Received that in the email, although I do remember the lunch counters at Woolworths well. As a matter of fact they were known for less then appetizing food.
The more I search my memory banks, seems they fed those who couldn't afford to pay. I'll have to look that up.

One of my happiest memories with my dad happened at a Woolworth's diner when I was about 8ish. He taught me how to blow the wrapper off a straw like a projectile there. :-D

I remember Woolworth in the 50s very well, My mother worked at the firm and after school i would go down there and sit at the snack bar (i don't remember a restaurant) and wait until she finished work.
The best part was i got free milkshakes and cookies because mum was an employee.
You brought some really nice memories flooding back with this post Darlene.

(apologies for jackin this thread with talk of yoghurt and curry Darlene)

It's a very popular dish over here, can either cook up your own or nip out to a local takeaway. When I have one it's the full works; Chicken Korma basmati rice, Naan Bread (hot out the oven-or warm out the bag if you had to go on foot to the takeout :-D) Mint dip, mixed salad, onion bhaji's..and goodness knows what else, i'm just such a pig lol

Agree with you on this one Fred.

Know what Darlene I have no idea, but its been popular for many many years, and no matter what city or town you goto in the UK your likely to find both Chinese and Curry Houses, but Curries could be not only from India, but Pakistan and Thailand, popular is Indian though..... guess its over the years become an institution like Tea.

    Like Mexican food here huh

Indeed, guess various areas or countries in the world have their favourites and many are not indigenous to the country, hence Indian here in UK and Mexican in your part of the USA.

In part likely due to large populations of said counties people, migrating to different parts of globe, which is good as many foods I may not have tried, tried Vietnamese food out last month in London for 1st time and was superb.

Historical inheritance from when India was a part of the British Empire in the days of Queen Vicky. A lot of cutural ideas were brought back including curry. Apparently, there are more curry houses in Britain than there are in India.

    Phantom Brigadier Britches

Not just popular in England, either. Plenty of curry joints, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Mexican in just about every food plaza and shopping mall, here in Aust., too.

Prefer to cook my own when I have the time. But there are way different kinds of curries. The Thai Indonesian and Asian curries have little in common with the Indian/Pakistani curries, apart from both being hot and tasting yummy, i.m.o. I cooked yellow chicken curry tonight, (Thai style). :drool - Had Subway steak and cheese Sub for lunch, (yum!) - think I'll pass on the McD's, (yeck!).

I love curry (i am a Brit after all) but here in Belgium they are big on Chinese or Pizza.
In Brugge we have 1 Thai restaurant and 2 Indian but maybe 40 Chinese and another 30 pizza outlets.

Didn't know Woolworth's was in the UK but remember them here, when my mom and I both worked in the Loop (downtown Chicago) we'd go there for stocking stuffers at Christmas and look at the animated windows at Carson's and Field's, nice memory. Remember the downtown store having a food counter but, don't thing the other stores did.
