The full paid version of MalwareByte's does NOT run on 64bit versions of Vista :( SuperAntiSpyware's full paid version says that it runs "in 32-bit mode under 64-bit versions of Windows. We will have native 64-bit drivers later this year". So.... any ideas?

Um. Avast? Um... None?.. If you know your way around the internet, and know what/where you're doing and going. You'll be fine. I personally use Avast!, and I find it good. Other than that, Process Explorer and Autoruns are my anti-viruses. :)

We already have virus protection with Avira (free version) and really wanted MalwareByte's full paid version as a 2nd different line of defense. We actually had to buy the reg keys and enter them before finding out that it isn't x64 compatible. :mad It doesn't say anything about MBAM not working with x64 Vista anywhere on the MBAM download page here at Major Geeks.
Right now, it looks like Spyware Terminator will fill the void until more info can be found.

    (here's a somewhat related thread: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=190310 )

EDIT - Spyware Terminator DOES NOT offer protection with x64 Vista either!!! :boxing :banghead It only offers scanning/removal of spyware.... I guess I'll try something else????

Spyware Doctor? Definitely for 64 bit. Paid version seems to be real time protection. Check it out: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Spyware_Doctor_d4241.html and at the author's site where they show additional options on which one to get: http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doct...medium=text&utm_content=title&utm_campaign=sd
Never used it myself so cannot comment on it.

PS: perhaps with a bit of search one would be able to find more apps?

LOL I did a search for "64bit antispyware" and was surprised by the lack of useful info I got. Yeah, there was thousands of 'hits' but nothing worth a :crap It was that search that led me to try Spyware Terminator (which is actually a great freeware app for 32bit XP and 2000). Since freeware doesn't matter (the PCs owner is willing to pay for quality protection) I'll suggest CounterSpy and Spyware Doctor... thanks!

    Hi dlb

I wouldnt get too hung up on applications needing to be x64 native, if they run on an x64 OS in 32bit mode they will still protect you the same. Its going to be in rough estimation another 6-12mths before we see x64 native apps being the norm, more likely after release of Win7 as from some user feedback from testers of this many took this OS to be the jump point into x64 as now Vista is over a few years old x64 drivers and compatible apps are the norm.

I just tend to use Avast as its native x64, Spywareblaster (x86) and Win Defender

But agree that if cost is not issue, go with paid SpywareDoctor.

    I don't understand?
I have a fully paid up MBAM 1.36 and it runs on Windows 7RC X64bit.
I have just tried all the functions and the icon remains open in the task bar.

Halo, I thought the major software companies weren't going to start making 64bit systems the default till the OS after W7?

    Hi Drizzles.

For general consumers they may stick with x86, but for many and as I mentioned this estimate was from beta testers who tend to jump to the latest versions a little more quickly than that of general users, but as x64 is in Vista no stable, its vastly more stable in Win7, which many developers are jumping on to create x64 native apps at some point in next 12mths +/- most devs are thinking x64 and have apps in alpha or beta stages ready to go, if they dont then they should to maximise x64.

At this point in security one of the main and they have been committed to developing their app alongside various Windows betas is AWIL the makers of Avast, they had one of the only early working security apps in Vista and have done same in Win7, many others have not and still running their apps in x64 in native x86 mode.

Chatting to the likes of Acronis contacts, they are geared to Win7 and x64, but likely just after RTM as they wait for stable and final release in case some glaring update pops up that has them changing their code, some companies as in AWIL do just develop on the fly alongside the beta, others will follow as it now is the IMHO right time to goto x64, I have Vista x64 and Win7 x64 Oses on a few PCs working without issue and allowing you to use more than 4GB ram is these days of ram hungry apps a bonus as ram is cheap at present.

A 6GB system in x64 Vista runs without loosing breath at all, which as we know from past experiences ram spec grows with each new OS, no matter who releases it, so 4-6GB systems will be the norm I feel this time next year running win7 x64.... I see no reason not to for the OEMs to not offer x64 OS by default, while at present they dont, a fair few systems are x86 and still come with more than 3GB ram, why as its not going to be used!

:confused Now that is very strange. In x64 Vista, as soon as I clicked the "Enable Protection" button, I get the obnoxious GLONK! sound and an error window with "Error: 732,0,0". I don't remember the rest of message but I looked it up at the MBAM forums and here's what they say:
    "Error Code: 732
Fix: None. Protection module currently does not work on x64 versions of Windows."

However.... I recently was in the MBAM forums (about 3 minutes ago) and discovered that there is currently a new beta (v1.37b) that enables the protection module in x64 Vista. Link: http://*** removed beta download link at the request of MBAM forum moderators *** How Bill got 1.36 to work in the W7 RC is odd. Maybe something about x64 W7 is different from x64 Vista? Who knows.... anyway- thanks to all who posted, and the PCs owner opted for Super AntiSpyware's full version as it will run in 32bit mode just fine on x64 Vista.
    :-D

(visit the MBAM forums if you're interested in the 1.37beta - Forum link: http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?act=idx )

    Hi Drizzles

Yes, native x64 is slow going but its coming with more devs taking onboard the fact that we are moving towards x64 more, TBH I would personally not go back to x86 OS now, x64 is mature and most apps work fine, maybe not x64 native but work in legacy x86 mode.

Apps with x64 native mode are coming, but slowly.
