While everyone is sitting relaxed in the lounge and chatting about anything interesting, take a few minutes off and listen to this South African flautist perform pure magic. It may interest you guys to know that Wouter (the W in his name is pronounced like the English V) is also an expert IT man!!!

His first number, Khokho (pr. KOKO) is very catchy and will have your feet and hands tapping to the rhythm and humming with the choristers. Duel is virtually an "argument" - if you like - between the flute and guitar, trying to outdo each other in virtuosity, while Half Moon is just ever so soothing and restful.

Herbie Mann? Never heard of him. Is he also a flautist? Will google the name and see what I can come up with.

I didn't know about Wouther either until last Saturday evening, just prior to the 6.00 p.m. news on one of our TV stations, Khokho was playing, but I only caught the last minute or so of it, and then I frantically began phoning, googling, e-mailing, and eventually someone at TV2 (S.A.) told me who the man is, and - at the age of (almost!) 75, I was hooked on his music!

Will be back later, and thanks for that name - going to look it up now!

Yes - I've been listening to Herbie since his Memphis Underground album.

    I really enjoyed your links!

PM me if you like and we'll arrange for you to hear some I couldn't find on the net.

EDIT: Like his Bird In A Silver Cage and Turtle Bay albums.

Augiedoggie, you mention Black Mambasa - are you perhaps referring to our authentic Zulu a-capella group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo? Here is their very first number after the group was founded by one Josef Shabalala somewhere in the 1980's, and which rocketed them to fame: "HOMELESS." Josef himself has a very unique voice - listen carefully and you'll hear that he sings in a sort of tremelo...

They are now known worldwide and have received several Grammy awards for their performances. Because I have a fair working knowledge of the isi-Zulu language, I can fully appreciate their singing. Yes, I like their music!

Exactly Kim, sorry about the typo. I got to know them when Paul Simon played a tour and released some albums with them too.

I heard Simon's visit wasn't welcomed and had something to do with the killing of a member of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who became popular here by the way.

Well, I couldn't find any news about that, perhaps Kim can expound on it.

I did a quick google and found the following on the deaths in the group:

    Black Mambazo leader's wife shot
A special task team has been formed to investigate the shooting of the wife of Ladysmith Black Mambazo leader Joseph Tshabalala. She was killed and he was injured when they were fired on at the Tshabalala'sClaremont home in Durban. The singer was shot in the hand.

Police have offered a reward of up to R50 000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Ntombizanele 'Nellie' Shabalala's killer. She was the wife of Ladysmith Black Mambazo leader Joseph Shabalala.

A grudge is thought to be behind the murder of the wife of Ladysmith Black Mambazo founder Joseph Shabalala in Clermont, Durban. Ntombizanele 'Nellie' Shabalala (49), her husband and two friends had just arrived at their home when they were attacked by a lone gunman.

Police have arrested a second man in connection with the murder of Nellie Shabalala, wife of the leader of famous vocal group Ladismith Black Mambazo. The man is a relative of the Shabalala family.

A 42-year-old son of Ladysmith Black Mambazo star Joseph Shabalala, Vivian Nkosinathi Shabalala, has been granted bail of R20 000 in the Pinetown magistrate's court on Monday. He was arrested after his stepmother was shot dead.

Nkosinathi Shabalala (42), son of Ladysmith Black Mambaso leader Joseph Shabalala, has appeared in the Pinetown magistrate's court, charged with the murder of Joseph's wife Nellie (49) in May.

Ben Shabalala, a longtime member of of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, has been shot and killed in Durban.

Apparently Ben was murdered by a security guard (white, I believe) and form what I could gather, Paul simon testified in court against this man. However, I don't have any further info on this case right now - will see what else I can find and post it here.

Apologies for the long silence - unfortunately there were some important issues to take care of, but now that I have a few moments to spare, has anone seen this yet? Whoever programmed it (and others like it) is an absolute genius! Wish I possessed this king of computer knowledge, but alas, alack and all that jazz, I fall under the really "primitive" users, and unlikely to learn much more at my ripe old age!!!
