Updating the driver of an unknown soundcard.

I have only the standard driver for my soundcard. I'd like to update it, but how do I identify it? I know I have a NVIDIA chipset, if that helps any.

In HWiNFO32, under audio, it reports "Audio Adapter: nVIDIA MCP61 - High Definition Audio Controller." Is this the soundcard, or something else?

it should be (only) the card adaptor.
    if not wrong..,
the card itselfs, sits on the card adaptor which is atached to the motherboard,
same as any other host adaptor.
you should have a driver to the chipset who comes with the motherboard CD,
if it isn't updated, try catching it at the vendor site.
if it isn't that old and the range between it to the sound card isn't sirious,
    it should work fine.
    about the sound card,
you should get its sirial number or name on it as if it wasn't identified by the O.S it won't be showed at any info software either.
you might want to take a look at device manager and scan for new hardware to see if it shows up,
either way, you'll have to get it a driver,
no baby is quiet unless his got something to suck. ;)

My sound is working fine, but there's nothing for recording Stereo Mix/Wave Out, which I'm hoping to get. I don't have the OEM CD.

The more info we have, the better I can help you out.

What is the make/model of your PC, so I can help you identify the motherboard. Often OEM mobos are in a "family", and with manufacturers like Dell, your ship date determines the chipset, etc.

I have a FOXCONN MCP61M05 (as the brandname), with Vista Home Basic. nVIDIA chipset. The mobo itself is the same as the brand-name, but I'm not sure exactly why. I don't think this even matters, but I have cheap-o Cyber Acoustic speakers with decent sound but they pop and squeal a lot.

From what I can see, you are going to have to pick up some third party freeware to do your recording.

The best freeware I could come up with was Audacity.

the nVIDIA MCP61 is an onboard audio device which comes with some manufactured motherboards as part of ir chipsets and is not a sound card,
if u'd like using it, you should get the Realtek ALC888 driver.
if you'll be folowing earlier steps, you'll might be able to get your sound card
    installed as well.
    G day..
