Working on an HP Pav 743g. I updated the Intel Audio and was left with no sound. Then I uninstalled it and tried to reinstall. Still no sound. Here's my Everest Report.

Each time I try to reinstall and update - the pc crashes and restarts.

Thanks so much - I'm in the doghouse.

Uninstall your current sound driver and restart the PC when the uninstall is finished. Download your chipset drivers from this link and install 'em. Restart the PC. Then download the 'generic' Relatek AC97 driver from this link and install it, then restart the PC again. Let us know if this works... if not, we'll try something different.

    1. I uninstalled the multimedia audio controller
    2. Restarted
    3. Upon restart message read "new found hardward - Realtek AC '97," and it prompted me to run the wizard - I did not.
    4. Linked to the driver and installed from Geek site.
    5. Restarted
    6. New Found Hardward Wizard Appeared - I ran it
    7. A warning about the hardware not having a the right logo from microsoft appeared - I chose to "continue anyway"
    8. PC crashed and restarted while running New Hardward Wizard.
    9. Still no sound.

    Other ideas?

:confused Hmmmm..... odd..... you didn't list the Intel chipset drivers in your step-by-step. It would be step number 3.5 (between step 3 and 4) and you'd restart after, then continue as you did above. I provided a link to the Intel chipset drivers in my post earlier. In step 6, you say the Hardware Wizard opened again, what device is mentioned in the Wizard? Since the audio opens the Wizard in step 3, and you install the audio driver in step 4, it's a bit puzzling as to why the New Hardware Wizard is opening again.....

For my own piece of mind I followed the steps again and carefully documented:

    1. Uninstalled multimedia audio controller
    2. restart
    3. installed INF Update for Intel 800 Series Chipsets (via link)
    4. restarted
    5. installed Realtek AC '97 Audio
    6. restarted
    7. ran New Hardward Wiz for Realtek AC '97 Audio Controller (automatically came up upon restart)
    8. system crash and restart on its own
    9. error reporting "Windows WDM driver for Realtek AC'97 ACCXWDM.SYS
NOTE: New Hardward Wizard prompts every restart for Realtek and I canceled each time until step (7.)

Now, I did not unistall Audio Codec, Legacy Audio Drivers - do I need to uninstall them as well?

This machine is SUPER Slow. Do you recommend running CCleaner to speed things up while I'm working...?

    Thanks Much

If the PC is really slow, there's something else going on and the lack of sound is probably less important at this point. Running CCleaner is not a magical fix to speed up a PC. It will remove excess junk files, cookies, temporary files, etc, but this will probably not speed up your PC. Running CCleaner is but one step in getting a PC back up to speed. If I were you, I'd temporarily disable the sound device in the Device Manager and work on getting the PC running normally. Read and follow the steps in this link on basic maintenance. Once that's done, run some malware scans as per the steps in this guide. Once that's done, and if you're malware free, we'll work on getting the sound going. Good luck!

It was slow-poke hell restarting so many times, and now PC is as good as it's going to get as far as maintenance. But, yes. Getting sound to work is #1 goal. Any ideas on what to do next?

Still no sound. I don't know where to check next. Any thoughts...?

I did some deeper research, and it appears that your motherboard was available in 2 different configurations: one with the Realtek audio, and one with Analog Devices audio (AD1981A). You can download the AD sound driver from this link. However, do not install it by simply running the downloaded file, extract it and install it using the info in this thread (you'll need to install TUGzip from the first part of the steps at that link). Be sure to completely uninstall the current faulty sound drivers first.
    Good luck!

I'm fairly certain it's Realtek. It was the one there before, and it's the one that automatically pops up each time I uninstall it. It pops up as new found hardware each time and on its own without me installing it.

This is getting frustrating. This pc definatley has Realtek. When I install the Intel driver, it doesn't show up in the device manager as it had been there before. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but it's still without sound and I'm at a deadend.

    thanks

    Hi
I have spent the past few days surfing the net to sort out a similar problem with Realtec drivers. I finnally got it sorted last night. These drivers seem to be causing a huge problem. I had to manually install the driver, this is the method I used. Give it a go and post back to let us know if it worked.

    1) Download the latest drivers. Put the downloaded driver in a file somewhere you can find it again, I parked it on the desktop.

    2) Go to Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device manager and uninstall the non-functioning sound card device/driver.

    3) Restart the PC. When the PC restarts it will try to auto install new devices it detects, hit cancel. Go to Start>Control Panel > Add Hardware.

    4) When you run the new hardware wizard, select install from a list or specific location when prompted.

    5) At the next screen choose Don't search. I will choose the driver to install

    6) At the next screen choose Sound Video or Game Controller

    7) You will now be presented with a list of sound devices. Click the Have Disk button. When the next prompt comes up, click Browse.

    8) Direct it to the folder where you parked the Driver. Then to the W2K_XP folder within that folder. Click "Open" button. You might have to play around to find the correct folder within the driver folder.

    9) Select the Driver file within the folder. Now the New Hardware wizard should show a bunch of stuff to be installed. Click Next and let it finish installing. Restart and for me at least everything was back to normal.

    GOOD LUCK!!!!

By the way this was a Toshiba Laptop with Windows XP Home Edition.

When I save the Intel driver to the desktop and go to add it manually through the add hardware wizard, it asks for a filepath. When I go to the folder I put it in, it doesn't show up.

The "...we'll try something else..." thing is looking good. Is it possible that it could be a different chipset needing to be installed?
    Much appreciated....

ALCXWDM.SYS file not found...and then some

I'm starting a new thread - not sure if that's right, but I gots problems.

    HP Pav 743g Desktop.
    No Audio.
I've installed Intel and Realtek drivers in every order and in every different route I know of and some I didn't know of, and it still has no sound. Furthermore, every single time it reboots, the newfound hardware wiz comes up. I've been trying it, and now when it gets to a certain point it says, "the file 'ALCXWDM.SYS' on Realtek AC97 audio driver disk is needed
Type the path where the file is located, and then click
    OK.

I try to point it to the WDM_A406 file I downloaded to the desktop. It doesn't work, and I have to cancel.

    Help!!!!

I haven't been ignoring this, I've just been busy.... unfortunately you've tried just about everything I can think of, so I'm out of ideas.... sorry. As I stated earlier, I believe there are some underlying issues with your OS. You mentioned that the PC is crazy-slow, and the fact that you're having such issues installing the audio drivers, and "When I save the Intel driver to the desktop and go to add it manually through the add hardware wizard, it asks for a filepath. When I go to the folder I put it in, it doesn't show up" also tells me that something else else may be going on besides a driver problem.

    :(
