Avira says it can't fix this virus, so here I am.

I've read some of the other threads on this and they say to run fixmbr from the recovery console. When I run this I get a message that says:

"This computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record." And it says that running fixmbr can damage the partition tables if I proceed. So, I haven't run fixmbr yet.

Please let me know what steps should be taken.

    Thanks.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

It is the only way to fix it. The other fix is to wipe the system, delete partitions, and do a total reinstall.

So backup important data, and try running fixmbr from the Recovery Console and see what happens. In many cases, this works just fine.

I ran fixmbr and it appears to have been successful. Avira shows no trace of the virus. How can I be sure I'm clean? Are there any other scans I should run?
