My Soundcard Won't Work!

    Alright, starting at the beginning:

I've just purchased a new video card, so when I went to put it in my computer I had to take out the modem card (for dial up) which was installed when I bought my computer. I had to move around my wireless adapter and my soundcard because the vid card would only fit on the bottom.

So all was fine and dandy. Then I turn on the computer, and the sound is gone. My comp doesn't detect that there's a sound card at all. So, I took out the wireless adapter, and put the sound card in that slot, and voila! There was sound!

So I just put in the wireless adapter in the spot that my sound card had been, and turned on my comp, and no more sound! No more detection! URG!

If someone can please help, it would be much appreciated. I know that all my PCI slots work, and that all the cards are in good condition. I'm not too computer savvy technical wise, but I do have a boyfriend who knows a bit more than I do!

    Thanks :)

    Hi

Possible is by moving some hardware cards around the device IRQs have moved and one could possibly be conflicting with your sound, so please tell us what Dell model you have, eg. Dell Insperon 2340 (shoudl be on sticker on your PC case)

But if you dont find it easy then follow the below steps for Everest log

To find this info you can use the likes of Everest to find this info, at times a summary log of your PC can help, to do this

    Install Everest and run
Click Report (top menu) > Report Wizard > Next
    Choose All Pages > Next
Choose Plain Text > Finish and wait for report to generate
Click Save to File and leave the File Name as Report, then click the Save as Type dropdown and choose Report files (*txt) and click Save (n.b. Save to desktop is best as easy place to find it, use Browse to locate desktop)

Then attach your log to your next post as per these instructions HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post

Please do attach the log as above steps as much easier to read the log and this thread that way.

As my suggestion to you in asking the above is for you to delete/uninstall your audio/sound driver from Device Manager and then install again the correct one for your Dell PC, so we can get it working again hopefully.

Cheers for info, but do you have any yellow ! marks in Device Manager as that can tell us where any issues are in drivers? to enter Device Manager in XP click System icon in Control Panel, choosing the Hardware tab, and clicking Device Manager.

Did you try ninstalling the Audio from Device Manager if so what was result on reboot?

Tip dont really need report if you have model of PC as all drivers will be listed on makers support site and in the tech specs comes all the hardware devices, while Eversest logs are good in some case, they dont tell you anything different if you know the PCs make and model :)

@Miarowyn install the Chipset driver and then reboot and then install the Audio Driver from here at Dell for your model, hopefully that should correct any issues in IRQs if the cards have been moved around. As you have SP3 (UAA built into SP3) you shouldnt need the UAA driver I hope!!

May need to re-install the WiFi card drivers if that ends up not working after updating the audio.

    Ok, here's what I did.
I went and checked in the device manager, and no, there aren't any yellow "!"s. There is a "?" with "ethernet controller" beside it, but I've always had that there, long before the soundcard problem started.

Anywho, I uninstalled all the stuff for my soundcard, rebooted and tried to reinstall it, but it said that the card wasn't physically installed, and stopped before any installation.
There was also nothing to uninstall in the device manager. Poo!

I did install the audio driver from dell, rebooted, and then uninstalled the soundcard stuff, rebooted and tried to reinstall the soundcard stuff. Nothing! Urg.

    What do I do now?
    Thanks!

Before you installed this new card was your sound from an internal speaker? If so you must disable it in the BIOS.

    Geminiione,
I'm not sure what you mean?

The sound card I have with my computer came with the computer when I bought it, nothing has changed with the sound card.

I just got a new video card, before that, it was whatever my motherboard was running on. And the new vid card is working fine.

    :)

what i meant was is it an actual card or is built into the motherboard. if it is an actual card do you have one you know that works and swap it out? cards have been known to die. any card will do even an older one

    Geminiione,
My sound card is an actual card. I know that it still works because when I had taken out the internet card, I heard the startup music for xp. I know that all of my cards are still functional, and that all of my PCI slots are still functional, it just seems that all the slots aren't functional when I actually use all the cards in them.

Before I had put in the new vid card, I had an old dial up modem card in there (which came with the pc). I'm not even sure if that worked, but I had never used it. And now the internet wireless card was moved to that slot and works, but my soundcard was moved to the slot that previously housed the wireless internet card, and it doesn't work. My pc won't pick up that anything is in there.

    :)

sounds like you have IRQ conflict. what you will need to do is find a IRQ that does not conflict with each other. it is not uncommon for sond card and NIC's to have the same IRQ. go to device manager and look at the properties for network card and go to the resourse tab and find out what IRQ it is using. if possible you might be able to change it depending on the card and software that installs with it

Ok, so I've fixed it! Yay! Everything is working perfectly! :) Thanks anyway, everyone! :D
