Okay I can try those steps... since I can use other programs to do the same... I always trim my startup down when I set up a system...I only keep the stuff I HAVE to have for my security ...

OK. As long as we keep it up - we'll get it in the end! :-D

I'm going over this thread again. Here's what I have so far:

    1. IE6 is a security problem and some of 3d party software don't make compatibility checks for it anymore. Could be a factor? Want to try IE8?

    2. Most memory optimizers actually slows down the computer. Could that be the case with your MemOptimizer inside Tune UP utilities 2007? What about uninstalling it and see what happens? Deactivate it, uninstall, search and delete remains?

    3. Check that you have all updates for your Embroidery Digitizing program. You said that it has caused problems before. Is it possible to have it installed on some USB device and only activate it when you need it? Have you ever uninstalled it, searched and deleted remains and tested your PC' behavior without it?

    4. What photo editing programs have you? Are they updated? Could they be the reason?

    5. What do you run Ad-Aware for? It lost it's edge years ago. MBAM and SAS is what you have nowadays for additional scannings. Same for Spybot. Not of much value anymore. Actually Ad-Aware have compatibility problems with McAfee's anti-malware programs. Not sure how it is with their SiteAdvisor. But try to uninstall both. WOT is better anyway. Link: http://majorgeeks.com/WOT_for_Internet_Explorer_d6047.html Deactivate them, uninstall, search and delete remains?

    6. This here is about troubleshooting Outlook Express. Could also be here the problem is located: http://support.microsoft.com/ph/2578

    Here is what I did..
Uninstalled Uniblue Registry booster... removed traces... shut down restart took 16 minutes with hangups
Uninstalled Spybot S& D shut down restart took 10 minutes
Uninstalled AdAware AND Site Advisor.. removed traces of all three.. FAST shutdown, start up took 9 minutes...

The Embroidery digitizing software has the latest updates for it and it has not given me any problems since I redid the system..before the MOBO was replaced. I use Photo Expression 6... it is limited and will sometimes freeze but not often...
Corel Suite 3X and Serif Draw X3 all the latest for those versions...they run fine

the Media Version of XP runs on my office computer...it has all but the IE8 and runs like a top... even uses memory hog Icredimail... so I expected more out of this one ...it has the standard OE... I had windows live and liked it...but that was before the first restore...was afraid I could not use it without the IE7... can I? chekcing out all you have sent with last post

the 3B I use is paid for not freeware...the freeware version does have spyware attached...the purchased does not... I looked that one up because it does work pretty good...but I can live without it...don't use it often...but I guarantee you removing it will not speed it up ... I didn't even install it on here till after I started getting the slow down...

Well, you should use IE8 now. Really. And go over Microsoft's trouble shooting site for Outlook Express.

Did you find out how to change permissions and have hidden files, folders, programs shown in "the yellow dog" search so that you could delete all of the remains from SiteAdvisor?

You still have way too many anti-malware programs installed. And you have the wrong ones. AdAware, SpyBot Search & Destroy, Asquared Hijack Free, Spyware Remover should go.

You should only run Avast! PC Tools firewall and have free MBAM and free SAS for extra scannings. Check that Windows firewall is disabled. :cool

If Net Objects Fusion V.8 and PrintMaster are freeware that can't run on your PC you should uninstall them. Freeware can always be reinstalled.

I'm beginning to understand why you have problems!

    1. Did you also uninstall Tune UP utilities 2007? I think you should. MemOptimizers often does the opposite: they slow the PC down.
    2. Only 2 registry cleaners in this world are good enough to be trusted, namely CCleaner and the one inside the free Microsoft online scanner OneCare. You should stop using all other but those 2. Don't even have them installed.

