I've been having on going problems with reinstalling vista. About a year ago i moved off to college, but did not have the means to take my desktop with me. Six months ago i finally got my pc shipped to me via ups. Upon arrival every thing appeared to be physically sound. I still had not yet acquired a screen so it sat in a room for a couple more months. Perhaps three months ago i acquired HannsĀ·G HG-281DPB 27.5 inch lcd monitor. I plugged it in via hdmi, extremely excited to finally be back on a computer again. When windows (vista) started to load, to the best of my memory, said that it couldn't start due to a corrupt file. What i thought to be a minor hiccup has turned out to be a nightmare. I tried using my copy of vista to repair the os but it finds nothing to repair. So i canned that idea and decided to do a clean install. Vista always restarts gets to the last stage of the install and when it has about an inch and a half left to go on the progress bar the screen flickers and my computer turns off. When i reboots i get a message saying that the install was unsuccessful because my system shut down unexpectedly. After repeating the vista install process nearly twenty times installing to alternate hard drives, swapping out ram, unplugging internal card readers, trying different things i got discouraged and quit. A few weeks later i tried it again...same result. I called a friend and he happened to have a copy of xp (sp3). To my surprise it installed without a hiccup and has been running smoothly since. Recently i came across windows 7 Beta. I download a copy, mounted the iso, tried to install....and what do you know. EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS VISTA. Yesterday I tried to do a completely fresh install, so i formatted the Hard drive with a killdisk boot disc. No luck. Help please thank you.

Is this Vista (windows 7) 32bit or 64bit? Either way, try taking out 1 stick of ram. Try to install it this way.

    Hi FKNRKSTR,

You may want to try connecting the monitor to the pc using the vga port instead of hdmi and then try a fresh install. if all goes well, once in vista, load the monitor drivers from the CD and then switch to hdmi.

    @techsent:
I had that idea a few days ago since the screen flickered before it turned off i figured it was a display problem, i have it running vga right now. :/

Open the case and make sure all the cables (data and power) are firmly connected to all the drives. Make sure the power connector to the video card is connected correctly, and that the card is firmaly seated in the slot. If you have other PCI cards (modem, sound card, etc) remove them for now. Power on, go straight to the BIOS and use the 'Fail-Safe Default' settings; on my motherboard, I simply press F5 in the BIOS for the fail-safe defaults, then press F10 to save the settings and exit. Your motherboard is likely different but should have something similar. If none of this helps, and if the PC has on-board video, remove the video card and try installing using the on-board video. Another thought: hard drives can be very sensitive to shock (like if it's dropped) and maybe yours was damaged during the shipping process....

    XP works just fine.
    Vista and Win7 do not.

May I suggest that you run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor. It may find and pinpoint the problem.
(Yes, I know it used to run Vista OK, but now you have a new monitor attached .... and perhaps there are other changes as well?)

I would have been interested to see whether you still have the same problem using a different monitor (perhaps you could borrow one temporarilly to test it?), since that seems to be the only thing you have changed from the original set up.
    -------------
Now that is a REAL worry !!! What on earth is going on? That can't be right?

Remember, that during this test you are not testing just the memory stick (one at a time), but you are also testing the mobo slot that you are putting the RAM stick into! So for the purposes of testing each stick, you should be using the exact same mobo slot. When you find a flawless stick, then you should test that stick in each of the mobo slots to ensure all slots are working 100%.
    -----------
***Ensure that you have removed the graphics card from the box entirely: Don't leave it sitting in the mobo. Please ensure that everything else that can possibly be removed is also disconnected for the purposes of troubleshooting, especially all USB devices. Try not to use USB connections for the mouse and keyboard if possible.

Let us know how these ideas pan out, please.

I am of course, assuming that you still have XP installed on a separate partition from that to which you are attempting to install Vista/Win7.

Figured it out, in the middle of vista and 7s installation, windows refreshes the screen to my native resolution 1080p....for some reason the installation or my computer doesnt like that, and restarts.

Excellent work ... maybe that u-beaut monitor wasn't such a good idea ... ? At the very least, you could have done without all that hassle.

OR ... maybe the monitor has nothing to do with it ... ?

Can you try another ... standard type .... monitor?

Anyway, you seem to be focused in the right area now.
    Good luck.
