I'm a little confused on a MG forum rule

I surf the forums sometimes looking to learn and seeing what's new and came across a thread in software that was some what confusing in what they were trying to say and if it was breaking the rules.
    This ...
    - No Advertising - Ads, text links or promoting your software or products.
    is from here. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/announcement.php?f=49
    And this..
No Advertising - You are not permitted to make money using Majorgeek. You are not allowed to use the member list to obtain Instant Messenging screennames to harrass people to purchase a product from you.
    From here..

There is a post in soft ware that is possibly breaking the first one. Also are we allowed to post the rules in their threads or is that a moderators place?

I myself usually try to steer them in the correct direction if I can. Takes some of the pressure off of the Mods.
    Called "self-policing".
    It's our forum too,you know.

It depends actually. If someone is just breaking a rule with something he said then it is in order to remind them of the rule in a polite manner. But you never know if the other guy will be offended or if they will overreact so I think it's better to just hit the report button (upper right corner of each post) and leave it for the Mods.

On the other hand, when there's a spam thread containing inapropriate links (to porn sites / pharmacy stores etc) you should never post there telling them that it's wrong. This way you would just bump the thread to the top of the MG page and thus harm our forum. Again the best thing to do is hit the report button describing the violation that you have noticed.

When I do point something out to an offender, I am always polite and request that they refrain from doing it.
Have been thanked several times for letting them know that they were doing wrong.Too many don't bother to read the rules so they don't know.
Have never had a bad reaction from them.

Yeah, but the one rule states advertise to make money and the other rule just says no advertising. The situation was that this party was advertising but there was no money mentioned the only thing that was Possibly against the rule was posting a link to a free ware sight. and I'm not sure if that is totally a rule.

if you're not sure, you can just click the red triangle at the top right of the post to report it to a mod and they can check it out.

What if somebody posts their freeware download (not spamming it) and there's google ads on the page?

    Just wondering.

Really hate getting into these things, but will

A gentle nudge at times is great on the rules and regs,

But Sailor is correct please do report a thread if you think its spamming, advertising, not on topic or attacking another member and let the admins/mods review it, we review alot per day and many you dont see as the spam filter catches them, sadly some of them are legit threads and posts and got caught up due to using ........... in the paragraphs, to using too many smilies to not using paragraphs to split text up etc

Advertising is a tricky one as we have many developers here which we have known for many years and allow them to post about their apps, but on the other hand their are ones we dont know that are using Majorgeeks for hits to their forums, sites, and applications as we are popular site, not an easy task to judge what right or wrong, but we have had many years of weeding out who is spamming (wont get it all right all of the time)

Some new members like one today who posted a user happy story, gained comments on how his use of english was, not everyone is from native English speaking country and not great to make this member feel unwelcome either, I deleted some comments (one was ok as it pointed out that all users are not native english speakers but was out of context when other posts where deleted so I deleted it too) and one spammer in that thread, but as I did a little checking on him and he is active on Wilders Security forum respected site like Majorgeeks, and their admins/mods are good and would have deleted them as a spammer, I deemed his post ok and added that we do have this AV listed at Majorgeeks (at times we actually change the links to other sites to ours as you may have noticed on occasion).

If we deleted all posts mentioning applications that users find great and want to share, many members here would be deleted already, so its a balancing act, right some times wrong others.

Sending the tech area threads into lounge type posts with off-topic comments will be deleted, as we need to keep our famed for quality of posts and tech help up in the tech areas, if an admin/mod has posted in it then likely they deemed it ok, so if a thread is reported and comments are it it are deleted do not be offended if your posts are deleted too.

Please just report the thread dont post in it that you have reported it, crack wise jokes, etc it just bumps the thread and gets it noticed more, all admins/mods get emails on a reported thread post, so will get to it asap, if spamming or causing offence it will be deleted and user banned or more likey deleted.

If I followed the rules by the letter then one member in this thread would be breaking this rule in the thread mentioned above

Am I going to ban/delete/remove their postcount? no as the rules are guides open to judging the facts at hand.

@Aimee ~ If they have a freeware download they created and it looks like a genuine app and developer then in honesty most freeware apps need to get cash somewhere so google ads are a fact on many sites forums etc but report the thread/post and someone from the admin team will look it over and like thesmokingun did in one thread post the link to how to contact Tim or Jim to see if they would add it to the downloads we list, many developers have had great apps added some have not been added as the downloads section has only tested and approved apps added.

Again this is not an exact science and some posts maybe left some not.

To all again many many thanks as for along time the report a post has worked great so cheers for using this system, it helps us more than posting in a spam thread or sending one into chaos.

Thank You Halo.I just didn't want to get anyone in trouble or worse kicked off for not reading the rules first. I'm a guilty party there as well.It wasn't until a week later after I signed up did I "Read" the rules as I was not completely sure how, what and where to post. Got slapped on the hand pretty hard in another forum. Unbeknown to me that I posted the wrong thing in the wrong area the first time I posted there.needless to say I haven't been back.

Well, that's pretty inconsiderate and stupid on their part.:confused Everyone makes innocent mistakes. There are mods that have let the sense of power get to their heads and think they are all important.rolleyes Common sense and courtesy makes for a good mod/admin and perhaps a diplomat at times too.:)

See, this is a judgment call too as I often post twice in a row in a thread because the timer ran out and I had some extra info to post up. I don't consider these as hard and fast rules but more like guidelines.

C'mon augiedoggie, the mods on MG are not power freaks at all. At least none I have encountered. The spam/advert rule was to avoid the "Free iPod" with spyware infected links we see on other parts of the web.

Besides that we ignore you most of the time! :p

Thinking he was referring to the mods in bigtrucks post at another board, BOOM.

Basically, I go by if it looks like spam, use the report button. There was a time I think my brain was off and I actually clicked on a link a spammer put up....immediate infection. :cry
