    Hi!

About a week ago I noticed my browser was being redirected every time I clicked results from a search engine search.

I ran Spybot and Ad-Aware, and ran an anti-virus scan (I use AntiVir) and they came up clean.

I came here, found READ & RUN ME FIRST, downloaded MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy, ran them and my problems seemed to stop.

A couple days later the problem returned, and I started getting countless AntiVir popup notifications:"

Virus or unwanted program 'TR/ATRAPS.Gen [trojan]'
    detected in file 'C:\WINDOWS\vfytjkn.qxt."

Tried deleting the file through the antivirus program and it immediately returned. Renaming it also didn't have an effect.

Came back & went through all the steps in Run & Read Me First.

I was able to successfully download everything and run it EXCEPT for ComboFix. Every time I pointed my browser to the bleepingcomputer.com site to download it, the browser immediately crashed before I could even see the page. I tried this in Firefox (what I usually use) and IE. Same outcome.

I ended up downloading ComboFix.exe on another machine, burned it to a disc, and transferred it to my desktop. When I clicked on the icon I got a small box labeled ComboFix with green bars that looked like it was loading, but then nothing.

    So I don't have a ComboFix log.

The logs from the other scans are attached here.

Thanks in advance for your help - and apologies in advance if I've run anything incorrectly!

Are you sure it is a download problem. Or is it a running problem. I see the below from March 22 indicating that you have recently run ComboFix.
    Code:
    "C:\"
    32788R~1 Mar 22 2009 "32788R22FWJFW"
    COMBOFIX Mar 22 2009 "ComboFix"

    "C:\Documents and Settings\Zabeth\Local Settings\Temp\"
    cf6331.exe Mar 22 2009 389120 "CF6331.exe"
    cf6922.exe Mar 22 2009 389120 "CF6922.exe"
Try shutting down Ad-Aware's Ad-watch and Avira and see if you can download it. Otherwise try downloading it using another PC and then copy to this PC. Either way continue on with the below.

Uninstall Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4 which is the old version.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now run Ccleaner!
See if you can run ComboFix now
Now goto this link Using MGtools and download the new version of MGtools.exe from the black bold print link in the first sentence. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\combofix.txt if it ran
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thanks for your help.

I think you were right - it was a running problem with ComboFix. After I followed the steps in your reply I was able to get ComboFix to run.

One weird thing about ComboFix, though - I got warning notices that I hadn't disabled my antivirus software, even though I had disabled it. Not sure what caused that.

I've attached the logs you requested - except MGLogs.zip, which I can't attach because I get an error message that MGLogs is already attached to this thread. Is there a way to get around this? I checked the Attaching Items HowTo but it didn't mention this problem.

Don't worry about it. It ran just fine.

This occurred because I forgot to tell you to run the new MGtools program I had you download.

If everything is working okay (you forgot to tell me), we don't need the new log since your other logs show that what I wanted to remove was removed.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Ha, okay. Well, that explains it then. Yes, everything seems to be working fine now, thanks very much! I'm assuming I don't need to run the new MGtools?

I'll go ahead and run through the rest of the steps detailed in your last reply. Thanks again for all your help, I'm very relieved. Yay!
