Virtumonde. No internet connection.

Hi folks. A few days ago I got infected with virtumonde. Superantispyware, Spyware Doctor and Malwarebytes all detected and cleaned files. Adaware and NOD32 detected nothing.

Following the "clean" odd behaviour remained (I got redirected when trying to view web pages) then 2 days ago my Internet connection went down.

I've used a laptop connected to my router and that's working fine. I've attempted to install Trend antivirus and it won't install.

Combofix won't run so I can't post a log file.

SaS and Malwarebytes report clean sweeps but I'm guessing there must be something lingering due to the behaviour of my machine.

I'm posting the MGtools log for you to look at. Any suggestions would be gratefully recieved but if I need to wipe re-install windows so be it.

I would like to see these logs - they are retrievable in these locations:

    C:\Documents and Settings\andrew southall\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-2009-04-01 (12-41-06).txt

    .............

    C:\Documents and Settings\andrew southall\Application Data\SUPERAntiSpyware.com\SUPERAntiSpyware\Logs\

(Get me the log that showed which was removed the first time you ran it, either one of these 2 logs: 03-31-2009/ 03-30-2009)

try renaming it to 123.exe or 123.com and attach the log it creates if successfully run.

I'll review your logs and get back to you with a set of instructions as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience during this time. Whilst I am checking the over could you attach the logs from MBAM and SAS and also ComboFix if you are indeed able to run it after a rename.

    Thanks
    Kes

Thanks for the reply. Here are the infected logs.

Combofix won't run even with a rename.

    1) Please put your machine into normal start up mode before we continue as requested in in the R&R.

    2) Is your copy of Spyware Doctor 6.0 a paid program or is it just a trial that you downloaded? If just a trial, uninstall it now before going any further as it will not fix anything anyway.

    3) Did you knowingly install the below? If you didn't then please uninstall it.
    • WinPcap 3.0 alpha 4

    4) Also FYI: The two programs listed below that you have are not as effective as Malware Bytes and SUPERantispyware. I uninstalled both from my machine a long time ago.

    • a-squared Free 4.0
    • Ad-Aware

    5) Delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

    6) Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop. We need it to to clean up remnants from AVG8 and Avast! And also to rid us of a couple malware files.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    7) Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from avenger.

    8) Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

That's better! I have my Internet connection back and so far no redirects when using Google. My software happily updates.

Some more logs for your perusal.

    Many, many thanks.

Glad to hear it :) Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
