i cant even load up in safe mode but once i put the 512mb memory back in, it comes up normally.

the memory sticks im using is 1gb ddr 400mhz

but the other 1gb stick is the same make which making up 1.5gb memory

Use Everest and tell us what mobo do you have.

Did you go to www.crucial.com to check? I also look at the manufacturer's page for the maximum amount of RAM. If crucial says 2GB but the manufacturer says 1.5GB, then you have to go with the manufacturer because they know what was done to the motherboard.

i think there is something wrong aswell because I can run the new 1gb stick or the old 1gb stick but not just together otherwise windows wont load up.

I got the new 1gb stick in now and taken the old one out and it's working now so it's compatable.

well i think i know what the problem is, according to crucial website my motherboard can only handle 1024mb maximum so I am doing well to run 1.5GB.

thanks for all your help guys

"my motherboard can only handle 1024mb maximum "

Are you sure?My eyes see 2048.On Gigabyte site also.

yes im sure i done a scan and it said maximum memory capacity 1024mb. 2 slots with 512mb maximum. and in red it said please note do not exceed this limit.

at the top left hand corner the words said the following "according to our scan, it looks you have the maximum memory installed"

    here is the link http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/viewscanbyid.aspx?id=55090F5C31D926C3

Just looked at Gigabytes site and your eyes are OK. 2GB DDR266 max.

The motherboard handles DDR266. Sexyand81 was installing 400MHz sticks. Would that be a conflict or compatibility problem?

The motherboard might support up to 2GB of PC210/2700, but only 1GB of PC3200. Strangers things have been done to chipsets. Do you have access to other memory speeds, just for testing purposes?

    That's right Mimsy.Just as I writed above.2gigs on 266.So that's the limit of the mobo.And it's conflict.Like Mimsy said:2GB of PC210/2700, but only 1GB of PC3200.

yes i did put in 2 sticks of 1gb ddr 266 and the same thing happened again but when i take it out and leave 1 in and put in 512mb back in it works.

I just dont get it lol

If it were mine, by now I would probably just threw my hands up, installed the max that allowed me to use the machine, and surrendered.
    But that's just me.

I have surrendered to the machine I have left 1 stick 1gb ddr 400mhz and a 512mb ddr 133mhz in and leaving it at 1.5gb memory

I hope you realize that your 400mhz stick will clock itself down to the slower speed.
But the lower speeds usually have better(lower)clock numbers so could make up some of the difference.

Its ok my computer is running reasonably fast as it is so i'm ok with that at the moment.

Educated guess: Bad memory controller on the motherboard. It's not really fixable, you'd need to replace the entire board. I would just settle for 1.5GB, mainly since the performance difference between 1.5GB and 2GB is very small. :)
