I have an HP laptop with Win XP SP2. When I turn it on the lights come on but nothing ever comes on the screen and it just restarts. I ordered the reinstall CDs and tried to boot from those and there was no change. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, I have all the data I need. Actually I was going from memory it might not be SP2 now that I think about it. No recent OS updates. The screen flashed a little bit and the next time I went to turn it on it went into a reboot loop.

Instead of a clean install right of the bat, why not try and fix the issue? If you press F8 right after the power-on logo screen, you should get the Windows Boot Options. Arrow down and select "Disable Automatic Restart After System Failure". This should stop the 'loop' and should show the blue screen error. Post the error code (they look like "STOP:0x0000007F") and the message if one is provided (they look like "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME") and if a file is listed (a common one is "win32k.sys" for example) post it also. You could also try a repair install (follow the steps in this link) to attempt a full XP repair without needing to reload any software or programs, and all your data should remain intact as you remember it!
    :-D

Nothing at all ??? Otherwise, please describe what you see, and how long after you press the ON button before the process crashes, and the computer begins the re-start.

Model of HP and numbers behind would also help. Some HPs have problems and HP will fix it.

Yes, nothing at all come on the screen and the computer restarts after about 90 seconds. Could by screen have gone out?

Based on a previous experience with a desktop computer with the same exact same symptom: It was using a PCI-e graphics card.

That is an easy one to diagnose: The graphics card has failed completely. Replace the graphics card.

That's the best I can offer on that problem; not an ideal answer, I know, but it gives you a direction to pursue ....
