What to do with all these vehicles?

I'm listening to Rush Limbaugh at the moment, and he brings an interesting question to the table, though I believe he's said that it wasn't his to begin with.

When all these GM and Chrysler dealerships close, what's going to happen with the vehicles on site? You can't just lock the door to the building and walk away.

Also, If you're planning on or have recently bought a vehicle from a closing dealership will that effect your choice? A lot of new vehicles return to the dealerships for service, how far will you have to drive now?

Limbaugh also suggests, (albeit comically) that we give a car from these lots to each of the people who have houses that they can't afford. We're buying these houses for them, might as well give them a vehicle too. :cool

LOL, but do you really think Obama will let GM close. The effect on the USA would be staggering, IMO. But what do I know, I'm only an Aussie. :-D

For Every GM and Chrysler dealership about to close, you can bet your butt there's a Toyota / Nissan / Kia / whatever dealership drooling, and trying everything to open. Why would anyone say no, when they could keep everyone employed, and keep the money coming in. It might hurt the ecomony, but I'd say yes, Obama will let them close without question.

Toyota etc. dealerships are more concentrated in urban areas and have far less dealerships than the big 3.

Okay, this link is from 2007 but it explains why Toyota has less dealerships than the big 3, yet sell more cars. http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/27/toyota-satisfied-with-number-of-u-s-dealers/

PS: people who cannot afford their homes aren't living there anymore due to foreclosure. They're probably living in tents, in their cars, on the streets or with family. Are they supposed to park their "free" cars in front of their tents? ;)

People who can't afford there homes are being bailed out by the government with the tax money I pay, on top of the mortgage I can afford for myself. I understand that we're not going to turn out these unsold cars to the people who have homes in foreclosure, but you can't expect dealers to let lots sit empty and just find another line of work. These people are all salesmen, and they will sell things. I don't care what the logic is behind where the foreign car dealers are located, when a prime location comes up empty, they'd be fools not to send someone in to talk to them about switching to a more reliable product. Most of all these people are community members, with relationships stemming to others in the community, and to thier employees, if they see a way to keep money coming in, and keep people on the pay roll, they're going to do it.

Toyota is about to come out with a full size Dually with 4 doors, and you can bet it's going to get a lot of the market share when it does hit the streets.

I guess in the end, we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out, but you can bet there are 1,000 dealerships in the GM line that are looking for a way to keep making money.

Limbaugh had a guest on some time ago, pre-election, and commented that Congress was trying to force the Big 3 to build cars no one wants. The reply was: They already are.

I really have to applaud Ford for not taking any bailouts.

I'm sure I heard that show, I don't miss many. It's true they're making cars that at least not too many people want, and I get the point.

I've often thought that it would be nice for a university to go in with a car dealer, heck even segway and have something on the campus to include with tuition, if you choose, and give you reliable transportation for your time in school. could have it low jacked to shut off, say 3 miles away from a set point.

I don't know how that would work though, and it wouldn't solve any problems. most of the universities would just buy those darn Prius' LOL
