Oh,dear. What in God's name was going on there? The gadge that was with her surely knew she was in trouble at an early stage and never even had the wherewithall to contact any outside help? 4'10" and nearly 35 stone. What a way to go, half woman, half couch.

I'm sorry, but how is any of that even possible? :confused

The woman was 'grafted to the sofa'? So how was she obese if she couldn't move and how do you live at all if you can't get up to use the bathroom? You'd quickly die of infection.

The whole story seems odd. Gross and odd. And very sad if true.

Well it appears that she didn't get up to use the bathroom. Something had to be psychologically wrong with her or even him.

I'm going to have to go with the double header on this one. Both of 'em are nuts. :foolish I just hope something can be done for the kids!

    From the story:
"Neighbors say they had no idea Grinds lived at the duplex, though they had seen Thomas and some children outside."

    "People are strange."

few too many mcdonalds meals i think. after the first year or two of being stuck to a couch, youd think she would have gotten help. sorry, no sympathy.

Reminds me of that article, which I think I read on this board, of a woman who hadn't left the toilet for years, and was fused to it, so to speak.:eek

Laura...u would think infection would set in at some point. But it all depends if and when her skin started to break down. I'm sure once the bathroom issue became an issue this is when the skin more than likely started to infuse with the couch. Not to be too graphic, but when the skin is wet and dries again it starts to mend and stick to whatever she's apart of...may it be a couch or the toilet, as one person did.

I don't know but I can almost guess that the smell everyone was smelling was not only the bathroom issue(I'm trying really hard not to be graphic:-o) but also her skin having opened wounds and 'infection' setting in. Because when opened wounds get infected they can and will smell pretty bad. This is one of the reasons why patients have to be turned every 1 or 2hrs sometimes every half hour, depending on the severity of the sores/ulcers on their bodies(sorry the nurse in me is coming out:p).

My thought is maybe they both had problems. Maybe she was depressed and one night decided to get a pint of ice cream:yum and watch some TV, as most of us have done at one time or another. It's just she never got up...sorry I should not joke about this because depression is a very serious issue if that was her problem. But her being a 'true couch potato as someone said...no sympathy here:tired. I believe that everyone has problems and everyone deals with them in different ways but to sit on the couch for 4yrsrolleyes:confused:(. After the first the year it's time to go see somebody:cry.

My mom was just telling me about Oprah yesterday. She had on a morbidly obese teen and his mother.

The kid was bound to his bed. Kind of like the lady in this story, but not attached.

Anyway, they had to come get him out of the house....carry him out.

Now, I'm sorry, but don't you think the people enabling these house bound individuals should be brought up on charges? What is wrong with a mother???

I didn't see the show, but apparantly the mother made some comment about the kid not wanting to eat his broccoli so she had to put cheese on it. Had to? Come on! wtf? If my kids say eww...I say I don't care, eat it anyway. Believe me, they do.

As far as all that you just described huskies, just :puke

LauraR...I knew that episode was coming on but I missed it yesterday. Anyway, I agree with you, if I put something in front of you to eat I expect you to eat it. This is not a restaurant and I am not a short order cook. My son is 16 now and stand at 6'ft. and I still tell him to eat his veggie, like them on not. But I also told my son when he was younger to go outside and ride your bike, run around and play...instead of sitting on the couch exercising his thumbs. At 15, 16, or 17yrs. old you couldn't find me in the house and definitely not at 18. I said these ages because this young man did not get this size at 18yrs old, he had to get there, and I fault his mom.

But Laura, you said :puke to what I described earlier...you should have been there with the actual smell:crap:crap:crap:crap:crap...and then...:-o:(:puke:puke:puke

Unfortunately, it comes with the job...LOL

It is said there are over 2,000,000 morbidly obese in the US right now stuck in their beds, unbelievable huh? The ones they have to remove walls of a house in order to get them out.
Seems to me the people who feed them should be held partly responsible also.

Aside from those sideshow types, America is turning into a nation of porkers, what the hell is going on?
Disneyland had to reinforce and rebuild some rides due to people doubling in size and weight since the 50's. Geeze (

There is absolutely no excuse for this.......not only for her but for all obese people! Nowadays, there is all kinds of help that you can get.....to sit there and eat yourself to death is something that I just bring myself to be sympathetic to... and to be fused to your toilet or couch!! Wow.....where the hell was her family and boyfriend???? Sorry for the rant but geez.....did these people lose their minds as well??:confused

I had no idea it was that many people in the US that is morbidly obese, let alone stuck to chairs/toilets and such. This is absolutely crazy and the bad part about this is every food industry in the US super size every meal:yum. Not that you have to get it but it seems even when you go to the restaurants they pile your plate with oversize chicken-legs:drool (chemically treated of course) along with a 5lb bag of fries:yum to go with it.

