I cannot decide so I need your help!!!

I am not sure if this post is appropriate but somehow I need Microsoft to realize how bad their browsers have been.

Hey be0, I have used IE for years. All my Pcs and LT's are currently on IE8.
To be honest I've never had an issue with either IE7 or IE8 (or earlier versions) I for one can't fault IE. Yes IE has received a lot of bad press. Sure no smoke without fire . But IE never compromised my Sys.

Yes, FireFox is my default browser for quite a while now. Simply as it's less attacked by crackers.
At the same time I have no problems in invoking IE. So I'll vote IE is good!! My thoughts... Look forward to seeing other members backed up opinions.

Edit to add:- I'm gonna get it in the hiney now..

    Cheers..

I would have to agree with sikvik's comments! Only had an issue with IE 8 on one computer and had to revert to IE 7 because of it. :)

    Hi

I have no issues with any browser, all work ok for me, its a matter of personal choice as to GUI, the security aspect that Firefox had for many years is now due to pushing it in tech circles and its popularity is making it a target for malware writers so its now as seen in last few weeks a target!

IE8 works great for me, but using x64 version of IE8 at present, however Mozilla's Minefield pre-alpha project is superb as is Opera 10 beta, Google Chrome I tried but didnt personal like.

However your poll is useless as its predominently aimed at making IE to be bad, the fact that if we are talking about security over GUI then in the security aspect of this question the issue is with the user behind keyboard.

Hi thanks for your input. I am sorry but let me clear something up. I am not only making IE look bad. I have been using IE for years now and prefer it over other browsers. I used Firefox before but stopped because its performance decreased however, they have added some awesome web development/programing tools. I have been using Chrome because of its unmatched performance speed.

Now my frustration with IE is that every morning on my Dell machine at work it Crashes. I think this might be due to the fact that I am running it on a 32 bit machine. On another note, business developed websites that we have here strictly run IE and no other browser. For me it crashes/freezes and has hick ups on an hourly basis. In an 8 hour day frustration with IE gets to you.

I only use IE8 to download updates from microsoft my default browser is now opera 10.00 beta 2 at the moment and I never had any problems or issues with it so far. It also has a integrated page load up turbo.

    HI

Dont think 32bit would be your cause, it should run its 32bit version OK, sadly 64bit broswers have major issues and main one is Adobe dont have a 64bit Flash Player available for Windows platform, thry have a beta linux one.

If IE is crashing alot then suspect for now a 3rd party add-on so disable any non-Microsoft ones to test, or run the No-Addons version of IE, its in Accessories > System Tools folder on start menu.

I removed IE8 from my system (when I used IE) as it would not allow me to view some websites :confused (even with compatibility mode), then I download firefox and tested it and the sites worked :confused

I never had that issue with IE7

    +1 IE8 is worse!

Another vote for IE8 is worse. But, I admit I'm basing that on one attempt to use it. I installed it on my Win XP system and found to be very sluggish. I soon removed it.

I have not installed it on my Vista laptop yet. On both computers, my default browser is Firefox. I also have Chrome installed on the laptop.

IMO, that's a very short-sighted strategy. I believe developing websites that display properly in other browsers is not tremendously difficult. I've studied some web design (HTML, CSS, javascript) and that's the basis for my opinion.

Think about ActiveX and tell me you really want to hand control over to whoever outsmarts Microsoft.
Firefox and Noscript for me. If you develop for IE only or demand scripting - you lose my business. So far this has worked well and keeps me supporting companies that value my privacy.

Sadly I did not develop our intranet. This was something done by a bigger company, I do not wish to state company names here.. I only customized it the websites and opened it to our reps.

I am really glad that the new asp.net AJAX technology is across all browsers. I plan on re creating all of the websites in ASP.NET 3.0 and making it work accross all browsers.

    Hello.
I have used firefox for the longest time because I haven't heard great things about IE. After IE 8 came out I heard some pretty good things! One of the good things I've heard about IE is that is very secure. I downloaded it on both of my computers, which are average, and IE 8 seems to run very well on both of them. Sometimes I think it loads pages faster than firefox. However, I like firefox a little bit better because of its interface and awesome add-ons.
This is just my opinion and what I have observed personally& online. Hope this helps you out a little bit. =]

I eliminated all of the add ons for Internet explorer like suggested by someone before. I no longer have issues with IE8 crashing or slowing down it is actually working very good.

    Thanks for the help.

I won't put a vote in because I haven't had chance to get my hands on IE8 so it wouldn't be a fair vote. I'll toss in some comments though...

With IE7 and IE8, Microsoft improved security a lot and I see that as a big step forward. However, I'm someone else who uses Firefox with NoScript but I also include WOT and AdBlock Plus and put the above combination on computers of any friends who ask for help. The combination gives you a very good chance of staying out of danger. AdBlock Plus is to keep them from seeing any of the ads that slip through which are spoof sites, which WOT does warn them about but AdBlock is another layer of defence against their own slip-ups or lack of knowledge.

    My main complaint against IE:
Problems with some websites not working is that Microsoft (so far as I've heard from comments of people using IE8) is still not following the standards for web browser programming and web site code as set down by The World Wide Web Consortium. This leads to websites that can't behave in a standard manner unless you really know your way around every trick in web coding. Some sites won't work if you don't use IE and some don't work properly if you do. I was on one the other day which had a text box where the writing area started way off to the left of the text box boundary - typing the alphabet in lower case took until the letter v before I could see any text. I promptly took the mouse to the NoScript bar to allow the site to run what it needed, only to realise I was in Internet Explorer 6 with nothing blocked. Firefox 2.0.0.20 shows it properly.

Also, I'm trying to put together a website and make it compatible with all browsers and IE is giving me a complete headache. Other browsers can run the site properly and put the sections where I tell them but IE doesn't "understand" the code needed to put them where I say and finding a working solution is proving difficult.

So for my money, until Microsoft changes their attitude of "we're the only ones in the world whose opinion matters" IE has a long way to go and Firefox with the IE Tab plugin is a much better and flexible option.

I volunteer in the comuter lab of our senior center and have seen a number of people bringing in computers that were having problems with the Internet due to IE8. The simple solution of course is to uninstall it and it reverts back to IE7.

Out of curiosity, I put IE8 on one of my machines but when I installed it I said no to all the add-ons and accelerators, whatever that means. With this lean installation, it works just fine, so I suspect the issues deal with these extras.

Wouldn't you think M$ would thoroughly test these things before the release?

They do and I was part of the test team on this and have no issue with it on multiple PCs, the main issues are not having up to date 3rd party applications, Flash, Java, Toolbars, Antivirus etc as you mentioned in Add-ons!

Add-ons are nothing to do with Microsoft, sadly many 3rd parties dont update, happens with add-ons for Firefox too.

Let me get in on this debate. I've always used IE and no other browser. I hear all these beefs with IE yet I quite often see complaints or read about issues with other browsers as well. Some users have special needs for using more than one browser but overall I say, pick one you prefer most and cut back on the belly-aching about IE in the forums. :p
