    Hi

Moved your post to its own thread as other was talking about graphic cards and your question would likely get lost as not same topic.

But to answer this question we would need to know what motherboard you have installed in your PC and if it supports a Core2Duo CPU?

Some questions to help you help us answer you......

Hello dapsonrock most likely if you have a P4 processor then it will be runnning on a mothebroard with the Socket T (LGA 775) which can run all the intel single, duo and quadcore processors (with the exception of the new intel i7 proccessors which are awesome but cost loooooads :p).
So yeah like Halo below has mentionend get everest installed, get the report generated, then post it here and we will be able to tell whether you can run an intel duo core proccessor according to which mobo you have.

    Regards,

    Dacads

Its an HP D230 made pc. If thats not enough i will source more info from my pc.
    Thanks for you feed.

Last year i tried a benchmark software which gave a report that my MOBO can support up to 4ghz of processing. I thought it would make sense to get a 2ghz dual core if my PC can support dual core.

If you won't follow Halos suggestion, the best I can say is This which seems to say that you can't. If we don't know the mobo then that's all you can find.

augiedoggie! plz try and read everything on a post before commenting. I said i will upload my pc's info, the one i gave is just a brief detail, Okey Dude!

I have a 200watt power supply in my casing. I just want to know if upgrading my power supply to a 460watt power supply will damage my board or anything on the board. Cheers

Hello again dapsonrock, after reading that pdf document that augiedoggie gave link to I can confirm you have a Intel 845GV Motherboard, all details of the PC can be found in that document. So unfortunately you can't replace your P4 processor with a dual core processor.
Best thing to do now is either stay with that PC or just buy a new one because it looks like that is a old motherboard so not a lot can be upgraded, other options would be to buy a new motherboard if not then like I said buy a new PC or build your own one.
    Other opinions please

Don't get your shorts in a knot.;) I meant no harm.:) As to upgrading your power supply while a nice thing to do and which will not damage anything as your components will only take what they need, it begs the question why unless you don't trust your old one, which is fine.

However, if you will build a new PC and you spec in a good video card, say an 8800GT or better you will need a higher powered PSU and if you buy a new PC then it's most likely a waste of money to upgrade the PSU. Keep the money in your pocket for now.IMHO

How did this all of a sudden switch from a CPU to a PSU?
Post 1 didn't make things clear from the start as there are several different types of P4 (socket 478 and the LGA775).Won't interchange.
Should give some detail before expecting to get a worthwhile answer.

    Power supply

    Thanks for yor feed augiedoggie!

    1) If a graphics cards requirement is 450 watt and i have a 200watt power supply will the graphics card work, if it works will it be that the graphics card will not give its maxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx function?

    2) If any one know how power supply works, can i manipulate the power supply to get 450watt. I am an electical engineering student, jst want to verify.

    Thanks ones again

exactly it's obvious he is unaware what CPU socket is on his motherboard, that's why people have suggested to post full pc report here and given pc support manuals to determine the motherboard and we have already found out the socket is 478 so unable to run dual core.

    1) no the graphics card won't work if the PSU is 200watt because there won't be enough power to generate graphics card.

    2) No, you can't manipulate PSU to 450watts the only option is to buy new a new PSU that is the required standard of the graphics card

    Re: Power supply

    1) The graphics card will just not work if it's underpowered. Period. Remember P=I*E

    2) You want to pull 450W out of a 200W one?:confused NEVER! Uum, what year are you in your EE courses? I'm biting my lip here.

Thanks to everyone who contibuted to my topic, it's grate to have people who will answer questions "Learning alone takes time".

I am a first year elect student, as for my idea of geting a max of 450watt, i was thinking it could be a good idea to replace some resistors to increase the overall out output current which will eventually lead to
(max output voltage * max current = !!!Watts ).

Some power supply manufacturer lie about the max power of their power supply, for example your power suppy can be labeled 450watts but it's not upto 450watts. I read this info from a web base site.

Well, not only resistors have to be changed but all other components have to be rated for basically double the power. I can hear the electrolytic capacitors popping right now.;) Here's a wiki on switching power supplies.

Might possibly upgrade to a P4 HT type.
    (dual-core wannabe)

    Lol mine is HT:-D

Anyway so what exactly are you going to do dapsrock? :p

You buying a new mobo and PSU?

I will stick to my p4 for a while until have got money to buy the latest MOBO, GPU and one of the most powerfull and reliable power supply.
My curiosity have pulled me into something else(WIFI Signals). I am gattering knowledge from different souces on how to build my own WIFI signal booster called Cantenna, which will enable me to pick up microwave signals far away.
I really appreciate efforts of people who actually replied to my post. Guys keep it up, thats the way life should be. i will also try my best to contribute to this forum.
    Cheers Everyoneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee:cool:-D!
