i have windows xp and as of 2 days ago I cannot get on the internet. I have a netgear router and belkin adaptor which are both working fine. The problem is it keeps saying no ip address. We even did the ping test and it says unreachable and also no packets. comcast also says i am working fine. i have 3 laptops able to connect to the internet but my desktop will not connect. i am using my laptop to type this so excuse the capitalization, I need to use my keyboard to type. Compusa says i have to restore factory settings, please help as I do not want to lose programs that I have no idea where the install disks are or all my information. I can't go to major geeks to run the read me first programs so how can i do them? Also this all started after I downloaded the avg program from major geeks website. And then TR/dldr.Fraudload.eix kept popping up and so when I ran a scan it said it took it away and then I did a turn off system restore and rescanned and then turned system restore on and rebooted (so now I can't even go back to an old time and do a system restore). Then I had this issue about getting online. Neither IE8 or firefox will connect to the internet. Please help, I am in desperate need of getting back online with my desktop. My little monitor at the bottom right of my desktop shows a monitor with the yellow triangle box and an exclamation in the middle(like the icon by my name). When I say connect it says it cant find an ip address.

How well do you know your way around? I would remove the ethernet controller from device manager and let it redetect it to see if that helps. You will also need to have the driver handy, just in case.

Had a machine the other day that lost the internet and CDROM drives and managed to run Malwarebytes anti-malware to restore. Worth a run if all else fails:

I am kind of familiar with the computer but do not have any drivers and since moving not sure where my program disk for the belkin is. I have had belkin on the phone and we have determined it is not the adapter, so did compusa. I took the tower up there. My son actually set it up but he said all he had to do was plug it in. If someone could walk me through it that would be great. Netgear says they can not help me because my router is over a year old. I do not believe it is my router though, both of my kids can get online wirelessly with their laptops. I am using another laptop right now through the netgear router. Any more suggestions?

Frankly, CompUSA is wrong (no shock there) because you have a triangle indicating a bad connection or problem. Telling someone to restore from factory settings means they are lazy and\or do not know how to fix it, a VERY common cop-out to a malware problem, it is faster and easier for them to wipe your hard drive.

It is always important to know where all installation and driver CD's are for exactly this sort of problem, however drivers are frequently updated so downloading latest drivers when you can is the best bet.

Checklist time, lets get this figured out:

What brand and model number is your wireless card in the Compaq??
Have you always connected to the router with this same car?
Did you run Malwarebytes to see if your clean as mentioned above?

I have an HP desktop that can't get online. It has windows xp other than that I an computer stupid. Not sure what you are asking. It has always up til 2 days ago connected by the same router. I can not get online to run the malware program. I ran the scan with avg and it said it detected one thing and quarantined it but it was a coupon printer that has been on the computer forever, so I know that was not the problem but I let it quarantine it anyway. I sure appreciate you trying to help me. I guess the easiest way to explain things to me would be think of trying to teach a kid, I really do not know much of all the computer lingo, just going on the programs and using them. TY

We can keep trying until we get there. I would love to remove the card, but want to be sure we have drivers first. Ill walk you through it once we do that. Since you can not download anything now, we can try working past that.

You can always download the programs from the laptops you have, then burn them onto a CD, then bring them to your computer to install. I need to know what wireless adapter you have so we can get the drivers.

    Try this:

    Start, control panel
You should see Wireless Network Connection. Right click that and choose properties.
Hopefully under "Connect Using" there us a wireless adapter listed that you can tell us.

If you can not do this, we need to use Everest or similar and have you run it. Let me know.

it is a belkin wireless g plus mimo usb n model # F5D9050C. We do know that the wireless adaptor is working though. But I am open to try anyway except paying $179 and then losing all my programs. We even tried forcing the internet address instead of letting it automatically obtain an address. I have also tried just plugging an ethernet cord directly to the computer and netgear router but it still will not find an ip address. Like I said it was working properly up until 2 days ago. But am willing to take any help I can get. I will be out for a few hours this evening so I will work on it as soon as I get back. Thanks for attempting to help me, I really appreciate it.

:cry I have changed out all the components, router, wireless adaptor and checked the my comcast ethernet cord can connect online. I have determined it is a windows xp service pack 3 issue but do not have a clue of how to fix it. If someone could give me and idea without me having to pay microsoft $80 to ask a questions that would be great. Remember I am not an IT tech so I do not understand all that tech talk. All 3 of my laptops can get online but not my desktop, it is the only one with windows xp service pack 3. Thank you

Have you called belkin yet? Here are a few links that may be helpful. Have you tried to manually reset your IP address? Did you do what Major ask you yet? Does your computer see the Wireless adapter?
