    Hi,

I wanted to clean up my PC of malware and hence have followed the instructions on this site.

From the READ & RUN ME FIRST malware removal guide, I have finished upto step 4 and am onto step 5 for XP.
In the XP cleaning procedure, in the Using Malwarebytes Anti-malware step, while I was just starting the QuickScan, there was an which started to run in the windows command prompt, with the program C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\WWWBOD-1.exe. In the windows task manager I am seeing a ntvdm.exe process hogging almost 97-99% of the CPU continuously. (From google I can see that this process is a 16-bit VM for allowing 16-bit DOS programs to run on a 32-bit machine). What is this program about??
At the same time the Malwarebytes Quickscan is ongoing very slowly. There is nothing specific on the network traffic, except a few packets sent to addresses like 213.239.218.173 which I looked to belong to 213-239-218-173.clients.your-server.de.

I have attached the SuperAntiSpyware log from the scan in the previous step. I will post the manwarebytes log as soon as I get it. Pls let me know if I need to do anything separately for the above issue.

    thanks,

    Hi,
Further to the previous update, I have got all the logs which are now attached.
The previous problem has not repeated again.

Pls let me know, based on the logs, if everything is fine.

    thanks,

You date and time are way offf. You are set to January 2004. You need to fix this immediately. It is messing up the ability of many scans to work effectively since they work based upon dates of when files are created. At this point, it may be impossible to properly read your logs since everything is off by more than 5 years and basically all of your files seem new in these scans. Looks like you just did a reinstall too.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background (User 'SYSTEM')
    O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background (User 'Default user')
    O18 - Protocol: HTLFP - {03B7A5D4-96B0-4316-95F8-072D326A58F1} - (no file)
    O18 - Protocol: vfsp - {E4CB5121-E242-11D4-8ED6-00010219EB22} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi,
Thanks for the guidance. Sorry I could not try this sooner, am doing it today as I have the time!
While doing the steps below, I am getting stuck at a point, pls see below.

Yes, the date was messed up. I recall having changed it earlier, but probably it got reset. Also, I haven't done an OS re-install recently.
So I did a reset of the date, and proceeded with your instructions below.

    Ok. Did all this.

    • Ok. I did the above. I did not run combofix, and dragged the CFscript.txt onto the icon on the desktop. I warned me that combofix is not updated to the latest version, and should I run it in restricted mode, I said yes. After this, it finished processing, and shows me the "Rebooting windows . . . Please wait" prompt. It is stuck at this point for > 20 minutes! Im not sure what I am supposed to do now. I have followed the above instructions, and have not clicked the mouse.

Im not sure if the I have clicked the mouse unknowingly, as it seems to be stalled! What should I do now? Thanks!

    Hi,

    Thanks for the detailed instructions.
(Pls Note: I posted a reply to this thread a minute back with the status, and and update saying that ComboFix was stalling (about 20-25 minutes) while it was trying to reboot Windows. Since then it has successfully rebooted the machine, but my previous post seems to have not appeared on this thread at all! Weird.)

    Pls see my reply below.

I changed the date, and proceeded with your instructions below. I haven't done a re-install recently though.

    Done. Thanks.

Okay. Did this. Gave me a scare when combofix was refusing to go ahead with the reboot for a long time. It finished it in time though.

    [/QUOTE]

Ok. Did everything above. One point to note, for combofix, I dragged the CFscript.txt onto the icon, but did not run combofix before this, so did not get a update prompt. But after dragging the file onto the icon, it warned me that this was an earlier version of combofix and hence will run in reduced functionality mode, do I want to proceed. I clicked yes. Do I need to update combofix and re-run? How?

I have attached the requested logs, let me know if anything needs to be done further.

My comp feels a lot cleaner now. Thank you very much for your help!

BTW, would there be a particular anti-virus you could recommend? Would Kaspersky be a good choice? Or should I ask this in another forum?

    Thanks again for helping out!

    Hi,
I replied to this thread yesterday, twice (once when there was an issue with Combofix and the other, after evertything was complete, alongwith both the logs). Unfortunately I am not seeing either of those posts here yet. As it is almost > 24 hours, I wanted to check if it is anything to do with moderation which is holding up the posts, or my posts have simply not appeared here?

Thanks in advance for confirming if any of the above issues may have happened. I will be able to post my logs once I hear from someone on the forum.

    thanks,

My instructions specifically covered this. They said the below
Thus you were supposed to update first; however it looks like everything worked okay this time (which is not always the case when it is out of date).

Kaspersky is a good AV but no AV is perfect and you can get just about as good protection from using free tools. In fact in many cases, the free tools are better than quite a few of the big name company tools. A bunch of free tools are given in the link below.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