Latest, uninstalled Registry Repair Pro by 3B..all anti malware except the SAS and Malware bytes... even took off the Dell Media center as I do not use it... cleaned all traces from my system, cleaned up the start up and other stuff with CCleaner... still took 9 minutes to load my system all the way... I did not remove the Tune Up Utilities as I do not believe it is the problem... It too was not installed untill AFTER my slow down started in an attempt to get things going right...and it did help a little... I like it's other features too... so I really would like to hang on to that... I have it on all my other systems and it has never been a problem... I still believe it is Home Edition and the MOBO replacement combined... once things are ON...they work fine speed wise...but it is slow opening and slow starting... that is my problem...I have the TU on the other computers running in the background and automatically fix problems... but on this it is not in the start up...I only use when needed... I think that after all this uninstalling I should have seen a difference... and I believe the windows updates started it... so I think I am going to call it a night... I need some sleep and this thing has taken enough of mine for this day... will come in the morning hopefully refreshed and ready to boot its little behind into gear...but I think I will end up doing the system over... just have a little backing up to do...thank you very much for the time you have taken to try and help me reslove this...maybe I will have a brain storm in my sleep and "discover " something I missedd...like a light bulb moment...till then frustration.... :cry

Do you really need Yahoo's toolbar as well as Google's? Having both hanging in IE will slow you down so uninstalling one of them will benefit you. And remember to serach for remains with the yellow dog and delete them.

yahoo I use for my groups...but google I forgot once to NOT install it when I was puttin in something else...just never got around to taking it off...

it says I do not need to defrag, but I will anyway...let it run while I hit the sack... thank you... if you have anything else I can check tomorrow, I will check them out too... I really would like to know what is causing it...but *sigh* it is getting tedious... LOL... okay...I am off to catch my zzzzzzz thanks

  16. Cordialis

    Cordialis MajorGeek

OK. :-D If you defrag anyway remember to run this Microsoft tool also. It's done in 1 minute and a reboot. I'm not kidding: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897426.aspx

It's not much work to test that? Deactivate, uninstall, search and delete remains? :-D Reinstalls easily...

I hate to back track here, but did you ever check your event logs for errors?
Could you bring up task manager again and tell us if this "dmadmin.exe" is still running?
If it is, do not terminate it. But it should only be running when you're doing some kind of HDD management work such as adding or changing a partition. When you have finished your partition work it too should stop. See this: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/Services/Logical_Disk_Manager_Administrative_Service.htm at BlackViper.com. So if it is running, we need to find out why or what is causing it. Of course at that stage I'm stuck and I'm not even sure if it has anything to do with the long start-up problem.

Another question, when you ran SAS in safe mode, did it take the 9-10 minutes for the computer to boot up? Or was it a considerably less amount of time?

Cordialis is right, you'll be happier with WOT.

If you should get another BSOD you should check this thread: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35246 by Adrynalyne.

Ran defrag all night... then ran page defrag on boot this morning...the files were already in 1 fragment so nothing was done.
dmandmin.exe is in the processes but not running...I have never noticed it running when I access taskmanger. I have been searching out a process I saw called jgs.exe can find no use for it, and some searches show it is unsafe. either of you know what it is? I have been trying to find info on all the process I see to find out what is legit and what isn't.... have not installed WOT yet but will in a short here... the system is running smoother then before but still no fast boot... *sigh* why can't I have both?:confused

safe mode is a bit faster... but then I'm not loading all the fancy stuff either

I do not use the MSN instant messenger... so I need to take that out... how do I disable that process? and will it mess up my IE? it is not loaded to run on startup but is in the processes... I miss my Site Advisor... hard to tell sometimes if a site is safe to go to...:(

strike the jgs.exe I read it wrong...it is jqs and is a java file, supposedly does not run all the time

Let WOT do that. Give it a chance. SiteAdvisor is just 1 minute away. So give WOT a spin...

    Cordialis MajorGeek

Please tell me, that you really have searched and deleted the remains from SiteAdvisor? And that you used Search Companion (the one with the yellow dog) for the job - not some other desktop search program. You also had hidden files, folders, programs shown, right? And you did find out how to change permissions so that you could delete the hidden files and folders?

