Does this need a Malware "Fix"?

    SUPERAntiSpyware Free picked this up:

    C:\PROGRAM FILES\JAVA\JRE1.6.0_04\BIN\JDBCODBC.DLL - ("Threat Level 7/10").

Should I take it to the Malware Forum, or simply Quarantine it or Delete/Remove it? If I go to Malware I would have to run all those things that seem to take me DAYS and many multiple posts to run/complete.

I don't know why this all has to be so technical and complicated (I'm really feeling like it's some sort of 'Great Right AND Left-wing" - "Conspiracy" - though I'm not quite paranoid-enough to think that it is only being perpetrated on ME, and ME alone lol).

It just seems to me if the anti-spy/anit-mal. program picked it up it could give a better explanation of EXACTLY what it is. Or should I simply be grateful, and proceed?

    Thanks in advance ...

PS - I did just recently update Java, and had both the current and a past Java update installed at the same time. Maybe this was part of the problem?

Thank you very much DomLuc. Most of your reply I "basically" understand (I think?), so if I may, I'd like to ask about your last two paragraphs:

I understand you said; "Personally, I ...", but my understanding of the 3rd-party uninstallers was/is that they are more-or-less a 'last resort' sort of option ... is it not better to try Windows Add/Remove first, and then using the others (of which, "Revo" I have recently installed here) secondarily? I have read here that "AbsoluteUninstall/Uninstaller" is also a good program for this. I also have "KillBox" installed on my machines, though I've never had much (ANY) luck using it (due to my incompetence, I'm sure).

Just so I'm clear on this, are you saying that it appears that all of the Java Updates (traces, etc.), between the current one that I now have, and the old one that SAS picked-up for me seem to have been "taken care of" (purged), and that for some reason this one just now showing-up in SAS was "stuck" or "hung-up" (technical terms - lol) in the PC, somehow?

    Thanks again - much ...

Thank you. I am more clear now.

Maybe I'm just getting old and "s-l-o-w", but it really seems to me, the further things go down the computer/internet "tech road", the more complicated (i.e.=TIME-CONSUMing) things are getting.

Is it just me, or is there any Truth to this?

    Thanks again ...

Looks to me like the file is legit but it wouldn't hurt to run all the scans, wait patiently in the mean time, and we'll see what's what. :)

Looks like Kes made your response in post #2 out wrong. Some Malware Fighters do read these threads.rolleyes

Although Java is almost like Windows in as much as so many different types of programs require it in order to work properly. Safe to say, in my opinion, that you can never really be free from it.

And Kes is pretty much the exception, traveling here and there, without confining themselves to the malware threads.

Thanks Kes and thanks to all.

I've run SAS (obviously), MalwareBytes (free) and Spyware Terminator (which is, at least currently, my real-time AS protection).

MBAM (FULL scan, run between the other two) showed nothing ("-0-"), I reported the full scan result of SAS here, and the first scan by ST showed somethings also which I quarantined (not sure what else to do with those, though they seemed to be something different than what SAS picked-up).

I suppose my plan here is to do as DomLuc suggested, and uninstall Java 6 Update13 (per instructions given), and then reinstall it?

    Thanks again to all ...

Incredibly-enough, Revo Uninstaller DOES show Java software that Vista Add/Remove (or as they NOW call it: "Programs and Features") does not display.

Should I UN-install "Java DB 10.3.1.4" first or should I UN-install "Java (TM) 6 Update 13" first? Or does it matter?

WAIT! I think I know the answer: 'it would only have mattered if I HADN'T asked, correct'? - lol ...................

I understand that. My question was/is: Does it matter which Java Icon (in Revo) to remove FIRST?

    Hi Glenn

If removing Java best option is JavaRa which removes all old components of java and leaves you the latest version.

Personally wouldnt use Revo as JavaRa as DomLuc mentions works well in this instance.

Thanks David, I really do appreciate all the help here, but I'm becoming increasingly confused.

I think you're saying use JavaRA and don't bother with Revo (in this instance)?

My other question had pertained to Revo, in that there are two icons for Java there (DB 10.3.1.4, and, 6 Update 13). If I am only using JavaRA then this question would be moot. But if I am to use Revo, then DomLuc seemed certain that I should use Revo FIRST, and I was needing to know if there was an order of removing the two icons in Revo.

In the past, I have been told to be very specific and deliberate about the "order" of things - including the removal of things.

Sorry, I just want to be absolutely perfectly clear before I proceed.

Exactly as DomLuc mentions Glenn, which ever method you use just make sure all java versions are gone and just latested installed, I tend to use JavaRa but Revo is also a great app.

Well thank you both. I believe I'll go with DomLuc's instructions here, but I just can't seem to win.

Another question: When I go to Revo, I'm given four "Mode" options to remove/uninstall -

    Built-in?
    Safe?
    Moderate (default)?
    Advanced?

I'm "guessing" moderate/default, but I would really just like to be perfectly clear, as I have a GREAT DEAL of work/maintenance/etc. yet to do on this machine - its performance is pathetic ... its much worse than my already slow and poor performing 7 yr-old machine.

Thanks again as always and in advance ........

    grc123 MajorGeek

Thank you. I have used Revo before (recently), but was not sure, when I did so, of which mode to use (so just stayed with the default).

As the instructions from them (all "reading guides") are not "interactive", when I have questions, I have always come here for answers - that's the only reason I've continued to ask questions (because I can't "ask" the "guide").

    Thanks again .....

    This is SUCH a nightmare.

I did EXACTLY as directed. Revo completed. I restarted. I ran Ccleaner - cleaner AND registry cleaner.

    However, there are still "traces" (?) of Java - "jre1.6.0_04 - Created 4/13/2008 - Size: 9.08MB"

I now can NOT find JavaRA on this PC (which I downloaded last night - apparently TWICE).

I've tried to do all of this from Admin (Vista) to make it easier and hopefully more thorough - but half of the things I click on in there tell me "Access denied" - or that I don't have "permission" or whatever. FROM ADMIN??

How could this PC have POSSIBLY gotten so screwed-up that I can't "access" things from Admin?

Should I download JavaRA (yet again)?

Should I download it in another UA and then attempt to search for it there?

Once my browser is closed, shouldn't I be able to access this (and EVERYTHING for that matter) through my Admin UA?

    Help ... please ......................................................

  22. grc123

    grc123 MajorGeek

Thank you. I think that issue has been resolved. However, I am not able to do things from admin, and am able to do things from other UA's that I think I should only be able to do with the Admin account??

This is the current (long-standing/on-going) dilemma >http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=190416 - which has actually been on-going for a year now. I simply "parked" (packed-up and shoved in the corner!) this PC for the past six months though because it became so maddening.

It may be a big part of "the root" of the problems that I'm having with this PC ...?

  23. grc123

    grc123 MajorGeek

Yes sir. Understood. Java is resolved. Newest/latest version is installed (6, Update13).

So I'm thinking this thread should be done.

Thank you again - very much.
