Hats for Kids w/Cancer

Hello, I started a thread called, "How do kids cope with this?"
here : http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=193674 Check it out...

It was a great thread, and started to take a direction that I felt we needed a new thread on Hats... Hats for Kids with Cancer... you know, it is really rough on them, and when they are going thru Chemo, they do lose their hair... I know of one in particular, who lost all her pretty long blonde hair, after her first Chemo treatment, and she was feeling pretty down. Thanks to some GREAT "SPIRIT-LIFTING GEEKS" here, :major she is getting some pretty darn cool hats to wear, ;) as she has to go thru this for a year.

Now, wouldn't it be nice to pop a hat in the mail to a child ? That would put such a smile on their face, and I can't think of a better place to post this!

If anyone is interested in sending out a hat, just PM me, and I'll send you the address where to send it... You know, there is a lot more than just one little girl in need of a hat... There are other kids as well, and I think if we all put forth an effort, we can put a smile on every one of their faces....

What do you think? To some, it is just a hat.. That simple hat can bring such happiness to a child! ;) And a smile so big, what do ya say?;)

Brilliantly stated TeeCee. I think that not only is this a great idea, but will be a testament to the kind of people here at Major Geeks. My hats are in the mail. I may even end up sending a second wave.

I once chopped off all my hair to donate to make wigs. Well, not *all* of it, I left a few inches behind, but you get the point.

I'm in. Weekend we are going into Scotland, and boy, do I have some ideas of headwear to send out. Only tasteful of course. Nothing gross or offensive. :cool

Great idea, Sue. And Paxton for kicking it off. Genius. Both of you.

TeeCee, I did cute my hair and was going to take it to "Locks of Love" http://www.locksoflove.org/ but if your friends granddaughter can find some one there to make a wig out of it I will mail it to you. Here's apic of my hair before and after and after.

    after

    and after

I have a personal hair dresser(LOL) my niece. Only problem is she lives 1 1/2 hrs away so we rarely go up there now.
Anyway PM and let me know. If they can't find some one I'll send a hat as well.
This is a marvelous thing you are doing I am so proud of you.

WOW! bigtrucks! That is some haircut! I'll see what I can do about the hair, I'll call her Grandma, and see what she has to say... You are so kind, such big :heart ! I'm getting hats ready to go as well. ;)

Yes, take off those hats, and mail them! :-D

I'm talking with a few people in the office here about hats, my family as well. I think I'll more than likely have another shipment to send out next week. I'd like to send 10 hats, that's my goal. I'd donate my hair to the locks of love people, but I doubt anyone wants to run around looking like Ellen Degeneres when they could have a long hair wig. LOL I think your hair has to be so long anyhow, and I don't have the patience to do it.

  10. TeeCee

    TeeCee MajorGeek

That is GREAT Pax, I am also getting some ready to go ;) We have to go into town today, and that will be my opportunity to pick up a box to put them in .. I'm going to use the Flat-Rate box, as I can stuff that one chuck full, and it ships for the same price....doesn't matter if it is one hat or 10! Very cool! This is so cool! ;)

    We Are Broken
    Paramore

    I am outside
And I've been waiting for the sun
    With my wide eyes
I've seen worlds that don't belong
My mouth is dry with words I cannot verbalize
Tell me why we live like this

    Keep me safe inside
    Your arms like towers
    Tower over me

    Yeah
    Cause we are broken
What must we do to restore
    Our innocence
And oh, the promise we adored
Give us life again cause we just wanna be whole

    Lock the doors
Cause I like to capture this voice
    it came to me tonight
So everyone will have a choice
    And under red lights
I'll show myself it wasn't forged
    We're at war
    We live like this

    Keep me safe inside
    Your arms like towers
    Tower over me

    Cause we are broken
What must we do to restore
    Our innocence
And oh, the promise we adored
Give us life again cause we just wanna be whole

    Tower over me
    Tower over me

And I'll take the truth at any cost

    Cause we are broken
What must we do to restore
    Our innocence
And oh, the promise we adored
Give us life again cause we just wanna be whole

Wasn't sure if this would be wrong but it just felt like a good thing to me and wanted to share.(Not trying to steal Taytems spot)
I wanted to listen to music while on MG's messing around,so I came across Chris Daughtry and played his music and liked it. So I started searching you tube and came across this one song that had a web sight about a little girl with cancer also. I,of, course went there and started reading and all I can say is Yes children are Gods most favorite and that's why they are so resilient. Go if you want or not, just if you go take the box of tissues.

