    "Good Morning to You"

I have a Dell Dimm2350 and 128MB to work with for right now. Its a friends pc and they have aol. I tried getting it to connect(modem only)by way of network configuration but it would go as far as the password and denied access saying wrong Name/Pswrd/Domain. I know everything was correct as I went there from my lap via wireless and logged right on.I was trying not to download their software as she has very little to work with as it is. I thought if I could get it to connect to the internet via her aol phone no#(that she pays for)and have her log on through FireFox to retrieve her aol mail. My question is How much and what if any, kind of effect would it have on her pc?

    Good morning back to you!

I believe the AOL dialer is a special animal to accommodate the AOL dial-in phone numbers. You wont be able to access AOL via dial-up unless you use their dialer. I believe there have been folks who have just used the AOL dialer without the AOL client to get into AOL and then use another browser (IE, FireFox) to browse the net and pick up their email from www.aol.com. I'll have to do a little research.

Thanks I appreciate the help. I tried a place, which did not work on this pc that
BlackPhoenix in software forum had told me about. I don't know if it was because it was only for the UK or if I did something wrong. Anyway Thanks in advance if you do find something.

I found this. It would appear that you can connect to the Internet with an AOL account by simply following these instructions. It says it will connect WITHOUT the bloated AOL application. I'm not an AOL person so I couldn't test it. Give it a try.

How do I connect with the AOL® Dialer? The easiest way to connect with the AOL® Dialer is to launch it from the taskbar located on the bottom of your computer screen.

    1. Locate the AOL system tray icon.
    2. Right -click on the icon, and then click Start AOL Dialer.

This will bring up the AOLDialer Sign On Window that prompts for your AOL Screen Name and Password for verification. The experience of signing on with the AOL Dialer is very similar to signing on with the AOLsoftware. When you connect in this manner, AOL displays another system tray icon to represent the AOL Dialer. From this point on, you may use that icon to interact with the AOL Dialer or change settings. The icon will stay in your system tray until you disconnect.
Once online, you are free to explore the Internet or use the connection in other ways. When you connect with the AOL Dialer and you have completed your online activity, you must explicitly disconnect from your dialer connection.

Ok . Why ,I don't know, but there used to be a tray icon and now none show. I have restarted and did a complete shut down and start up, Yet no icon. Therefore I went to the desk top icon AOL9.5 opened>tic connections>advance>dialer settings tab>default dialer>tic AOL dialer then saved. nothing showed on the task bar so I double clicked AOL9.5(desktop)to open and hit sign on.It connected the same way with the software.
How do I get the Icon back on the Task bar?
After making that change should I restart?
    Also after disconnecting I've lost(not showing)my AVG icon.Go figure?

I believe that it's one of the settings in AOL is to place it on the system tray.
