I just did a clean install of XP SP3 with all windows updates.
    Everything was running good.

I installed AVG 8.5 (using /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch). I also unchecked linkscanner during custom install and dl'd latest updates.
    Everything was still running good.

I installed Spybot S&D 1.62 (no teatimer) and updated it.
Im thinking this is where my troubles started because I read somewhere that S&D has issues with IE8 but I dont know for sure because I installed Adobe Reader 910(the 25.5 MB version) immediately after from a CD so I didnt use IE after installing S&D. Adobe Reader prompted me to install updates and I did. This is when I noticed the slow down with IE. It takes about 30 seconds for IE to open and then another 10 seconds to get to Google. Once it opens everything runs fine.

I uninstalled Adobe Reader. No change.
I uninstalled Spybot S&D. No Change.
    I uninstalled AVG. No Change.
I have no restore points because I usually turn them off until I get everything installed the way I want it then I defrag and if I remember, turn it back on.

I dont have a problem reformatting again but I dont want to screw it up again.

    This is an older PC:
    MB: MS6340M
    CPU: AMD ATHLON XP1800
    Ram: 1G
    Video Card: gForce2 mx/mx400

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

I see that you have IE 8 and also downloaded Spybot and uninstalled the last one. IE 8 has an issue with the immunization of Spybot and therefore should only be used without immunization. Read it here: http://groups.google.com/group/micr..._frm/thread/3ef37656ce18f036/579478566ac1ee9b

Sometimes IE 8 slows down a computer while with others it doesn't. It's difficult to say why as every system is different.

See if, when you uninstall IE 8, things will improve. Here are some links/guides as how to remove IE 8.

Hope the above helps. Good luck!

HaHa, love the final post in that link ^^
"Previous protections" - did I miss something?

Personally, I would add a third choice - install Firefox, Adblock Plus, NoScript and LinkExtend + KeyScrambler, which also works with IE.

Great that it worked for you. :)

Thing is that Windows considers IE 8 as an important update so it will present itself (again) as an update.

There are some ways to block Windows from installing IE 8 again.

    1) Download IE 8 Blocker Tool here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=21687628-5806-4ba6-9e4e-8e224ec6dd8c

When running the tool it will ask you for a location to save it, choose C:
Then open a CMD prompt (Start > Run and type CMD if XP (or if Vista click Start type in Start Search CMD and then right click CMD and choose Run as Administrator) > type at the prompt CD C:\ and hit enter) then at the C: prompt type IE80Blocker.cmd /B

To re-enable it go to CMD prompt and type IE80Blocker.cmd /U

    OR

    2) In (Windows) Automatic Updates, check the box in front of: Notify me but don't automatically download or install them.
When you will get notified of updates, you can select which updates to install and tell IE 8 "don't install". After that IE 8 will show in Windows Update site as optional update. Whenever you wish to install IE 8 again, just select optional update and select it.

    Have fun! ;)

PS: Yep, I've got FF, Adblocker Plus, No Script etc. etc.

Thanks for all the info. I will try FF etc. on my pc. This one is my moms and I dont like to change anything on it or I will get non-stop phone calls and its impossible to explain to her these things over the phone :)

    Another related question:

After I uninstalled IE8, it reverted to IE6 not 7, and there wasnt an option to install 7 at Windows Update. Is 7 still available?

    Rant:
It seems like I just installed IE7 maybe 6 months ago and its allready gone. And whats up with the limited customizability (think i made that word up) in 7 & 8? I was able to get the menu bar, the address bar, and all the buttons in one line with IE6. And why do I need a search bar when Google is my home page? I should at least be able to remove it.

Spybot S&D immunization does work with IE8 thats why its running slow because the immunization is kicking in making IE8 safe to browse. Im running both programs and mine to is running slow at start up.