That is beautiful, Pax, I wish I could watch the video too, but being on a DUN, that is not possible, so I am glad you posted the words.. THANK YOU!

@ bigtrucks, same to you, I sure do wish I could watch them.

I took my hubby into town today, for his Dr. appt., and I stopped at several businesses and told them of what we were doing with the hats, and you would NOT believe how this has snowballed! ;)I came home with 27 hats! I also put thier buisness cards inside each hat. All new, and a few extra tears to boot! :-D

I was not turned away from any, and some gave one, some two, some three and one even "5"! You could have knocked me over with a feather!
    http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-talk008.gif

I picked up the BIGGEST Flat Rate box at the P.O. and even teh postage for it, so this is going to be a challenge to get them ALL in the box.. We were both in tears coming home today! I expected a few, but this is just wonderful, and also, several businesses have asked for my number, as they are going to check with their venders for hats... Oh yeah, more are coming! One even gave me her e-mail, and said she would like to join in too... Isn't this something? I am still in shock, for sure!

These will be sent directly to the hospital... There are going to be some happy kids, for sure!;)

TeeCee that is awesome :hyper:clap:celebrate and you are right those children will be so thrilled it'll make us cry with joy:cry
It is so good to here there are still caring people out there that don't just care about themselves but others as well. Especially in these times. I just wish I could do a little more but my hands are kind of tided at the moment. Other then making long distant phone calls and/or sending positive messages, I still feel like I'm not doing enough. It helps though to know that there are those like yourself and Paxton and JOTS that can and do. You guys rock!:dood

Hi Bigtrucks! You just keep doing what you are doing! Post on her Care Page, she LOVES to read them, and her Mom says she just giggles! Now, if you can do that, you ARE doing something! You are making her smile;) That IS something! Don't cut yourself short, either.. There are going to be days that are really hard for her, and that Care Page helps her tremendously! Now, can you imagine if you didn't post in it? I shutter to think!rolleyes You keep it up, that does a body good you know! ;)

Yes, we were surprised ourselves, but we weren't asking for money, and I think that is what made the difference.... Just a hat... And when they found out what the hats were for, WELL, it just snowballed! Not just one hat, but "here, take two" or "Here, take these" and I may just have to get a second box, if I can't get them all in, but I must re-arrange them as it is now.. Thanks, Bigtrucks, You are helping that child, (even if you do copy from JOTS!) ;)

That's an awesome idea walking about town asking for hats from businesses. I think that's how I'll spend my lunch today. I work in a small town, so I can cover most of it in half an hour, and the people here are generally caring, so it should work out well.

I bet if I tell the Police Chief what we're doing he'll help out too, he's huge with Make-A-Wish around here, so I'm sure he'd be up for it. I sent out a few emails to some of my big suppliers yesterday and haven't heard back, but can't imagine that they'll tell me no. They better never bring anything here again if they do.

TC, I don't know what a DUN is, but you have to try and hear that song. Call and request it from a top 40 radio station if you have to. It's on a CD that you probably wouldn't really like, but the song is good.

Alright, going to check the care page now. I had 8 PM's this morning, I'll try and respond throughout the day. Today's the day for my hats, I better go track the package first!

Great idea TeeCee, about the businesses!! I haven't thought of that one. However, I will remedy that today. We have a 'ton' of car dealerships around here and I think that'll be a good place to start. Especially the Mercedes dealership!! If I don't get at least 10 hats from him, he'll NEVER see, or service, my Mercedes again!!;) I said 10, but I'll settle for 5!! Well, if you'll excuse me, I need to go gas-up my 'tank' and see what I can do. I'll let ya know how I make out.

