We are running out of storage space on our HP Proliant server. It currently has 2 72.8 GB Ultra320 scsi hard drives in it. We looked into using 3 more of the same hard drive but it will cost around $1,500 to do so. I was wondering, is it possible to use, say, an external 1 TB high speed USB hard drive to add storage space to the server?

Should be easily possible to do that.

It might be worth your while to look into NAS as well.

Do you have any recommendations for a rack mounted NAS device with a fair amount of storage space?

Most of the time, NAS boxes can be purchased as just boxes ready to accept HDDs, leaving you to decide on how much storage space you need.

Personally I have never seen a rack mounted NAS, but then again I haven't been looking for them...rolleyes

I'd probably use a RAID rack.
