Celibratory drinks. Any ideas?

Well, in a little less than a month, I get the thrill of reviving my thread of when I quit smoking. Last year, I drank a really nice Bordeaux by a bonfire. This year, instead of wine, I am thinking whiskey. My friend who I will be with that night does not appreciate wine, so I was the only drinker of the wine that night. But he does drink Crown Royal. So why not buy an Irish Whiskey?

Now I am not a big whiskey drinker, have had Crown, Crown Reserve, and Crown Cask 16. So what is the best way to drink it? Neat? On ice? I am thinking about a bottle of Redbreast Irish Whiskey. It comes highly recommended to me for the price/value.

Any Irish Whiskey experts in here? Wish I could afford the Midleton, but no. :-D

i've had black bushmill's...it's a little harsh, but oh so good...my personal fav's, not irish, but all-american:
    Jack Daniel's Single Barrel
I had some sort of special version of Knob Creek that was really good too.

they say that a little water with your whiskey brings out "aromas" that you don't get when drinking it straight.

I like Jamieson's Irish Whiskey, although it is only a rare treat for me. They have the normal stuff, plus 12 year old and Jamieson Gold here in OZ. Jamieson Gold is to die for but is AUD$90 a bottle here in OZ (if you can find it) :cry

Try any variety of Jamieson Gold. A great drop, IMO.

Congrats on keeping the evil weed at bay. :-D LOL

You might want to take up smoking again, I think lungs are easier to fix then livers. ;)

I drink scotch, not Irish, so you might not want my recommendations. But you'll get them anyway!

Bowmore and Talisker are good, so is Cutty Sark and Glenlivet. Johnny Walker, of course, and if you like blended ones Ballantine and Chivas Regal are my two favorites.

Oh, and the smoking gun is right--always water your whisky :wine <-- birthday Glenlivet

How are you doing Fred? Don't see you very often. Hope your good :)

And as for the drinking, I was just yanking his chain. LOL

I have learned Fred G is very serious about his social drinking and have been quiet about it.
As for me I am doing and thats it. Cancer is still in remission and has been for 2 years and COPD is slowly taking its toll. But as James Brown would say "I feel good".
If I was a drinking man I would try some of them fancy little bottles of fruity drinks. Can't think of what they are called.

I've heard somewhere that Hornsby's crisp apple is particularly good. :-D

Well, I don't drink any of those...I prefer vodka, wine, or beer.

But I will say congrats early. :)

This is hard for me to pick. I will buy a bottle of something to celebrate with. My friend does not like wine, and of course would most likely not like Port. I drink wine and beer.

I might just have to stop by the pub down the road and try a couple of them. One drink only of course, I am driving. I know they have Clontarf, if I don't like that, I should probably stick to the wine... My friend can drink his cheap lager. :-D

Woodchuck for cider. They can keep that Hornsby's swill for the tourists! :-D

Single malt Scotch on ice would be my first choice, (Glenfiddich, Glenliviet maybe). The ice, both cools the good stuff and realeses a small amount of water to release the full flavours.;) If you want Irish, there are a few good ones, Jameson is pretty good as is Old Mill.

abz1nthe, I am not a big fan of Crown. The Cask 16 Crown stuff is pretty good. That is a Canadian Whiskey... I am boycotting Canada until my takeover. :-D

@ Gensu, yes, the health benefits are great, plus, heck around here cigs are almost $6 a pack! Suckers. :-D

I am narrowing my search to pretty much Irish Whiskey. Red Breast or Clontarf are my most likely choices.

Bit of a thread revival, I have not been here much lately. It is decided though. I bought a Ferreira 1995 Vintage Porto for my little celebration Sunday. I recently started drinking some Rum, the hard stuff seems to be a bit of an aquired taste. Perhaps Scotch next year. :-D

My husband gave me an 18-year old Glenlivet for my birthday. It is highly recommended. :wine

Good to see you still lurking, Fred.
Now one spirit (and I detest spirits) I do like is a wee dram of rum.

And I like a nip of this now and again. :yum

Pre-Event-Capillary. is the best way to celebrate. As you get into bed prior to your celebratory event, remove the cork from the desired beverage and insert your thumb into the neck of the bottle. Next morning you will have a head start

I have not had any alcohol for almost 6 years (i hope that does not disqualify me) but i have memories of Jamesons Irish and Glenfiddich being my favourite.

I do not believe anyone could mention Cutty Sark as being a nice drink, paint stripper maybe!
