Sounds like if nothing else it was a wake up call.

You don't have teens (I'm pretty sure anyway), Pax. ;)

I would say that mavric is being a responsible parent.

I don't have monitoring software on the computer my kids use....yet. It will be there in a couple of years though.

The parents who should be ashamed are the ones that Don't know what their kids are doing online.

I humbly refrain from taking my beliefs any farther. However, my teen decides to play baseball and gets hit in the mouth and it breaks their jaw, knowing they played baseball isn't going to change the fact that they have a broken jaw. Teaching them how to catch the ball, might have helped.

If you can't trust an alcoholic not to drink, you keep alcohol out of the house. If you can't trust a teen to use the internet respectfully, you keep the internet out of the house, or lock the whole computer, even the room it's in. Lots of people made it through life without the internet.

There's a psychologist on the radio that I listen to a lot, and she'll tell you, if you're going to snoop, you can't be angry with the information you find.

Two wrongs, never make a right.

    No offense Laura.

indeed...the internet is a wonderful thing yet it's also a double edged sword.. a beast if you will. Kids don't tell their parents everything as we know, heck I DIDN'T!

And I had my mother so worried she had private detectives following me when I was in my teens, this was shocking to me and I was furious--invasion of my privacy and all that... but when I look back and think how worried my poor Mom was (she passed away before I grew up properly and got my act together :()

it's no wonder she resorted to such measures, she was frantic and worried SICK. If I'd have had a PC back then I am sure she would have installed monitoring software too.

Also respect what you're saying Paxton, you make alot of good points there, but I also don't think the OP is necessarily wrong for installing the logger.

Apologies for going totally off track, but I definitely disagree with you. You can not compare playing baseball (or being an alcoholic) to being online. You can also teach kids many things and in the end they are just kids. They need supervision and they need direction. They will do things online that we never had access to. They are children. By definition, they are not smart when it comes to many of their actions.

I don't think it's even remotely fair to tell someone that they are being a poor parent by doing what they think is best for their children.

I myself would rather be informed as far as what my kids are doing than blissfully ignorant and naive.

Do I discuss what is right and wrong when it comes to cell phones and computers to my girls? You can bet I do! Do I trust them to, for the most part, do what is right. Absolutely. Does that excuse me from doing what is right as a parent and not paying attention to what they are doing on the computer? Absolutely not.

Would I do that with my husband? Absolutely not. Children and adults are different.

Keylogger would be the least of problems for my - kid. And NO I would not be ashamed tell her that I don't trust her. That's my job to let her know how I feel-PERIOD
That has to be communicated in NO uncertain terms..

  10. Paxton007

    Paxton007 MajorGeek

I guess it's better to KNOW what someone is up to, rather than guess and tear a family apart. I'll never use a key logger, and I wouldn't allow such a thing in my house. I can understand though, I suppose, why someone might want to go that route.

I'd rather sit with the kids and watch them use the internet than have a conversation that started "I know you're going to a party tonight, because I have a key stroke recorder on the computer."

I guess time will tell for sure what I do, but even talking about this makes me disgusted.

As I said, I am out of this conversation. I've said my peace, and just won't sway.

Did the painter come yet? LOL

Yes, whole heartedly for your last post, regarding - knowing what someone is up to .... If not, then its a parents responsibility to find out..

My 2cents worth......if you raise your kids to be honest with you then there is no reason for a keylogger......but if there is no relationship like that and your trust has been broken then it is your responsibility to make sure that they are not doing something that will in the long run hurt them.....and we all know that the internet is a dark and ominous place for youngsters......I am glad my kids show me and tell me "most" everything!

i was going to pull a prank on my domain users with some server side funny times, but with the Conficker worm scaring everyone i thought it would be a bad idea... :(

This is not an April Fools day internet thingy, but about my brother pulling a stunt on that day decades ago, one of the many he did.

As a boss, he did send out one of his employees to a hardware store to buy a baseboard ladder. LOL Off he went...... not to one store only. :-D The store owner sent him along to another one and a third until the last one told him finally the truth. :guitar

I came to this on the recomendation of Kim Kommado. She said this site could offer help with a problem on my lap top. I am shocked that what I got was a lecture on how to and what to do with my children. Wow! You know nothing of my family dynamic and have no creditable way to make such comments about me or my family. Maybe the monitoring software is not there to "spy" on my kids. Did you ever give that a thought.

I had one girl at a sears looking for (in one day) a left handed screw driver, AND Craftsman turn signal fluid for my riding mower. The employees she eventually asked never clued her in, at least while I was there, and one even looked at a computer, and told me they could order it in from another store. lol

I work in the stores of a large joinery firm and often the padawans are sent over for tartan paint or two dozen sky hooks as part of their initiation. The most popular item by far is a glass hammer.

I liked them all as I remember. It's the only movie I saw at a theater where popcorn went into the air (in fear, not because of a group of idiot high school kids.)

Although I took a girlfriend to see 13 Ghosts, and she wanted to leave. Luckily, I drove that day, so we didn't. LOL
