be on the dole and I feel for the people who have lost their jobs recently through no fault of their own. What a tragic waste of skills and experience.
Not that any management positions will be jeopardised, of course.

Sorry about the ranting, it's a passion of mine.

I read the same and both GM and Ford USA have asked for more money from UK government, while I agree with the bail out of the banks (but would have liked all the bosses sacked right away as they millions they made will keep them going in life), I dont sadly agree with abiling out everyone else, its a tough world and companies come and go, we have never bailed out failing companies in the past so why start now, and what agrivates me more is that in the face of an economic downturn is that Ford and GM UK both put the prices of their cars up by 5%!!!!! they should be reducing them by 50% to stimulate a buying market for the 100K+ cars sitting on fields unsold! (and built in the majority before the £ changed its value against the Euro, so another scam, they will sell you a car built a year ago for the new increased price) Sorry but this is a kick in the face to the public and the bosses of those two companies should be removed, especially if my tax ££s are used to bail them out... will like a few of my friends NEVER buy Ford or GM again.

Joey I agree with you other areas have not been handed out aid and the building trade is one thats massivily affected, reading the Equidity markets like I do, we are being sold bad news when companies are actually making a profit, may not be the one their anal-ysts [sic] predicted but still a profit..... sadly news agencies are portraying doom and gloom when its not as bad as it could be.. biggest con is the price of petrol/gas its now $35 ish a barrel and the price at the pumps has not changed much, actually creaping up slightly, from the highs last year that saw it at $150 a barrel, so why does the public not get the reduction in cost at the pump!? we hit £1.15 a litre in UK at the peek of $150 now we are at £0.90 a litre and barrel is at $35! math no work here as price at pump should be £0.60+

    /rant for Sunday

Our turn to do what Stubby? Prop up a company that can't sell its goods? What's the bloody point? Keep producing crap that nobody wants? How the heck are they going to repay the taxpayer with interest on these loans? Plus it's not as if this is the first time this has happened either. This time, the overpowerful union will either give in or it's shut the door time.

GM are asking the Belgian government for help also and threatening to close the plant in Antwerp if it is not forthcoming.
Ford have a huge plant in Genk that is in the south of the country and are cutting the workforce dramatically but i do notice they are not cutting the management teams,a bit ironic wouldn't you say.

I agree Augie, what is the point, before christmas many retailers slashed prices so that they could turn in some sort of profit, many did, not as good as they wanted but because of huge price reductions many buyers including myself bought things I may not have due to good value, the car industry thinks and more so GM and Ford think they are above everyone else, they are not other makers are cutting prices of cars to sell, not worth selling nothing at a high premium over selling many and a lower premium!

While the press are hooked into their scam I AM NOT, they need to start to sell cars at a resonalble price, its been long known that prices in UK are at least £3K over what our US and Euro friends pay for the like for like cars, the £s strenght is just an excuse.

Personally I tend to have my heart rule my head and buy Italian cars.

Augie, Halo I couldn't agree with you more. It's come to a point now where we ALL are just 'kicking a dead horse.' Why should the Big 3 even attempt to get themselves out of this mess when they have damn near all the countries in the world giving them the money to stay afloat? Where's the incentive? IMHO, the time is long overdue for them to either sink or swim. Get rid of the unions and file for Chapter 11 and, if need be, start from scratch. They apparently don't want to help themselves, so let 'em sink!

Personally, I haven't bought an American car for years and have no plans to in the forseeable future. I have a Mercedes and we just got rid of our '04 Chrysler Pacifica and bought my wife an 'E'-Class Mercedes. Until American quality and safety become a #1 priority for American cars, I'll stick with Mercedes!

Agreed Stubby, they dont wish to help themselves if they did they would be making prices attractive to customers to stimulate sales and car turnarounds, they are not!! in the caes of GM they are trying their best to off load other arms of theirs as in SAAB, they bought this company thinging it attractive to make a profit, now its not they want to wash their hands of it!!!! leaving it to the Swedish Gov to pick up the wreckage.

I feel for the workers in the motor industry and the 3rd party workser in the parts companies but the main companies in Ford, GM etc are screwing you all over, they want to capitalise on profit over trying to restructure the company and from grass roots build it up again, NO WAY in this era can you con your buying public no matter how good your cars maybe.

Was a time back when the Italian Gov paid 1/3 of the value of a car or 5000 Euro IIRC to anyone buying a new one to stimulate not only sales in the industry but moving folk to greener cars, this is what ford and GM need to be doing, drop the price of cars by a 1/3rd to generate sales, if you dont sell cars your DONE in business and making a small loss is better than disapearing fully as I mentioned earlier I will never buy a ford or GM car again, no matter how good they may be or look, their business strategy of upping the price in an economic downturn to con the buyer is criminal and no way will I ever vote to bail them out with my tax £££s.

When we were young we purchased from Ford and GM by letting our hearts rule and not our heads. Yeah, they looked good but their quality was lousy. The last 2 have been Toyotas and we are really impressed by their quality AND service. The Echo at 10 years *young* is still going strong!! *knock wood*

The manufacturing jobs in the Western world have been disappearing slowly over the years and mostly service jobs remain. Since that started to happen, my thought was that the western world could turn into 3rd world countries if the manufacturing side would disappear. Service jobs just don't pay as well. Multinationals just look for increased profits and don't give a hoot about where they're locating as long as profits increase. If profits turn lower as predicted it's seen as a loss even though a profit was made. Money doesn't have any borders.

When are these CEO's taking responsibilities for their own Co's downfall by their short sightedness due to their short term goals for maximizing profits and not looking at long term strategy?

Why then should we pay for their failure? I feel sorry for all the people who are dependent on the car industry.

I love how the article says 'executives pay was SLASHED (by 10%). WTF! I only get $9million instead of $10million. ;)

I won't really go into politics/economics as this is not the forum for it. Remember the old saying 'Don't mess with Mother Nature.'? 'Don't mess with the market!'

Come on Canada and you other countries, bend over! :kissmy
