When I first boot my Comp at a cold startup it makes a loud noise. After running it for a minute or 2, I can shout it down and reboot and the noise goes away. I want to know is this a fan going bad or what?? Thanks for your help in advance. ODIE

Yes, the bearings are going on the fan, replace it. Or old grease/dirt/dust. You could put a drop of light sewing machine oil on there but I'd replace it. I had that issue with a North bridge fan or if it's your CPU fan then be careful and replace ASAP, if a case fan then you got a bit of time.

Thanks for your post, augiedoggie. I clean the comp this morn. I the noise is still there. Applied wd40 to the case fan bearings. I think it is the case fan that is going bad. I need to replace it. Fan dems is 3.5" X 3". What is that in MM?? After running for 2hrs the noise comes back and I have to reboot again. Any suggestions??

    Hi

Definatly if the noise is loud to start with and slows and quietens after a while then its on its way out had only chipset ones doing this in the past over CPU HSFs so do open up the side and check roughly what fan is going.

Well, to make sure which fan it is use an empty paper towel tube as a stethescope, you'll find it quickly. Fans are always square in my experience as that's the smallest area that can contain a circle which is the fan itself.

3" fan is 80mm which is small for a case fan IMO, if you have extra holes in your case that go beyond 3" then I'd get a bigger fan, like a 120mm which equals 4.8". Just remember, 1" = 2.5 cm = 25 mm.

Guys: Thanks for your posts. I am also hearing a very faint sound of chripping. Could this be the HD going bad on me?? Wins does a CHKDSK at startup after I do a shutdown w/ power button. Needs to check sectors for bad disks. Could this roar be the HD?? I'l try and to do the listen as augiedoggie suggested.

Update to my Noisy Fan. Windows died on my 2 wks ago. Could not revive it. Wins Setup said that it could not find Hard Disk Drive Installed. Installed Kubuntu inplace of Wins and it is working fine now except I still have this issue w/ the Heatsink fan noise. Question: Can I replace the fan on Heatsink without replacing the Heatsink?? It is a Foxcomm case and fan. About a 80mm fan.
