I have an actual disc that I had sent to me from the Ubuntu site and I can't get it to load.

I get to the screen where it says Loading, please wait..., Blah, blah, blah and at the bottom there is this:
    ubuntu@ubuntu:~$

It won't go any further. Am I missing something?:banghead

When you get the option at the beginning, do not accept the default. I'm not sure what key, it might be F3, that you press for other options. Choose VESA safe mode - sometimes a distro doesn't have the proper video drivers so I select this everytime I run a live CD.
Another option that works, if it seems to hang at loading is to choose noscsi.
Try VESA and see if it works. If it still hangs, try VESA and noscsi.

The one that I'm currently trying to load is a Celeron 1.0ghz with 256mb.

your memory may be a problem here - the recommended minimum is 384mb

If memory is the issue, then I have plenty more that I can put in. This is a spare comp, so it's not juiced with too much hardware.

I took plodr's suggestion and started it in safe mode (F4) and everything seems to be loading ok.

Ya, most likely you need more memory as even Linux has bloated up! Go Figure! A 1GHz Celly ought to be fine but I haven't fired that one up for a while.

    Hey

If you want a lightweight distro you could give PuppyLinux a go. It comes with all the usual tools and I have brought a few old PC's back from the grave with it recently. There is also another lightweight distro called Damn Small Linux that is meant to be really good although I have no personal experience with it.

If you really want to go the ubuntu route Xubuntu 8.04 should do the job although i would double check the memory first.

Puppy is great though, I have it running on some ancient box with a 266 cyrix and a tiny amount of ram and it does the job admirably for email, web, simple office tasks etc.

    Hope it helps!