As far as the children or young people that are obese, I blame the parents, because you have to tell your children the good and the bad of everything. I know the last thing you as a parent want to do is take food away from your child but at some point you must. IMO, if you don't that also becomes child abuse:cry.

after seeing a show, 900 pound mom, she went for a gastric bypass and died then people got scared and calling for help from all over the country. 2 million is just the ones they know of, there might be more, said to be over 100 in Texas alone.

Once again, IMO...I think gastric bypass surgery is a fad same as plastic surgery:cool. About 10-15yrs. ago you didn't hear about 'everybody' getting plastic surgery, that was only for Hollywood. Now it seems everybody & their grandpa is getting some type of surgery to their bodies or faces...it's crazy. Who would let their 13yr. old daughter get a nose and/or a boob job because the kids are picking on her in MIDDLE SCHOOL:cry? If it's for health reasons that one thing, but just because your bff has bigger boobs:( (they run in her family) you want to have this done. This is part of growing up and I fault the parents once again. 1, for allowing these kids to get to this size and 2, for allowing these kids to dictate the life “they” want. What happened to parents telling the kids what to do and not the kids telling the parents what to do:p? Instead of letting these kids get gastric bypass surgery, (I know its adults too) they should get them a bike, roller skates, skateboards or something besides PS3, or X-Box. It has reached a point where the game makers have said ok…let’s get these kids off the couch. Let’s make WII, at least they will have to swing their arms and if the parents are smart, they will buy the games that make their legs move as well. As far as the adults, maybe they’ve had problems all of their lives, and if this surgery will help them (health wise) then maybe they should have a fresh start. However, with this new beginning, they must continue eating properly and excising. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t believe everybody should be the same size, because I’m no button hole or size3, and I’m also not trying to be critical of our plus size population. But just sitting on the couch and complaining about it or getting stuck to the couch doesn’t help anything or anyone.

I know I'm really gonna get it for thisLOL...But the saying goes…"everything is bigger in Texas":-D (No pun intended).

Any doctor that would do plastic on someone who isn't even done growing simply for cosmetic reasons should have their license pulled.
Any parent that would allow it should be investigated also.
It's bad enough they are allowing doctors to inject their children as soon as they are born not knowing what the affects are. GRRR
    Sorry whole different rant. :-o

Darlene...you know as well as I do (in the short time I've been here) it doesn't take much for these threads to go to a different place. That's what makes them so interestingLOL. I agree with you, if any doctor gives a pre-teen or teenager plastic surgery is crazy, and if nothing else...greedy:mad. And if these parents even consider something like this, not only is it child abuse, but what kind of message are they sending their kids:(. It's bad enough our young girls (and boys) are looking at magazines and TV shows with these "perfect" people in them and feel as if everybody should look like that...IMPOSSIBLE:boxing. We are all different from head to toe. I was watching the Today Show yesterday and Natalie Morales did a story about her sister and 3yr old niece. The point is, looking at Natalie everyday on this show and seeing how beautiful she is, you would envision everyone in her family looks like her:cool. I think her sister is very pretty, but if you didn’t know who she was you would probably never think they were sisters. Just imagine when you have a person in the family that is a TV star with all the glitz & glam, and then there is you, the plan Jan being compared at every family function:cry(not to say this happens in theirs). You can click this link and you'll see Natalie & her sister-http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/29990193#29990193

And you wonder why these ‘KIDS’ want to jump start their looks, their bodies, their superficial lives.

My son is 16yrs. old 6ft. tall slender model/basketball type good-looking kid and has his fare share of girls. But I’ve told him over and over again don’t let those girls go to your head, because what has been given to you can be taken away:wave, I told my son to be very humble in life. This kid can be friends with anyone and will take up for the weak/nerds and I told him to let his inner beauty shine. I quoted a verse of the song ‘Adore’ by Prince, the verse goes…”if God should one day strike me blind, your beauty I’ll still see. Love is too weak to define just what you mean to me.” So, I try to tell him all the time don’t try to be like these “perfect” people that’s in these magazines or on TV, because trust and believe they are not all “perfect”:(:-o.

I'm not really attracted to 'beautiful' women to be honest. Is Lisa Kudrow considered beautiful? She is very attractive, IMO. All my relationships (including the wife, although I must admit she is the prettiest of all of them) have been with 'plain Janes' as Huskies put it. Ms Morales didn't do much for me to be honest. Thought Dr Warren (is that right?) was hot in the second piece though.
