I have a laptop that logs on the logs off right away without actually getting into windows. Here is what I have done.

I have tried doing repair install, this didn't fix anything. The next thing I did was put the userinit.exe file back into the windows\system32 directory. It actually wasn't even there. This didn't fix it either.

    Please help!!!!!

Here is the information I found last night regarding this problem. I've seen it several times in the past and last night was the first time I was able to solve it without reinstalling.

You have already copied the userinit.exe file back to the \system32 folder - but perhaps performing the second step is what's keeping it from solving your problem as well.

    I wish you luck.

    Enter the Recovery Console

Boot the system using the Windows XP CD-ROM. In the first screen when the Setup begins, read the instructions press "R" (in the first screen) enter the Recovery Console. Type-in the built-in Administrator password to enter the Console. You'll see the prompt reading C:\Windows (Or any other drive-letter where you've installed XP)

Type the following command and press Enter.

    CD SYSTEM32
(If that does not work, try CHDIR SYSTEM32)

    COPY USERINIT.EXE WSAUPDATER.EXE

Quit Recovery Console by typing EXIT and restart Windows.

You'll be able to login successfully as you've created the wsaupdater.exe file (now, a copy of userinit.exe)

    Run regedit

    Navigate to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\

In the right pane, you should see

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\wsaupdater.exe,

Change it so that it reads:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\userinit.exe

That should solve the problem, if the malware was the one that caused the issue.

yesterday my computer suddenly stopped working and i knew it was either someone trying to hack into the computer or a virus.
They had changed my desktop image and there was some kind of notification popping up on the notification bar.

i automatically went to try & see what what happening by looking at the task manager and it wouldnt work, i was getting a error message saying that it was disabled by the administrator.

I decided to disconnect the computer from the internet and see if i could sort it out. I then ran a scan and it showed i had the following on my pc:

    hacktool.rootkit
    suspicious.MH690.A

i decided to let Norton sort them out and then it asked me to back my pc up so i did and then it needed restarting.

i restarted the computer and then when i logged in it would automatically log me out.

i started the computer in safe mode and then when i tried to log in as administrator it still would log me out.

i think the file that was infected was called C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe

my computer has windows xp pro and my laptop has windows xp home, i dont have the disk for the computer so is there any other way i can repair the file or can i use my other windows xp home disk?

    C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe

I hope someone can help me as i have installed my course software on it.

Using a Windows XP Home CD to access the recovery console to copy the userinit.exe file would be fine on a Windows XP Pro system.

The information I posted above only corrected the immediate log off after log on problem - you still have other problems on the system - including the virus that caused this problem so once you're able to log on be aggressive and continue to clean the system up.

    i have gone into recovery console and done the following;

    c:\windows\system32\

    then i typed in

    copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe

    so then it becomes c:\windows\system32\copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe

i press enter and it says "the system cannot find the file specified" & goes to C:\windows\system32>

is there something i am doing wrong?

*pressing F8 at startup and choosing the last known good config.- STILL LOGGED ME OUT
