    Hey MajorGeeks!

Last night while Internet surfing, everything appeared normal until the computer slowed down and nearly crashed. The Jetico Personal Firewall absolutely crashed while the computer remained slow. An ad alerting me to a "possible malware infection" :p prompted the option to scan. I terminated this window through Task Manager. Then I shut everything down.

I re-booted in Safe Mode, followed the instructions in the READ & RUN ME, and commenced the Windows XP Cleaning Procedure. The results:

SUPERAntiSpyware - Scanned full system, it found many infections, deleted all, but prompted a re-boot to complete removal. I complied.

Two attempts to re-boot in Safe Mode were unsuccessful. Two errors, the first attempt with locating some missing image file and the second attempt detecting the keyboard, were cited. I re-booted in Safe Mode with Networking successfully.

SpyBot - Search & Destroy - Prompted me to remove about 150 temporary files prior to scanning. I selected OK, but I got a message that these files were in use and could not be deleted. I continued to Scan full system in Safe Mode with Networking, it found two Virtumonde and Smitfraud-C infections, and deleted all.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Quick system scan, found many Virtumonde and Smitfraud-C infections, deleted them.

I attempted to and successfully re-booted into Safe Mode.

MGtools.exe - Ran this tool, zip logs attached.

    Successfully re-booted into Normal Mode.

combofix.exe - Scanned full system in Normal Mode, it found at least one Virtumonde and Smitfraud-C infection and deleted it.

Being that every scanning tool detected rogue elements, this is by far the largest Virtumonde infection I have had :mad It appears the infection has been removed, but I would very much appreciate your professional opinion. The Computer appears to be running normally now :)

I have attached the necessary scan logs. Please review these logs when you can and let me know if the infection has been successfully eradicated, and if there is anything else I should know about the infection or this issue. I am particularly worried that my real-time AV and Firewall did not seem to prevent this. Unfortunately, this Firewall often prompts me to allow "attackers" but does not adequately explain the "attack" and will not cease the requests until I comply. Thank you very much for helping me out with this issue.

Here is the ComboFix Log. This was the final tool I used. This was performed in Normal Mode. The scan took under ten minutes and apparently deleted at least one file. Thank you so much again for your assistance.

    Update on "Huge Virtumonde Infection":

While I have not experienced any of the apparent Virtumonde symptoms since the clean-up procedure, there has been excessive System Idle Process (92% - 99%) usage during the past two days that slows things down to a near grinding halt. This occurs mainly while using a browser and not so much while the computer runs idle.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    First a few comments.
    • you are not supposed to be running the cleaning procedure in safe boot mode. We want you to run it in normal boot mode unless that is not possible. Your logs are not as useful when obtained in safe mode because many things could be missing that would only show in normal boot mode.
    • you did not update to the current version of SUPERAntiSpyware. You are running and old version and need to uninstall it and then download and install the current version. This is necessary to get the proper program version. Then you also need to update the database during the installation. Do this and run a new scan and attach this log.
    • you did not download and use the current version of MGtools. You are severely out of date. I will have you update this during my instructions further down.
    • Even worse then all of the above, you are using a severely outdated version of Windows XP. You only have SP1 and are very susceptible to hundreds of infections including Conficker (do a Google on this an you will see why you need to update).
You are reading this incorrectly. System Idle Process is not really a process. It is actually the idle time your processor has. That means the time spent not doing anything and 92-99% is normal and expected.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 This was discontinued long ago. SUPERAntiSpyware is much much better anyway.
    Java(TM) 6 Update 11

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Also delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jonathan Kendall\Local Settings\temp\

Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hey Chaslang!
Thank you for looking into this issue and for your help. I'll respond to the comments you made:

    1. I thought the reverse was true, that more malware elements could be detected in Safe Mode, which is why I performed the scans in this mode. I'll perform the cleaning procedure in Normal Mode from now on.
    2. I have now uninstalled, reinstalled, and updated SUPERAntiSpyware.
    3. I have now uninstalled and reinstalled MGtools.
    4. I understand this is a security risk. I want to upgrade the OS to XP SP2, but when I tried this once before, upon re-boot the computer's logo read "Windows XP". I am running Windows XP Professional, and I was not sure if the upgrade actually downgraded my version. I want to retain the "Professional" elements to the OS. Also, besides the improved security, what else does the upgrade change? I'm not too certain about this, so please excuse my ignorance about this, and I certainly appreciate all guidance you can provide.

Thank you for explaining the System Idle Process.

I installed and ran Disable/Remove Windows Messenger and have removed Windows Messenger.

I uninstalled Java(TM) 6 Update 11, but ran into a problem installing the current version. I got the BSOD citing Driver_irql_not_less_or_equal.

The computer seems to be running well otherwise :) The requested scan logs are attached. Please review these when you can. Thank you, Chaslang, for your assistance.

No! You can sometimes (not always) just remove things that cannot be removed in normal boot mode by using safe mode. However our procedures rarely require use of safe boot due to the tools we use.

If you are referring to the mostly black screen seen for awhile when booting up then it only says Windows XP at that point. After booing up if you right click on My Computer and select Properties, you will see which version of Windows and which service pack level.

I cannot give you a full list of all the features that have changed. You could inquire in the Software Forum, but SP2 alone gets you the Windows Security Center and their poor firewall but it is better than no firewall at all. There are hundreds of security updates you are missing and you are severely at risk. In addition, some software now even requires a minimum of SP2 to even work. Here is one quote from Microsoft about SP 2:

You will have to discuss this in the Software Forum. Make sure that you give the full word for word error message. But do the below since it is Java related.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: Java(tm) Plug-In 2 SSV Helper - {DBC80044-A445-435b-BC74-9C25C1C588A9} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jp2ssv.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Delete the below folder if it exists:
    C:\Program Files\Java

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hey Chaslang :major

Thank you for helping me through this spyware issue. After the re-boot following my last posting on this thread, I was able to download the latest version of Java directly from their site. MajorGeeks members on the Software Forum were very helpful in answering my questions and allaying my concerns about upgrading the OS to SP2, so I will be making this upgrade as soon as possible. The computer is running normal once again :)

Thank you again for all of your help!
