Suddenly I can only connect very slowly to IE 7 or 8.

It was slow in 7 so I installed 8 but it is no better.

I have run all the anti progs I can think of.

    Running XP Pro + SP3.

    Ideas appreciated.

Inside CCleaner there is a list where you can check all your startup functions. Many more of them can be disabled without any consequences. They don't need to be started at boot-up. For example video players start when you click them or when they are activated by a website. That will give you a faster startup: http://majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

The program StartUpLite can do the same: http://majorgeeks.com/StartUpLite_d5583.html

Here's a Majorgeeks article that can help with more optimizing: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=106650

Often times this is caused by having too many security programs installed. What do you run for protection?

I'm running ZoneAlarm, BHO Monitor and AVG all the time.

I use AdAware, SuperAntiSpyware and others weekly.

Thanks again, I will use the progs. you suggest.

What is the name of the program that monitors the BHO items?

    It's BHO Demon.

First off remove BHO. This software hasn't been updated since 2005 and may not be the best for use in 2009.
After you've removed it, reboot and see if browsing has improved at all.
I assume you are running AVG 8.5; if not, download the latest version but do not install it until I mention some things you may want to change to get a bit more speed.

Removing BHODemon doesn't seem to improve matters consistently.
What should I use instead, if anything.

I believe I have attached a screenshot of "Processes" in Task Manager, does this shed any light?

I'm a bit confused. Has your net connection *suddenly* slowed down or is IE *suddenly* taking time to launch??

IE has suddenly decided on a go slow.

So, your browsing/surfing speed is fine, just that IE takes time to launch, right? Once it up every thing is fine?

Not exactly, each site takes a long time to connect.

I do have a Brother printer.
The slow down came about with IE7 installed and it made no difference to the connection speed when I shut off all the "Anti" progs.
I tried IE8 to see if it improved matters but it didn't.
However it proved to be the easiest way to remove IE7.
    I re-installed IE7 but again no improvement.
I may resort to FF but reluctantly.
My Broadband speed is supposedly 8mb but the phone line will only manage about 3.9.

    Thanks for the help.

    Hi

Do me a quick favour and this test, disable ZoneAlarm and see if your IE opens and surfs the internet ok? (unless this was one of your Anti progs shutdown, so even goto the point of uninstalling it as its prone to leaving files running)

Was working on a PC this week with similar issues, and was using XP SP3, AVG8 and ZA, did a bit of uninstalling to get it to a point I knew it would connect ok, and found the cause to be ZoneAlarm and AVG didnt seem to mix well, so installed PCTools freeware firewall instead.

I'v tried without ZA and AVG with no improvement.

    Hi

Ok thats ruled those out, now have you contacted your ISP to have them test the line?

    • What is your broadband type, ADSL, Cable, Sat?
If ADSL, is your PCs modem plugged into the main phone socket or are you using an phone extention cable? if extention then if possible move the PC to the main socket and unplug any other phones and just have modem/router plugged in with the original small phone cable that comes with the pack, trying to rule out interfearance here or an issue with lenght of extention.

I reciently had similar in that speeds where ok when using a phone extention, but dropped off sudernly, decided to do some testing and also called O2 who are my ISP (great customer service BTW) and went through a battery of tests, finally nailed it to the phone extention (gained a 1mb DL increase), doing the test above and moved modem/router to main socket and used a long Cat5e cable to connect router to PC as they dont degrade signal.

Also with ADSL, you have DSL Filters, if you have a spare one swap out the one connected to the line now.

    • If Cable, theoretically you should have any issues with extentions as they are not phone cables, so check with ISP on any service issues.

    • If Satelite, I have no experience with these connections for troubleshooting so check ISP for service issues.

    • This PC connecting via wireless at all? if so plug the PC in with a cat5e cable to the modem/router to see if wireless signal is the issue.

I've obtained another PC and connected this in the same way to the router(by cable), and this connects to the net virtually instantly.

So it is back to the PC.

Yes and no malicious items were found.

The only difference is that the other PC only has SP2 because the it appears that the latest Nvidia drivers do not like SP3.

Is BHO Monitor part of Spyware Detector? Have you tried disabling it? You had a slow connection to IE7 before you installed IE8 and that another computer can use the same connection without any problems. Did you use your restore points to go back before the problem started happening? Did you try doing an IE repair? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378/en-us
Have you emptied your cache? Did you get any Windows updates just before the problem started? If so, the restore point thing should help you. Did you just get AVG or have you had it all along?

BHo has been removed; no difference.
    Tried restore points; No effect.
    Completely removed and re-installed IE7.
    Have had AVG all along.
Please explain how to empty cache.
