I have no idea how many remember, but I posted a story from work a long while back, about the guy who thought that it's quite possible to fit desktop Ram into a laptop, if you have access to a dremel. Today I talked to another one of those rare gems... The conversation went as follows:

Me: Well, sir, this is performance RAM, so you if you want the full performance that we advertise you need to configure it correctly in your BIOS. What voltage have you been running this memory at?
Customer: I don't remember, let me go to the BIOS and look…
    Me: Of course. *waits*
Customer: Okay, so which unit am I looking for here? Megahertz? Nanoseconds?
    Me: …
Me again, after recovering: Well, er, voltage would be measured in volts.
    Customer: Is that the frequency?

    It went downhill from there.

Thankfully, by the time I got home my husband had gotten bored waiting for me and opened a bottle of shiraz. My brain cells are slowly recovering.

    "nanoseconds"?

that would be an interesting way of showing your memory voltage

:-D Mimsy, I bet you get some crazy calls!

I can take working memory out of my laptop, use my dremel tool on it and it won't work in a desktop PC. I got some dremel skillz.. ;)

So what? There's nothing wrong with not knowing all your hardware settings off the top of your head. I certainly don't. Go in your BIOS and look, I don't mind waiting. I do mind if you don't know what you're doing when you're in there though. :p

What I wanna know is how come you ask people for things like voltage and all I ever get from tech is 'please shut down your computer and turn it back on' (not even a please reboot your computer). :(

    LOL

I would think you have tons of stories and they are the reason for the 'first, please restart your computer and see if that magically fixes the problem.' :-D

honestly though sometimes a restarts does fix the problems :p

Oh, I'm sure it does, but even when I tell them I've already done a restart, they say let's try it again. :p

Thankfully, I haven't had to call tech support very often and the one time it was a hardware malfunction and I got a whole new laptop.:-D

Tech support is the most frustrating especially when you know more than they do -__- Honestly most of them have there little manuals in front with step by step guides for the most common things. Even if your situation is completely different they will still run you through the same basic steps that merely waste your time forgoing any real help.

They do have good tech support out there but you will only find them at the higher tiers for the most part.

I'm second tier... and none of us have read a manual of any kind in years. Matter of fact, that's a point of pride for us. :p

    Laura,
I ask for voltages and stuff because we do RAM upgrade tech support, and there's two kinds: Standard RAM, where you plug it in and (ideally) forget about it, and just move on to enjoy a faster computer. And then there's the Performance RAM. I try to explain it to my customers as "the sports car version", that gives them much higher performance, but at way higher maintenance and shorter shelf life. And if all you ever use your computer for is the equivalent of puttering to work every day while obeying all speed limits, then you don't need it. Buy standard.

    Make more sense? :)

Not the phonecalls, no. But when I was on the email team, they let us do it from home.

well i just got off the phone with one of the most competent tech support guys ive talked to in a long time. i'll spare you all the long story, but ive had a problem with a database for a long time. all information i had was wrong since i didnt set it up to begin with so i was completely lost. turns out, web access to the database was not through IIS like i was told. the tech support guy was no trial and error. he remote accessed into my server and fixed it in 5 minutes. its refreshing to know there are still excellent tech support people out there.

Darn, there I was thinking that you are a philanthropist or a politician. ;) :-D

Well, until my restructuring of the Canadian government, I have to be a good little capitalist and work. Now if any of you want to donate to the takeover of Canada fund, I will accept donations. :-D

  24. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

They don't really put a lot of stock in book knowledge where I work. Do you know computers? Can you prove it? Good. Do you have customer service experience? Cool. When can you start? LOL

  25. oma

    oma MajorGeek

Well... wouldn't you know that we already have a conservative government, so not much change would happen if you would be our next self crowned emperor. LOL Health Care is in the hands of the provinces so the feds can do nothing about that one. ;)

Asking for donations seems particularly standard requests from politicians. No you're not considered a charity Fred. :p As for donations for the anticipated takeover, guess that Canadian $$ wouldn't do it. It's way below the USA currency and to round it off, the Queens picture is on it. Guess we'd have to change that into Fred's picture when you show up at the border? The Queen of England would not be amused. LOL

PS: or would you rather move to Vizima, Temeria?

  26. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

If I can live in the wealthy part of Vizima, where the streets are safer and the laws are actually being enforced, sure. Can I be friends with Geralt? He is really generous when it comes to buying drinks for redheads, and he has this way of moving that just oooozes testosterone... :drool
