Here's the link http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1328698#post1328698 From the Virus section. I scanned, I cleaned, I still got a poopy machine. I have issues with slowness. In that thread is two things.

    1. Guy said I needed more RAM? - what I want to know is can you guys tell me just by that thread alone if I need new RAM or anything else to make the computer faster? Or would I need to run some more test of some sort?

    2. Those two files he said to remove manually I couldn't It said I couldn't when I tried to.

I Have Dell Dimension 4700 - Windows XP - Fast Internet - Using FireFox

The best way to speed up the system is to add RAM.

Good way to check is to measure how much the pagefile/swapfile/virtual memory is being used. If it's used a lot, try adding more RAM -- depending on where you can get it, it's well worth the money to upgrade rather than replace. How exactly to do that -- can't quite remember. Somebody here should know.

The two files? There's a little program called Unlocker which should get rid of them. Unlocker.. I think it's also on the MG site somewehere.

http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ I went to that site downloaded the top unlocker one - then It added some gay ebay shortcut and so I went to start - all programs - unlocker - scrolled over to the little wand looking icon with unlocker assist and Keep clicking and no opening. But the ebay icon opens up to the ebay site nicely.

silas, whenever you install a program, do not let it do the default always select custom. Sadly too many programs now adays come bundled with crap ware. The only way to see exactly what will be installed is to always select custom and unmark all those things you do not want.

Don't let the dire warnings "this should only be done by advanced users" scare you. They don't want you to unselect the crap ware so they'll try to scare you into not looking and installing everything.

256MB is definitely too little for XP.Double that to 512MB or even better to 1GB for the best running of that OS. Running even a few ptograms like some browsers,AV and antispyware programs will eat 256MB and hunt for more.

I mess around with the unlocker program and I believe I deleted them with success. There gone and my computer restarted, so atleast I didn't mess it up. Thanks for helping with unlocker.

As mentioned, 256 RAM is way too little for Windows XP. Add some other software programs and there you are .... stuck with a slow machine. 512 MB is the absolute minimum required.

I have a Dell Dimension 4600i and it came with 512 MB RAM (2x256 MB). I added 2x1GB of RAM and it made a definite difference. Remember to scan wilth Crucial and also if adding more RAM, install them in identical pairs. (either 2 or 4 sticks) Jot down the exact specs to go shopping as you don't need to purchase from Crucial. You may find the RAM cheaper elsewhere such as on newegg.com Prices have gone down a lot for RAM.

PS: guess it will be difficult to find a stick of 256 RAM nowadays.

You can scan AND use the Memory Advisor Tool. I don't know whether you have Dimension 4700 Series, 4700C or 4700 Media Center.

Click on the + boxes that will come up to expand and get all the info you need from there.

I went to that crucial website. Downloaded it, scanned it, then I copied and paste the site to program and saved then uploaded. So if you guys can open it and view and tell me any info would be nice. Also If I add RAM myself. And it messes up, I have to have a new xp disk to reinstall? And if I do have to reinstall then do I take out new RAM and install with normal RAM or have the new RAM in with the reinstall? It would be the same guy that have/fix/ suppose to be reinstall it... last time.

For $32 I'd opt for 2x1Gb sticks, installation is quite easy, Crucial RAM is packaged with a good instructional leaflet, follow it closely, you'll be fine :)

You can add both the new sticks alongside your original (there may be a tiny speed advantage to using just the 2 new sticks but it's not noticeable in the real world).

Now my system doesn't start up properly. Like I had an issue, ran the scans here tried to restart and it Wouldn't boot. So I had to get someone with a disk (who said they would re install windows xp) but I got people telling me it was just a fix. So then when I restarted It come to can not find diskette... or something like that on black screen.. So Id had someone tell me to go into.. blah blah disable some thing. So now when it loads it comes to black screen and says press blah or blah then it starts up. I am affraid if I add RAM that something may mess up due to ghetto starting. With adding RAM is it like where you need stuff to downloaded when you imput the new sticks of RAM? Or is it like a program you install.. you put disk in or something then in bottom right(you got new hardware ) double click and install from that?

    Is it this easy? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLPuhVR1X5E

Also I had a thread about a buying Windows XP disk and I was wondering if I bought one with sp3 on it. That it would "install and fix everything to like it was brand new"? Because I never installed a disk before I always had friend reformat. SO I was wondering what problems I could run into or what not

And If I reinstalled/formated with new disk it would"fix all the problems(like my loading up the computer and all the "brains" of it)? I just didn't know if reinstalling would mess it up.

So instead of buying a Windows XP SP3 thing off ebay, Id just go get the disk? The person that did it last time (I am sure has the disk and thats what he did my reinstall/fix freak up) with... But maybe I can do a real install. And yes I plan on buying RAM. I just didn't know if it was that simple as in the movie link? Or the others where I see people going into special pages and doing stuff.