  22. littlebobbie

    littlebobbie Private First Class

I have my folder settings to always view hidden folders... so I can do an in depth search when something is amiss... I used the CCleaner for most of it...the yellow dog does not find any traces of the site advisor... or registry cleaner ( it was on MG recommendation that I even bought the Uniblue RC)... the only thing left of spybot s&d is the install file... if I have problems deleting I can always start it as administrator, but have not had to do that... I have not yet caught on to WOT and how it works..it is installed ... but not doing much surfing at the moment... I will put up with the long start up if I can get it to working all my programs right... I have an updated version of my webbuilder that I can't run because it flat out locks it up ...have to shut off the power to get it to start again..have not tried it lately... might get further with all the system tweaking going on..you rekon?... but anyway... I don't know what processes I can safely stop and not compromise my system... I can build a computer better then I can understand why it works at all...software is still greek to me... or geek..LOL

  23. Cordialis

    Cordialis MajorGeek

I'm afraid you lost me there. What webbuilder would that be? It is of cause fully updated and newly reinstalled since it's been causing trouble, my guess is?

How's it running without Tune UP utilities 2007?

  24. plastidust

    plastidust Command Sergeant Major

jgs.exe is part of Java Platform's developers kit. Supposedly you can terminate it. To see what services you can safely stop try:http://www.blackviper.com/ look under "Popular Content" and I believe for you the 4th link down under that.

I run Net Objects fusion v4 , I bought the V8 and when I tried to run that it froze the computer up...I have not tried it for a while now...I will delete and remove traces and reinstall fresh before I do... I just to make sure NOTHING will be a hinderance... I cannot get tech support as this V8 was just dropped for support right before I bought it...they are up to 10 or 11 by now... I can continue to use the V4 but I would like to upgrade..

  26. Cordialis

    Cordialis MajorGeek

Yes. Sounds right. Give that a try.

  27. littlebobbie

    littlebobbie Private First Class

Went to blackviper... opened up my services file and put a lot on manual and only disabled what I just do not use...too two minutes off the start up time... so that tells me that something in the processes COULD be a problem... but have not yet checked to make sure my digitizing program and webbuilder or web uploader will work with these settings... so I have to check those out before I go further...then I will work on the web builder upgrade to see if I can get that working... thank you guys for the help... will keep on plugging on...

Well glory, here I am again... okay... installed IE8...so far no major issues... uninstalled NetObjects Fusion V8... cleaned off all traces... checked out my digitizing program..check, works, atleast what I had time to check... NOF V4 works... WS_FTP uploader, loaded up normally... new install of NOF V8... started zip fast...THEN LOCKED UP THE WHOLE COMPUTER.... only this time it did it faster LOL ..... somethings just do not like this computer and I believe it is Home edition... that seems to be the version of XP that causes problems ... bummer... and here I thought I was getting somewhere...
think I will find a corner and just cry...:cry

  30. Cordialis

    Cordialis MajorGeek

So what you're saying is that something is incompatible with NOF V8? Did you rule out Tune UP utilities 2007 as the cause for this?

  31. Cordialis

    Cordialis MajorGeek

Do you have all the various .net things installed? Service Packs and all? Go to Microsoft Update and click the Custom button. NOT the Express button. Install what it suggests. Clicking the Custom button should check these .net things...

Also go to the homepage of NOF 8 and check the system requirements - especially software-wise.

  32. littlebobbie

    littlebobbie Private First Class

The TU is not in the start up and does not run in the processes or in anything...I only use it as a stand alone when I think I need it...I just checked the processes running and this is a fresh boot... and there is no sign of it running... I do not believe it to be an issue...I installed it on the computer AFTER I started having problems...the NOFv8 was already on here and had already froze up on me...Before the TU was put on the system... the NOFv8 is not compatible with this system as it is now... I have spent so much time diagnosing this that I believe I should give up and just do a fresh install of PRO... would save my hair:hammer I don't have much to spare... are there computer funny farms?roflmao

  33. littlebobbie

Have all the latest of windows updates available... have all the v8 updates as well... system surpasses requirements for this version of NOF...

I always do custom... the only thing I have not installed is IE7 and anything that was required there...but since now on IE8 that is not needed anyway...there are NO NetFramework for anything in my options available...only some about rootkits and an update for my hasp(dongle) and cryptographic service provider... I dowloaded them all...

