is there freeware that can defrag my computer at startup so i dont have to spend a life time trying to defrag it when im on for personal time?

PS:also if there is a free ware for greatly compressing huge files it would be apreciated as well

I hope he does not mean a 10 GB hard drive because he mentioned 256 MB ram earlier. If this is the case, sorry, use Windows defrag. Your trying to speed up and old pig with no ram. Defrag should take forever :(

Just exactly what type of machine are we discussing here, anyway?

Trust me, this is a dead end. He has 256 MB ram. Thats 2 threads in the same day with people trying to speed up computers with 256 MB ram. Its not happening. He needs more ram or sadly, possibly a new computer. I have not seen a machine sold with 256 MB ram since before XP.

And when was the last time you saw a 10GB hard drive? May have worlds oldest machine.

Hi, welcome to Majorgeeks, perhaps while smoking your crack pipe, you totally missed that were a download site? We don't accept links to other download sites, especially one with such crappy software and crappy user reviews. Winzip is also shareware. Frankly, I would use Winrar over it, and do, if I wanted shareware, which they did not.

It was the crack pipe comment that got me. We just vent a little now and then. It's not meant to be hurtful, but when you read as many posts as so many of us do, it will eventually dent your psyche. I'm out in NY, and I do have an older Dell tower hanging around. It's not spectacular, but it may be better than what you've got. Interested? :cool

    2.4 GHz P4 400 MHz FSB
    512MB PC3200 RAM

    What are your present specs?

Start by removing any programs that you don't want or need.
    Then do a good defrag.
Then we can take a look at the startup list.

So, would you be interested in an old Dell? I have hard drives between 80 and 160 GB, and the Dell discs for XP as well. And in actuality, it's a 2.8GHz, 533MHz FSB CPU. Still the same memory.

I guess it depends how expensive shipping is. There's a UPS store right in town...

Hey mekanic, can he get it for what he paid for the one he has?

  25. the mekanic

    Pretty much.

I don't know about upstaging, but I've been doing this kind of thing locally for quite a while. I just don't know if it would be feasible to get it to the party in question.

Things are tough, and I'm fortunate in some ways, but I'm not in alot of ways. The whole silver lining thing is something that is slowly starting to shine in my life. I know what it feels like to be "down on your luck". So, I try to give back whenever I can, 'cause I've been to some really bad places in life. Lightning strike survivor, moderate sleep apnea (I need a machine to breathe while I sleep), and I live with my father at my age. I have a paper route, and might go back to school through disability, not sure yet.

I did a defrag, fax install, and taught a woman to use Nitro (PDF to Word software) today. She's section 8, barely part time employed, divorced with two kids. It basically cost her a glass of lemonade.

Sorry if this went a little off topic...

Seems that Stubby isn't the only softy around here. Have been known to do stuff like that here at home.
Everybody knows who to come to for help because its hard to say no sometimes.
If I charged for every PC I've disinfected and OS reinstalls for, I could afford to take a good long vacation.

Nothing wrong with that. My mom lives with us since my dad died and I work as a carpet and upholstery cleaner. We (mom, my wife, two boys, a cat, and I) have a roof over our heads, have a car that's paid for and in good shape, and are well fed. I have an overwhelming sense of peace and protection and I wish the same for you.

Probably be best to take Mekanic's offer. MicroCenter has good refurbished deals if you're near one of their stores.

The people behind CCleaner also make Defraggler - a fine program. It CAN actually defrag when you sleep. It has a "Shot down after defrag" option that you activate with a check mark in the drop down menu under Settings. And it works - even in safe mode, which is new for the latest versions. I use that often. I start the defragging late in the evening and go to bed. Defraggler will do the rest and shut down the machine when it's done.

Also has a scheduler (timer). It can defrag free space and you can choose to just defrag exactly the fragmentet files. This way you don't have to run through the full list.

However I would download a trial version of for example PerfectDisk 10 to get of to a good start. Be sure to use the defrag on reboot option. Then continue using Defraggler after the 30 days.

Defragging in safe mode has several advantages. The machine wont fall asleep because those Windows functions doesn't work in safe mode and quite a few files only defrags in safe mode. Defraggler's "Shot down after defrag" option also works in safe mode. Defragglers analyzing is a bit slower in safe mode but it defrags brilliantly...

You need to run as admin if you're on a Vista. Defraggler download is 2.20 MB. You can run it from a USB drive.