Awesome idea Stubs.. In fact, if he doesn't give you 5 hats, I'd give the car away! (I'll even take it off your hands for you) LOL

Good luck, I'm hitting businesses soon too. :cool

That is fantastic guys! ;) Only watch what you wish for ! I picked up 27 hats yesterday, and they wouldn't fit in the biggest Flat Rate Box I got at the Post Office! LOL!

I got them all in one BIGGER box, but not that one!! I am shipping this afternoon too. You know, we both got that nice warm feeling inside doing this, and I am glad it wasn't on the outside. LOL

Hey Stubby, we don't have any Mercedes dealerships here, so I hope you get some from them ;)

Don't forget the motorcycle shops too... They are good too;) We have a Coke bottler here, but no Pepsi..

    Awesome, guys, :celebratejust awesome! :highfive

I just got a hat from the Chevrolet dealer in Reynoldsville, PA. We have a lot of dealers in DuBois, I'll hit them up as I have the chance. I'll have to email my cousin, she's an Air Force recruiter and can maybe get hats from all branches.

I just sent an email to a local radio station asking them if they'd help people get in contact with me if they would like to donate a hat or two. I explained that companies donating more than one of a hat, would have their hats given to other kids at the hospital, but the first would go to Taytem. I hope they decide to say something, but I asked that they only give my name to people who call and ask how to donate. :)

Today I received the first hat from work. Am expecting many more over the next few days. Going into town tomorrow. Will start my spree. Sending on Saturday.....Then it's off to visit local businesses.
I asked if my firm had hats and they told me no!! Can you believe that? We must be the only firm on Earth that doesn't have a company hat. They offered to give me some cups, though LOL

I took my package to the P.O.today, and will be tracking it too. This is just great... Also, the Post Office is going to collect hats for me there.. Seems like everybody wants to help!:clap

Yup, I'll have a second wave going out too!

What a day!! I didn't do as good as you TeeCee, but I netted 24 from 3 dealers, Mercedes, Jaguar, and VW!! None of them have the dealers names on them, but rather the cars logo. I got 11 from Mercedes, 3 of which are pink with white logo, and 6 of those are kid size hats and 2 being adult hats. He gladly gave me the hats, however there was one stipulation; I had to give my present car to some guy from Pennsylvania and buy a new S550 from him roflmao. I told him I would IF he could get the cost below $100,000! We both laughed and I left....with the hats!;) Jaguar gave me 6, all with the 'Cat' on them (all adult and various colors). I got 7 from VW, with 3 of them with a picture of a beetle and the rest with the logo. All white.

Tomorrow I'll see what the Ferrari dealer will do and then it's on to Nissan, Toyota, Lexus and Infiniti. See Ya Later!!!

What you do, is take that $100K+ Mercedes for a "Test Drive" over to the Ferrari dealer, and if they don't give you the Ferrari hats, give them the line Nicholas Cage used in Gone in 60 seconds: "There's too many self-Indulgent wieners in this city with too much bloody money!" and leave. LOL

I'll know in about an hour if my email makes it to the radio, if it does it will make it to businesses in at least a 50 mile radius. :cool

Seriously though, good luck with Ferrari, I'd take a hat from them myself! I tried to get a rear view mirror from Ferrari Atlant for an F-40 and they laughed at me.

