My PC seemed to get some malware problem last week, with ads popping up and all programs going slow etc. I ran the Read&Run me First support list at the weekend, and it got rid of the pop-ups but everything else (especially Firefox) is still running INCREDIBLY slowly and/or crashing.
If anyone could help me out with this I'd be very very grateful.
I have the logs from the programs/scans in the Read & Run Me First procedure ready to post.

    Thanks if advance.

Not sure exactly which MGTools logs are needed, so runkeys is attached in the previous post, and the rest here. Thanks.

Please attach the C:\MGlogs.zip file that was requested not the files in the C:\MGtools folder. However you are way way out of date with MGtools. Please download the version given in the READ ME and run it again. Then attach the proper log.

Compress your ComboFix log into a ZIP file and attach it. Other option is to split the file into smaller pieces. It should not be this large. Sounds like you may have run it in the past and never uninstall it. Thus you probably have a very large snapshot folder.

I think the ComboFix was run some time ago, must have forgotten to uninstall.

    Cheers

Now we need to use ComboFix again.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi

    Logs attached.

Things are working pretty much the same as before as far as I can tell. If for example I'm playing a Youtube video in one window, if I try to browse in another, the vid will stop and start. I'm sure it's not an internet/network connection problem

I also had a problem yesterday - when I powered up Windows, it came up as Windows Classic style, and there was no option under Appearance (Display properties) to change to XP style. When I logged in today though, it was back to XP style

Your logs are all pretty clean so these do not appear to be related to any remaining malware. However since your scans from SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes were not done with updated versions of the programs, let's do the below just to be safe.

    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this new log.
Now run Malwarebytes and click the Update tab. Then click the Check for Updates button so you update to the current version of the program and database. Then run a new scan with it too. Attach the new log.

Now we need to use ComboFix again to remove one more file.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the new SUPEAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes logs
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

  10. Nero

    Nero Private E-2

    Logs attached.

When I ran ComboFix, my Firewall was still enabled, as there was no icon in the tray, and the program wouldn't open from the start menu.

Also, when I ran C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat, I got a No Disk error message a number of times (this has occured quite a few times when doing various things). I'll attached a print-screen of the message in the next post.

Also attached there is a screen which pops up every time Windows loads, not sure if it's legit or not.

    You're logs are clean.

Based on your logs, this is not due to malware. You should check out the below link and post about this in the Software Forum if you need more help.

    http://www.consumingexperience.com/2007/11/windows-no-disk-exception-processing.html

Yes it is valid. It is Microsoft trying to validate that your copy of Windows is authentic (that is, that the license is valid).

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
