    Hi,

This is my sister's computer, so all I can tell you is that she was watching Big Bang Theory online from some random website and picked up some form of malware. Long story short, she gets a pop up stating the comp is infected, click now to scan and remove. It looks like she clicked. So, the computer started having trouble booting, as in would freeze on start up. I was able to boot in safe mode and run Antimalware once, which cleaned things up enough to boot into normal mode without freezing.

I deleted some unnecessary programs and then went by the Read Me First directions. I've run all 5 programs, and I'll attach those logs below. I'm also going to include the first antimalware run, just incase youd like to see that log as well. It picked up about 72 hits on the first run.

Please let me know if the logs show I'm clean, or if there's anything else I need to do. Thanks, you guys are the best!

It appears that the cleaning procedure took care of the worst of your problems, but we still have a little more to do.

    Uninstall the below software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 12
    Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.2.20
Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only) <-- should have been uninstalled in step 1 of the READ ME
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 1 of the READ ME

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZJfox000(2)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hey Chas,

Before I followed your directions, I was receiving a few pops of .rootkit infection according to AVG.

So far afterwards nothing noticeable yet, but i havent turned AVG back on either yet.

Btw, this is a Windows XP OS, my fault on not stating that earlier. And my apologies on not having those other programs deleted.

Here are the 2 files you requested and hopefully i did everything just like you asked :)

    Thanks.

Since my last post, AVG has shown a Trojan horse Rootkit-Agent.DZ detected.

We already know that and much much more from the logs.;)

It could just be things we have already quarantined or that are in System Restore. You should always provide the exact details of where something is being found. Names of the infection are not the useful unless you say what files and or registry keys are being reported.

Since your logs are clean, let's finish 100% of final steps and then see if AVG still reports anything.
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
Now see if AVG is still detecting problems, if so, you need to provide a log.

    Hey Chas,

Thanks again for your help. I have done as directed. I've reset the system restore as of this morning. I will let you know if anything pops up again.

I think you are right though and it was most likely contained in the old restore point. The location description seemed like it might be.

Should AVG find this rootkit agent again, by log, do you mean an AVG log or will you need me to re-run the other programs again to generate new logs?

    Thanks again for your help!
