    Hello,

Has anyone ever used this program to delete files on your computer or external hard drivers etc?
It looks as if it is not for writing zeros to your entire hard drive, but for securely deleting files.

    Free Wipe Wizard

I checked out the site on McAffee's siteadvisor.

I do not have a way of proving how secure the data is wiped - if any of you
super knowledgable guys/gals out there would know how to test it or have used it please let me know.

    Thanks,
    ;)

McAfee SiteAdvisor might not be the best site to trust for ratings. They rated the site that loaded malware (antivirus 2009) as safe! Some of their ratings are as much as 12 months out of date.

I've never used the program you asked about because I use two others that work well for me.
I use DBAB when I want to zero out a drive and Eraser when I want to overwrite files, directories or free space. It will overwrite 1, 3, 7, or 35 times.

I've used eraser in the past two weeks to erase directories from my external hard drive.

Thanks plodr and evilfantasy for your replies.
    I will try Eraser.

I would hope that siteadvisor may be somewhat helpful - as opposed to nothing.

Any other recommendation of such service as for advising on bad / good downloads?

Sorry for the late reply - did not keep watch for a few days.

SiteAdvisor in my opinion has become increasingly unreliable. Known bad sites are given green ratings and so on.

I suggest WOT. It's much more accurate. Works with Firefox and IE. http://www.mywot.com

WOT for Firefox and/or IE. http://www.mywot.com/ Click on download, you will then get to choose which version you want to download, perhaps both if you're using both browsers.

    Hi

Not used Free Wipe Wizard, but do have to secure erase the contents of a folder and USB pen that may at times hold sensitive and NDA data on for my work or other test stuff, the application I do tend to use is Eraser as mentioned above as it does a good job of allowing you to build up a list of default tasks.

However I noticed you also like CCleaner and recomend it but did you also know that it can secure erase too? doesnt have as many erase routines as Eraser but covers the most common and best used ones Gutmann (35pass is kinda overkill IMHO unless you are hiding from the folk with Blackhawks) but the DOD 3 and 7 pass ones are fine for everyday usage and I did a test with 4 different file recovery apps and not one recovered the files I had erased using DOD 5220.22M (3 Pass)

To set CCleaner to defaultly wipe files that you generally clean in the temps etc and any custom folders or manually added files you have added, goto in CCleaner Options > Settings and under Secure Deletion are the options, just a neat option in Ccleaner (just a pitty CCleaner doesnt yet do the root of a USB pen)

    Thanks Halo.

I have never used the Secure Erase feature of CCleaner.
We live and learn - thanks to the knowledgeable people in forums - like this one -
and when we put our heads together - we are better off.

I like the Cleaner feature of - Eraser - being able to wipe USB pen drives.

Sorry, I misspelled, it is DBAN and the link is http://majorgeeks.com/Dariks_Boot_and_Nuke_d4596.html
according to the specs is says all versions of windows. You use a boot floppy or boot CD. Start the computer with that and it will zero out the hd. Eraser uses the DBAN technology so it is okay to just use DBAN if you want to wipe out an entire hd. You do not need to run both.
Eraser is handy to wipe (zero out) individual files or empty space which might have fragments of files on the "free space" part of the hd from defragging.

That I don't know. What I do with my flash drives is move the files off the flash drive onto the computer desktop and erase them from there. Since the flash drive has a limited number of writes, I feel it is safer to prolong the drive by NOT writing over things 35 times.
My eeepc has a ssd (solid state drive) which is the same as a flash drive. I don't erase nor defrag it.

When I check the flash drive, after I've moved my items off, it tells me the full size and says 0 GB used so I assume it doesn't have a directory on it with items I've moved off. I do this instead of deleting files on my flash drives.

If you are concerned, you could format the flash drive.
