    What brand and model of router are you using? Is the Vista computer wired or wireless?
    DHCP is what the router does when it hands out addresses to the computers.
    If I understand, you have one computer with XP and Vista on it. XP can get an address and go on the internet, Vista can not. First thing I always check when a computer can't get on the internet is the firewall. Find Vista's firewall and make sure it is not blocking any "talking" between the computer and the router.

    Most internet connection problems can be easily solved by using the Command Prompt. Both XP and Vista have this feature.

    Go to your Control Panel, and select this command.

    First type: ipconfig/release

    This will set up your IP address so it can connect.

    Then type: ipconfig/renew

    This will renew your IP address, which should help you to connect to the internet. Vista, as well as XP, should come with a program that will aid you with connecting, but both should connect you automatically through your "Found New Hardware" function, no matter what modem or router type you have.

    If you use the Command Prompt (as instructed above), and you still cannot connect, there might be a problem with your service. When you type "ipconfig/renew," and the line that says "DNS Suffix" is blank, that means there is a problem with your service provider. The DNS Suffix is what allows you to connect through your service.

    Most providers should provide telephone help for any further problems.

    Good luck.

    P.S.

    I do hope that both operating systems are on different hard drives and/or partitions or are on two different computers. The two are probably conflicting if they aren't separate or on two different computers.

    Having both XP and Vista on the same system is entirely unnecessary and ill-advised. Unless you have separate partitions and/or hard drives set up to where both are separate, having both is not wise.

    Some use two different OSes, but one or the other is usually a different kind, such as Linux.

    Before proceeding, correct this problem, should it be happening. Having two OSes creates a number of issues a lot of the time.

    Morning - well, I have my 250 G HDD partitioned - Win XP Pro on one partition and vista on another partition with a 3rd partition open. I have a Realtek RTL8168B/811B Family PCI-E gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0).

    We did all that the other posts mentioned and for whatever reason the LAN was not recognized. Consequently, I was at a loss and even going to a vista forum I could not find a solution.

    Needless to say, I am in computer lab right now and turned on my computer and logged onto Vista and guess what???? I am on the internet. Apparently there is a problem with one of the updates in Vista and I do not know which one it is.....

    I just received a pop-up telling me that vista is doing updates.....so we shall see if I lose internet again.

    Thanks for all the replies to my posts......I will let you know if the problem happens again......KathyM

    That's weird, because it won't work with the space on mine. LOL

    Apparently what I was able to find out about the problem is a.NET update. It happened to me again (no internet access) so what I did was - reinstalled Vista along with the necessary drivers and it is working like a champ. Time will tell if it gets wacky again. Thanks everyone!!

    Is it the 3.5 patch? If so, you might want to turn off auto-updates or it will get pushed to you again.

    :mad I am pulling my hair out!!

    This Vista thing is driving me crazy....I can't get internet access again. It is showing that I have "local only" access. There is nothing out of the ordinary that I can see in taskmanager and with the firewall I can't get it to change to "private" it keeps defaulting back to "public". I am not on wireless nor am I on a network (no sharing this puter) :)

    I did disable IPv6 but when I go into the cmd prompt and do ipconfig it is only showing 169.254.141.79 with subnet mask 255.255.0.0 and no default gateway.

    I did have the students and instructor look at this and they couldn't figure it out. I have tried to change the firewall to add port 80 but it won't.....what am I missing?????

    Hi Kathy

    Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and see if connect to net?

    Which Firewall is it the built in one or a 3rd party one and if so what one?

    Try resetting the Network to private in Network and Sharing Centre, click Customize, then check the firewalls setting again,

    Hi - I did the M$ kb and didn't work. I am going to have to shelf this as I am preparing for taking my network+ exam next Wednesday. Thanks for all your help and I will revisit this after my test. :)

    Somebody at the office I work at had a similar problem to yours. After looking around the internet for awhile I found a guide to fix this issue. I used it on my co-worker's laptop and his laptop was able to accept an IP address from the router. I fixed it today, so I know it works for our router at least, but have yet to test it elsewhere.

    I got it from this site http://www.reviewingit.com/index.php/content/view/29/2/

    If for some reason you have issues connecting to the site or are just lazy heres the instructions also the site has a program that auto-fixes the registry if you are uncomfortable messing with it.

    "Registry Tweaks for Vista DHCP Problems

    HKLM\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\TCPIP\PARAMETERS\INTERFACES\{GUID}

    Change
    DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag = 0

    ADD DWORD
    DhcpConnDisableBcastFlagToggle = 1

    Also to disable IP V6

    HKLM\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\TCPIP6\PARAMETERS\

    ADD DWORD
    DisabledComponents = FF (hex)
    "

    Hopfully im not too late in posting to help you lol

    Hi there - thank you so much for trying to help. I have done this and it did not work. I have been unable to find the solution to this problem so therefore what I think I am going to do is uninstall and reinstall. Right now I just do not have the time to futz with it as it is on my 2nd partition.

    Again, I appreciate the time that you took to write as well as sending me the link. Take care.....KathyM

    We had this problem with one of our laptops. I reset the router, and it worked. I'm not sure why this worked; we have 3 laptops, and only one of them had this problem.