GEEZZ everyone has done so well http://www.cool-smileys.com/images/265.gif. That's so good. I on the other hand made a type of flyer Tayte-Flyer 001.jpg (I hope they don't mind) and went to four dealerships Drive Time(my dealer)KIA-Palm Chevrolet,Nissan and Acura two stores Walmart and Publix(amajor grocery here) with my grand daughter and we received," 5-phone no#'s to call back to "so and so" as they are in charge of donations and have gone home early, 3 from dealers and 2 from stores.(Nissan was the only one who kept the flier:clap). The best but worse was the place I'm making my van payments. The cashier gave me $10.00 and said go buy some hats for her and send them in her name:hyper, the manager said no to putting the flier up (the putts:mad). I haven't lost hope yet.:strong I still have tomorrow and will post at the local hardware store out here in the forest where I live, which has a mini post office in it as well. Then I'm hitting Ford. I'm also thinking of maybe emailing the corporate offices and see if they have a heart somewhere in their pockets:-D.
My 5 year old grand daughter is looking forward to doing this again.I think it is partly because she got two strawberry licorice and a lolly pop and not by me.;)
I just checked on Tayte and mom said she was still feeling bad. my heart goes out to them to have to Indore something like this.Great pics.Especially of the four Angels from Heaven;)
Well wish me luck with calls and the PO tomorrow.

    Hey TC
The hair and $10.00 is on it's way to your place. Will be there monday. Went to my bank and had the manager post the flier on their personal bulletin board. Then I have a good friend that has a hot dog stand on the city of Ocala's Square. Her name is Judy but she is well known as "The Hot Dog Lady" Very popular and famous with local paper. She also knows and serves the legal as well as the business big shots.(who'da thought they would buy from a hot dog stand) Any way,I have to re-do her flier as a lot of the legal suits don't have a lot of time to read the small print. Other wise she is putting the flier I gave on her cart monday when she sets up. She has her spot (10-11yrs) across from some of the top notch lawyers in town. We'll see how it goes next week. Keep me posted on the hair.

This is a good thing. :) We have done similar here at MG before, like helping out the Lemon family, among others. It never ceases to amaze me how MG'ers step up to the plate. Y'all are a great bunch of kind hearted folks.:cool

As for the hats, this is something I've been involved with for years through various knit & crochet groups. We do hats for chemo patients (kids & adults) along with comfort shawls for mothers who are standing vigil over their critically ill child, lap-ghans for those in wheelchairs, hats for NICU preemies and afghans for those in nursing homes. It's such a wonderful feeling to make something that in turn offers comfort, love and support.

Keep up the GREAT work TeeCee and all you geeks who are helping out! You make me proud. *sniff, sniff*:major

Thank you AbbySue, it sure does give one a great feeling inside, that is a fact, and the other is, we sure do have a GREAT bunch of Geeks here... Everyone has been so kind, it is almost overwhelming... :cool I am happy to hear you have been doing this for some time. GREAT!

I am going into town today, to ship out one box of hats, and pick up some more and hopefully fill my next box.. Yes, we will keep it up, and I have no plans in stopping... ;) There are just too many that need a little extra boost, especially children, as they have to endure so much more than they should...

Sorry TeeCee that I haven't gotten back to you sooner, but I've gotten a bit of bad news. It appears that I have acquired something called 'Mycobacterium Avium.' It's a bacteria that grows in your lungs and it's acquired from the soil and the air. The Doc told it is VERY prevalent in the Southern states but not so much up North. No, it's not fatal and then again there is no cure either. However, it comes in 3 strains and one of those is 'Mycobacterium Tuberculosis.' Thank God I missed that one!!;) So between my COPD and MA (NO, not Major Attitude!:-D) I've been running a little slow lately.

Okay, as for the Ferrari dealer...it was closed down about 6 months ago, which I was unaware of. They built a homeless shelter right across from 'Ferrari South' so Ferrari packed up and left! Not a good place for a Ferrari dealer!! As for the Chrysler dealer....what a bunch of 'num-nuts!!' When the guy found out I had no intentions of buying a car, his attitude got rather rude. I explained to him what I was doing and he quickly informed me that his dealership was NOT a charitable institution. For not being a charitable institution they sure did take a lot of bailout money from us! I wanted to remind him of that, but I just walked out! After that I went to the Doc's office and the rest is history;)

As for the hats, I still have all 24 of them and haven't gotten around to boxing them up, or anything. The Mercedes hats are real nice. Some are black with a white logo and some are white with a black logo. Three of them are pink with a white logo!! I'll get them off as soon as I get myself re-aligned!! Again, I do apologize for not posting sooner and then the events of today well.....'when it rains, it pours!'
