This started Saturday evening. I don't recall visiting any new sites or installing any new programs. My avast sounds it's alarm and a popup shows in the system tray saying a problem is found. Example:

    file name: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ati64si.sys\[Embedded_Ix#19b0]
    malware name: Win32:Cutwail [Trj]
    vps version: 090425-0, 04/25/2009
    ----and----
    file name: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ws2_32sik.sys\[Embedded_Ix#19b0]
    malware name: Win32:Cutwail [Trj]
    vps version: 090425-0, 04/25/2009

This would happen every half hour or so it seemed. The avast advice was always "move to chest" which I did. I didn't see any noticeable problems with my pc besides the avast warnings, and the mail scanner icon in system tray never went away. When I hover over it read:
    avast! mail scanner [svchost.exe->hosted-by.leaseweb.com]

I also noticed this kept putting itself back into startup after being disabled and deleted through ccleaner. (My pc user name is Public)
    C:\Documents and Settings\Public\Public.exe /i

I ran SUPERAntiSpyware/Spybot/MalwareBytes. Problems were found and fixed but returned immediately.

**After completing read and run me, avast! mail scanner occasionally pops up in system tray. Which normally I only recall seeing when I opened outlook express, here are a couple of ex:
    avast! mail scanner [svchost.exe->health.moph.go.th, 77.221....
    avast! mail scanner [svchost.exe->mx5.messagingengine.com...
However, now the icon has goes away instead of remaining in the system tray so that's not exactly what it says, but close.

As I'm writing this post I received 2 more avast warnings, ex:

    file name: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\netsik.sys\[Embedded_Ix#19b0]
    malware name: Win32:Cutwail [Trj]
    vps version: 090426-0, 04/26/2009
Advice was move to chest - did it. I attached the logs, hope I did this stuff correctly.

    Thanks in advance.
    Teresa

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You are way out of date with your version of SUPERAntiSpyware.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this new log.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 10

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the new SUPERAntiSpyware log
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Everything seems to be working fine. I haven't had any new warnings via Avast since the morning I posted here, the 27th.
    New logs are attached.
1 more question - I update SUPERAntiSpyware weekly. Do you know why it would have been outdated?
Thank you so much for your time.
    Teresa

Yes! That update only changes the Core and Trace databases. It does not update the program version number. Thus when the main program changes, you need to uninstall and then reinstall the new version. Then you click the Update button again to make sure the database gets updated. You should check for program updates periodically at the link I gave you because it will not tell you about them automatically.

Your last MGtools log was not fully updated. Please delete the current MGlogs.zip file. When we finish running the below, I will ask for a new scan. Make sure you let it finish running.

Now that we have the main parts of you infection removed, a couple other hidden entries have showed themselves and we need to remove them.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I don't have any problems with my pc that I can see, and I haven't had any new Avast warnings.
Thank you so much for your time. I truly do appreciate your help, I guess the remnants of this infection would have just remained on my pc if not for your assistance.
Thanks also for the info about SAS, I'll be sure to check for program updates now.
    Requested logs are attached.
    Thank so much, Teresa

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