Okay I will search for that... I had to take IE8 off..it was causing problems with my OE... which went back to working right when I removed it... I have decided that after I get my designs done and loaded for this month... I am going to start fresh and install XP Pro... I like it a whole lot better then this home edition... I am gritting my teeth... but I will save all the good installs I have so I do not have to download them again... weee... I am sick anyway so might as well play with my "toy" ..ha ha LOL

  43. Cordialis

    Cordialis MajorGeek

This is probably a very bad idea. It could just as easily be a 3d party program that's causing this. :cool A fresh, clean install through and through would be more recommendable, I think.

Anyway: good luck with the job. XP Pro will have more support from Microsoft so it's better for that reason alone. And better in general. Let us know how it went! :-D

  44. littlebobbie

    littlebobbie Private First Class

the 3rd party things I will save are the programs you guys have suggested to help keep me safe ... this particular machine is for my work so it does not need all the fancy stuff..only to run well... funny thing... since removing the IE8...it is faster... not on start up...but the operation... go figure that one...LOL

Here's another one for you to through in on that fresh install:
    SpywareBlaster 4.2: http://www.majorgeeks.com/SpywareBlaster_d2859.html
It doesn't use any resources other than a little hard drive space. Make sure and update it as soon as you install it, and once every couple of weeks there after.

Hope all goes smooth for you from here on out.

In case you haven't caught onto WOT yet, it's pretty straight forward - the coloured circles notify you of the average of four categories of rating and resting the mouse over a circle will expand it so you can see the individual rating for each category. The quickest way I know of to check a site using WOT is to google the site name and see what results you get; the circles will be against each result. The colours match traffic lights - green for go, red for stop and orange/yellow (choose your colour blind preference! :-D) is for caution. One thing to note is that a site could have green for everything except red for child safety and have an average of green, such as an adult's only site.

And you can always go to the online Site Advisor from MacAfee and type the site into the search bar:
    http://siteadvisor.com

For extra security if you are running Firefox (which I don't remember seeing mentioned so perhaps you are using IE) you can turn on some settings. Go to Tools and then Options and then the Security icon. Tick the top three entries.

WOT will also stop you from entering a site if the rating is bad enough. It covers the screen with a black and red warning and gives you the option of continuing or not.

In regards to your slowness problem, if you haven't got around to doing that wipe and install yet, have you tried running a system file check? I don't recall seeing that mentioned anywhere in the thread and it could be worth it.

    1. Click on Start and then Run.
    2. Type this into the text box:
    sfc /scannow

(That's a space between c and / and none anywhere else. Make sure you get the double 'n'.)

    3. Click OK.

Your XP disk might be asked for so have it handy. Could be really quick or could take up to an hour but at the end, all the system files should be in good shape.

Also, Dial-a-fix has been suggested to people as a wonder cure for all sorts of issues. I believe you just tell it to fix all and set it running.
    http://majorgeeks.com/download4899.html

And Kelly's Korner is a good spot for XP cures:

Hope you haven't installed yet and that fixes your problem and saves you some time. :)

I sure wish you had written yesterday... LOL..... I just got back up... changed OS to Pro/Media addition... for some reason neither of my XP Pro disks would install, one would give me the blue screen of death and the other would not copy over all the files needed so would not run...both disks like new condition...so I got my dell restore disks for my other computer I run and it worked!... updates and all... but anyway it is running fast but the Fusion 8 still locks it up so I wrote to the vendor as this time it said there was a corrupt file... don't know if they will fix that or not... but anyway... that is as it stands...right now it is running pretty good and knock on wood, hopefully it will stay that way... would be nice if it did..so here is fingers crossed that my problems will be few...BUT I will remember this for future reference...maybe closer then I know...:)

I like WOT.... neat.... down to the line on getting everything back on... got a couple controllers I don't seem to need YET that I need to find the drivers for... so I can get rid of the error message when i start... do not have IE 7 or 8 yet... not in a hurry... hopefully I will back in full operation this weekend... about time to... I am way behind on my designs... not good for business... thank you to EVERYONE for the help on this... with all the fine free programs you have steered me to, I am hoping to keep this thing running smoothly... next project... rebuild a DELL desk top to keep in another room running with a dedicated email address to send my designs to, just in case my external does a nose dive on me... I have burned quite a few on disk, but my disks have been known to not open sometimes... I get paranoid...but have too much time invested to risk it to chance... or one computer doing what it should...

    again thanks to everyone...:wave
