My computer appears to be infected. While in IE, I continually receive "Internet Explorer encourted an error and needs to shut down" This problem has been getting progressively worse over the last 2 months. 50% of the time it kicks me out of IE, the other 50% it shuts down my computer entirely.

I followed your Malware instructions and am attaching three of the file logs as indicated. Combofix.txt file to follow.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Your problems did not sound like malware and your logs support that theory since they are basically clean. However I would like to see the ComboFix log that you forgot to attach.

You should get an Event Viewer log ( see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427 ) and post it in the Software Forum which is more appropriate for problems like this where an application is crashing.

Thanks for the response. Attached is the combofix log. If anything looks out of whack please let me know.

    Thanks

Okay ComboFix does show one issue. So let's fix that and also since we are fixing this, we will correct a couple other non-malware items.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks for the reply. I have follwed the instructions by uninstalling windows messenger and the older software versions. Re-ran combofix and MGtools as requested. I am attaching the two logs from the combofix and MGtools utilities.

While I'm glad to hear that my problem is not malware related, however after navigating around IE for a while, I still run into the same problem of receiving "Internet Explorer has encountered an error and needs to shut down" at various points while in IE and IE shuts down. It happens randomly but with much frequency. About every 3rd IE error message received also ends up with and complete shutdown and automatic reboot.

If these logs offer anything please let me know. Thanks for your assistance.

Your logs are all good now.

Before I send you off to the Software Forum, let's do the below:

    1. Get that Even Viewer log a mentioned back in msg # 2 and attach it here.
    2. In Internet Explorer click Tools and select Manage Addons and disable all addons. Then reboot and see if you still have problems. If yes, then continue.
    3. Check to see if you have the same problems with IE after booting into safe mode.
    4. Reboot from safe mode into Normal mode and run the below:
Click Start, Run, and enter sfc /scannow and click OK. There is a space after the sfc. This runs System Rile Checker which looks for missing or corrupted system files and attempts to replace/repair them from files on your hard disk or from the CD if necessary. So it will ask for the Windows CD if it needs it.

    Retry IE after running sfc.
