Any current favorite utility apps in the following categories (freeware??):
    Defragmenter
    Anti Vrius
    General optimizer/performance booster.

Right now my system is getting really sluggish although I daily use Avanquest System Suite 8.

    All thoughts most appreciated.

Yes, Diskkeeper has a free version, available here at MajorGeeks. My personal favorite is QuickSys Defrag which is also free. I also like Auslogics Defrag, it's also free, and both are right here at Major Geeks. For antivirus, I use Avira's AntiVir Personal. It offers excellent real-time FREE protection, with top notch detection and removal features, daily automatic updates, the works. I don't use a system booster. I don't really believe in 'em. As long as you do regular maintenance (clean junk files, cookies, temp files; defrag; etc), and have decent modern hardware, your PC should pretty much always run nice and fast.

Personally,I use Avira AntiVir(free) and Ultimate Defrag( free domain version).
Both do all that is required of them.

    +1 for Avira Antivirus
I use IOBit SmartDefrag as a defragmenter. It runs in real time in the background defragmenting frequently used files, and it can fast- and deep-optimise your files, which is a defragmentation routine designed to move files on the hard drive so they are easier to access.

Best freeware AV for me is the Avast Free edition. Excellent protection, light on resources, daily updates etc. I really like this one because it works without any bugs.

Previously I used to run AVG 8 free, but in retrospect it seems to have been quite buggy (especially wrt updates), gave false alarms and was not light on resources unlike the previous 7.x editions.

I 've heard good things about Antivir too, but due to a bad experience with it a few years ago, I've not used it in the recent past, so I don't know how well the current version performs.

For the defragger, my favorite has always been Diskeeper, and currently Diskeeper 2009 Pro. But it's not free, since it's commercial software. For a free defragger, I recommend the built-in Windows defrag (especially if on Vista) since it's safe and works reasonably well for basic requirements.

I my self like Avira as well. Love Advanced System Care it has the defragger and a few other nice tools. I use it all the time.

With advanced system care I use it on windows Xp. Not sure how well it works on vista. You may wanna ask around before using with vista. Like so many others I dont use vista.

I currently been using AVG 8.5 for my anti virus and iobit's smart defrag for a defragmenter but I do use other programs such as spybot S&D and Mcafee Site Advisor which tells you what websites are good and bad.

    Hope this helps

UltimateDefrag is an amazing defrag app. For AV I prefer NOD32.

Sorta becoming my standard reply on these questions: :zzz :-o :-D

I use Spyware Terminator with the Real-Time Shield enabled, SpyBot mainly for the immunization feature (It's great for your host file protection and can replace Spyware Blaster), MalwareBytes for weekly scanning, and I use Avast! for anti-virus needs. I also disable activeX in IE, install IE7Pro, and use mainly Firefox with AdBlock Plus and Download Statusbar (with it, I can easily have everything I download scanned by Avast!). And Windows Firewall is more than enough with a hardwire router between your computer and the modem.

For defragging, I've been using Defraggler with no ill effects for over a year now.
