I am running Spy Sweeper as my main anti-malware program, and a few weeks ago, it started blocking access to certain sites almost continuously. Sites like: Here4search.com, nellyslyrics.com, MSAntispyware2009.com, Begin2Search.com, Topsites.us, and many, many more. It does this even when I have no browser open. My Internet connection shows activity even when I'm not browsing or downloading anything or otherwise doing anything at all.

Spy Sweeper, Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware, Windows Defender, and Symantec Antivirus all turned up nothing. I ran chaslang's Malware Removal Guide (CCleaner found and removed almost 1GB of junk!!!); Anti-Malware and SuperAntiSpyare found a few things the others didn't, but removing them (with system restore off) did not solve my problem.

I am attaching the four required logs (I re-scanned with Malwarebytes after I got rid of the original findings, so that's why there's nothing in that log). Hopefully a solution is available. Thanks for taking a look.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

That is what it is supposed to do when you enable the feature to add items to your Hosts file to protect you from bad sites. See your C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file. You actually have more than a dozen backups there too from either Spybot or Spy Sweeper.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say. If no browser is open than what is being blocked.

    What are you looking at?

What are you using for a firewall?

SUPERAntiSpyware broke your Diablo II game when it incorrectly deleted some items for this. Run SUPERAntiSpyware and select Manage Quarantine. Find those items in the list and select them. Then click the Restore... button.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I've looked at my hosts file, and it appears that the only things in there have been added by Spybot. But the issue is I'm getting the blocked access SpySweeper pop ups even when I'm not browsing/accessing anything at all.

    That's what I want to find out . . . :)

Seems like something is trying to access these sites, but SpySweeper is blocking it. However, no programs have been able to find out what the something is.

Local Area Connection icon that runs in the system tray. If I double-click that it opens and shows activity that is occurring. SpySweeper's "blocked access to insertrandomwebsitenamehere.com" occurs as my internet connection shows activity, even though no browser windows are open and I'm not downloading/updating anything. If I disable my connection the messages stop. As soon as I re-enable the connection, they nearly always start right back up again. The blocked access messages do not always occur when I'm connected, but they have always returned after a short absence (usually a matter of hours, not days) over the past 3-4 weeks.

    Windows firewall. :-o

I suspected as much . . . haven't played it in awhile anyway . . . but from now on I shall think of them as merely "KindaSuperAntiSpyware."

Done. Not sure if I closed SpySweeper in time . . . started ComboFix, and then remembered to shut 'er down. ComboFix ran fine though. Hopefully the log is still OK (?).

    Done . . .

    . . . and done!

BTW, not having the blocked access messages today (before or after I ran above actions), but they were occurring yesterday.

Which is one reason why you need to install a real firewall. The Windows firewall is not adequate and provides no outgoing protection either. Install the below now:

PC Tools Firewall Plus <-- make sure you uncheck the options to install Google Toolbar and Threatfire free edition. There's is no sense in installing excess baggage.

If you have a broadband connection, you do have to realize that there is always some activity on your connection as soon as you boot up. And if any programs, including Windows, are doing automatic updates then there will be lots of activity. You even have an update service from Intuit always running. A browser does not need to be open to have activity.

I also don't recommend using the PopCap Games stuff you just installed on 5/11.

I also recommend that you uninstall Ad-Aware's Ad-watch if you are going to use Spy Sweeper.

What is the below folder from?
    Code:
    2009-05-09 16:25 . 2004-06-29 17:04 c:\program files\IE Security Measures
    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Ok, thanks.

Yes, I know. But this has been exclusive of any other updates -- things are set to ask/tell me when they are updating. And it was nearly constant. However, since my last post I have not had the problem at all. Something must have worked, I guess.

I'd noticed that Intuit item before, and I can't for the life of me figure how to turn it off. I hate programs that feel they have to install background stuff that runs all the time. iTunes is the worst.

You would deprive me of Plants vs. Zombies!?!? :-D

Ok. I had installed Ad-Aware as one of my many attempts to figure out what the issue was.

That is my all-purpose folder for malware programs (that don't have to be installed in a specific location).

    Thanks for taking a look!
